unexpected surprises...and clothes hoard much?

When we moved into our new home, we just randomly put clothes in our Master closet (his on his side/hers on her side) and just kinda left it, intending to organize it within a few weeks after the move.

FF to three months later.

Last night, the hubster and I started organizing the closet. We decided to swap sides, as one side of the closet has a high rack/shelf and a low rack/shelf and being that I am 4'10" and have a lot of folded clothes I could use the access to the lower rack and shelf.

I also put together a new shoes rack (it's about as tall as I am). We still have more organizing to do.

However, while going through stuff in the closet I cam across my bag. My bag of pants to be hemmed, since I am sooo short and while the Lord may have blessed me with my limited height, he didn't bless me with the talent to sew.

So I went through the bag, and found some surprises:
-- pants I no longer like and chose to put in the Goodwill bag
-- and the biggest surprise of all -- a pair of pants I bought with my first paycheck when I started working at B&N back in 2004. B&N has a dress code of business casual and when I was hired I had very little dress attrie.

HOLY COW! Those pants had been in that bag for six years.

So I went through the closet and totaled up all of the pants I have to have hemmed, and I have at least 15 pairs....+/- 2.

And my husband wonders why I always wear the same two pairs of jeans during the winter. And one pair of black dres pants to wear to special occassions.

So now, I have them all pulled out, and will slowly over time take them to be hemmed. This is going to be pricey.

I am going to try to figure out how to do some on my own as well...I watched some YouTube vids last night, but am unsure if I can do this and have the hem look decent.

I would look on craig's list for some one with a spare bit of time and talent.

I bought a sewing machine earlier this year to complete a project for the Give A Day. While my seams weren't exactly perfect, it wasn't that hard. You can buy the scrap yardage off a roll at JoAnns, for like 1/2 the cost. (any time there's less than 3/4 of a yard, the mark it down) Buy different materials, and try out all the settings on the machine.

Ask at a fabric store, JoAnne's maybe, for some instructions. The clerks there should be able to help & taking pair of pants with you will help them show you what you need to know.

They have fabric glue at the dollar store, I tried it on a pair of pants (not an expensive pair) and they came out ok,

Local dry cleaners may have a tailor or be able to recommend one.

I would just like to say that I am impressed that you can fit into pants you bought 5-6 years ago. If I found a pair from that far back, I'm fairly certain the length would not be the problem :rotfl2:

I have a gal that does alterations. She charges $8 to hem pants. It is certainly less expensive then what you spent on the pants to only sit in a bag in your closet.

Check with your local park and rec department and see if they have sewing classes-I know ours does. If not there, check with a local middle or high school and see if they have a home ec (Family and Consumer Science) department and maybe the teacher can recommend a student, or herself, that can hem them for you. I know my DD would do it in a heartbeat. You could offer $100 to do them all.
