Lampskies, yes, any(doesn't matter what speed) film in checked luggage will be destroyed by the more intense scanners they use for luggage being directly loaded onto the plane. Never put film exposed or not in checked luggage. You should be safe with film in a carryon, but, if you're real worried you can request hand checking at the carryon screening for any other film. 800 speed is good for about 3 or 4 scans before you're risking it. My personal recommendation is as long as you have time, get the film developed shipboard. They use a quality process and you'll know for sure the pictures came out.
400 with a flash is ok too
Just 400 with NO flash isn't going to do very well.
