Hey! all of you Aug 12th er's , are you starting to think about what to bring for the apartment. Does anyone have any ideas of all what we should bring? Or does anyone have any pictures of the bedroom size and closet, drawer space, or storage there. Anything will greatly be appreciated.....Let's get packing!!!

I helped my daughter move last month. Here are a few things to think about depending on your need/wants: if you have a tv a cable is needed, she and her roommate have a tv in their room as well so they needed a splicer, she took clothing, bedding (a foam pad or egg shell crate type of pad is really nice, the mattress has a plastic covering to it), pillow, she took a dust ruffle to hide the stuff she hid under her bed (she actually took two and her roomate borrowed the one she didn't use), pictures, computer with a router or cable, the dresser has 6 drawers in it so each girl took 3 drawers..definitely not enough for my daughter so we went to Walmart and got her a 3 drawer dresser for like $50, a small light for the bedroom is nice for there is only the ceiling light which does not offer much lighting at all, a fan was a must for her, she brought a toaster and her roommate a crock pot, hangers (they sold out at Walmart), lock for locker in closet, dress clothes for Traditions with proper shoes and nylons if wearing a dress/shirt, towels, we bought the girls a vaccum cleaner for you have to rent them from the club house, a white board to post schedules, all chargers (cell phone, ipod computer and camera), and last but not least $$. She lives in Chatham in a 2 bedroom. The living room furniture was new with tags still on. I think the previous people in the apt must have been "rough" on it for the door to the patio needed to be replaced (it did not close completely and was fixed immediately), the garbage disposal leaked and was replaced and there are stains on carpet (which she covered with huge rug from Ikea...only 10 miles away from the apt!) There is a Walmart very close by...it is also very busy when everyone moves in. She checked in at 8:00 am and we were at her apt. by 10:00...one roommate was there even before that. Any other questions feel free to ask. She loves it there! She works in Entertainment Costuming. She already is talking about extending and trying to get her sister to do the Spring Program.

Thanks for all of your info. My son and I are flying down on the 8th and my daughter and my husband are driving down so she will be able to have her car there, We are from Indiana and she is so excited. She is hoping to be in Chatem or Patterson with around 3 other roommates. I knew about the Walmart ther but not the IKEA. Thanks for the tip. Is it easier to rent a vacuum or to buy one there? Any other thing you can think of please let me know. I'm so nervous about her being there and she is excited to go. We are planning a visit there in October 20 - 25th and Dec. 25 to Jan 3 to pick her up so I guess time will go by fast. How does your daughter like it? Is this her first time away from home? Thanks for your input.......

:)We are from Michigan. My husband, her and I drove down and then we flew back so she could keep her care there. Having a car is a huge plus! The first two weeks she took the bus to work and she had to be at the bus stop at 6:15 to be to work at 8:00..so now that she knows her way around it takes her 10 minutes to drive there..15 if it's busy. She LOVES having a car. I will try to post some pictures of her room if I can figure it out..never done it before. We bought her a vacuum at walmart for around $60. She said to check one out you have to go to the clubhouse and they charge you $1. It isn't much but she kinda likes things neat and clean. I was really nervous about her being so far away from home...shed a few tears every now and then.. but she calls everyday at least a couple times and to hear all the fun and exciting things she is doing makes me very happy and at times jealous :) She LOVES it and is making tons of friends..not only with CP's but regular employees at the parks. This is her first time away but she seems to be adapting very well...everyone helps each other out. She has really nice roommates. She is flying home Aug 1-4, which she had no problem getting off work and we are making our first trip down there on August 26-Sept 1 We plan on going down for a long weekend again in Oct. She had no problem getting the week off with the exception of one day while we are down there visiting...I was surprised! Her flying home was kind of a surprise because her roommate is also from Michigan and asked her if she wanted to fly back with her...for only $140 a ticket we said "yes" in a heartbeat. Now I am just worried when we go down to visit in August, my other daughter is going to see what an experience it is and she will be enrolling in the Spring Program

hope this worked..

Is there enough room in a two bedroom for a medium sized Butterfly chair inside the actually bedroom? Or is it a tight fit in there?

You more than likely could fit the chair, guess it depends on what complex your in. We were able to go through a Vista Way apt and the bedrooms were smaller than Chatham. They are two different layouts as well. The girls had the 6 drawer dresser, 2 night stands with 2 small drawers in it if I remember right, the 3 drawer dresser (we bought) ,a standing fan, and floor light in their room and it looked comfortable. Oh, add in a over the door rack to hang your towels on as well. I just noticed that in the picture above.

are the beds comfortable? Do I need to get her a egg shell mattress pad or just a mattress pad cover?

The beds are not too comfortable according to my daughter. They have a plastic lining on them...really cheap and incomfortable looking. She bought a 3 inch memory foam pad (got it at Walmart on sale for about $40 I think) and she also has a mattress pad. She now said it is better. After a long day at work, which you will have many, a good mattress pad/foam pad/egg crate may be a good investment :)

thank you for all of your help. I've learned more from you than anything. I hope you don't mind me asking these questions. I'm just a little nervous that we are forgeting something. And I hope she has some great roommates. Again, Thanks alot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is there a medicine cabinet in the bathroom? It looked like there was one in one of the pictures, but I'm not sure...

:surfweb:

There is a medicine cabinet there. Also in the picture, on the left hand side where the door is, there is another door behind that which opens into a small closet that you can put things (towel, personal products, sheets, etc) in. I think there were 5 shelves in the closet...but plenty of room. My daughter put the stickers on the walls but yesterday took them down for room inspection. They passed!...but the other roommates did not pass  Guess their clothes were all over their bedroom, carpet messy and trash was not taken out. So I guess some in apartment can pass and others fail..didn't know that. Any questions feel free to ask...we are planning a trip in August and it seems like I am on here all the time trying to get reservations for dining...can't get restaurant I want to go to :sad2:

Dear Rbrainerd...when in Aug are you gong down? We are going there Aug. 8-16 and October 18-25 and Dec. 25-Jan 3 to pick her up and so she wouldn't have to drive back to Indiana by herself in the Winter time. Those Chicago winters can be brutal. In Aug. We are staying at the Wilderness Lodge and in Oct. we are staying at the Caribbean Beach and in Dec. we are staying at Pop Century. I also work for Disney at our local Disneystore in the Mall. I'm the Stock Manager and have been with the company for 12 years. Maybe that's why my daughter is such a Disney nut......... We try to go every year so going 3 times in 5 months will be trying.

We are going down August 26-Sept 2 and staying at Port Orleans Riverside, going down again Oct 22-27 and staying at Animal Kingdom Lodge, and then we going down Dec 25-Jan 2 and staying at my in-laws condo. This will be 5 times this year since we did spring break and then stayed there a week when we took her down there for the program. We're going to be Disney'ed out. To be honest, she has already told us she is thinking of extending in January..she absolutely loves the program. Her sister is going down there in August with me and I am afraid I will loose her to Disney as well since she was the one who wanted to do it before her sister

Here is a basic pack list - I hope this helps some. You can pick up lots of items at Wal Mart once you arrive. But yes, the beds are comfortable.

Congratulations on being selected for the Walt Disney World College Program! This is such a wonderful experience and you will make life-long friends. Below is a simple pack list.

Basics:

Clothing for hot and cool weather (only pack for cool-cold weather if you will be on your program from late November until late March).
Pack a variety of casual clothing, as well as a few dressy items. When you attend traditions class and go through initial training, you will be asked to dress professionally. This means a nice pair of slacks, blouses, polos, dress shoes, skirts, dresses, etc… no spaghetti straps or flip flops at these activities which state professional dress. Think job interview. For men, slacks and a dress shirt (Tie Optional) and dress shoes. Don’t forget to pack 1-2 swimsuits/trunks. You’ll also want at least 1 hat (or baseball cap) and comfy shoes for those fun free park days! (Get a pair of Disney Crocs! They are the best!) Bring 1 hoody or sweatshirt and 1-2 light sweaters as well.

Toiletries: Only pack travel-sized bottles of toiletries. You will have plenty of time to go grocery shopping (this is a great way to bond with your new roommates)! So only pack small bottles and buy full-sized stuff when you arrive. Do pack sun block though – a nice big bottle (SPF 30 or higher) and use it!

Medications: Be sure you have 1-2 refills of any medications you are taking with you. And have your current prescriptions transferred to the Lake Buena Vista Walgreens located outside the entrance to Vista Way. This works if you end up living at Chattam or any of the other new complexes.

Current Health Records & Vaccination Record: This is a good item to have, just in case. You can request this information from your family doctor. Disney provides a health clinic for College Program kids (CPs), which is located at EPCOT in the cast area. If anything happens, it will be helpful for you to have your health and vaccination info on you to take with you if you have to make a visit (due to injury, illness, etc…).

Pre-paid phone card or cell phone with an excellent nationwide plan: This is where a lot of CP kids get into trouble. At both apartment complexes, there are no phone bills. You can only call out of the complex’s phone if you use a phone card. Or you can use your cell phone, but make sure you understand your plan and billing! A friend of mine didn’t understand his plan and racked up over $1500 in cell phone charges! He has yet to clear his credit report of this debt.

Spending money: I recommend a minimum of $300. You will not receive your first paycheck until about the 2nd week you are there. So you will need some money to tide you over. And for goodness sakes, don’t blow it right away (common mistake). Use it for groceries, tennis shoes or flats (depending on your role, you’ll be asked to purchase either all white or all black tennis shoes for your costume, or dress flats if you are a hostess or waitress. Wal Mart is a great location to get these for cheap and the Disney CP busses take you there. This is a Super Wal Mart, so a good place to get groceries). Now this also leads into the debate over credit cards. As a college student, you should have one credit card (to slowly build up good credit for later in life). If you do not have one, check into a student card from Discover. They are the best in my opinion. The credit line will be low, like $300-$500 so as not to allow you to go crazy. Keep it only for emergencies, but buy the occasional small item like groceries, then pay it in full each time. Simply having the credit card doesn’t help your credit. You have to use and pay it off each time to build up great credit. I was wonderful with my credit cards until I went to Disney. You don’t make much as a CP (although you will make more than I did in 2001), and it is really tempting to spend your credit card money on dinner or a souvenir for your sister. Fight the urge! I told myself back then, “I’ll probably never be able come back. I should spend it now while I can!” It took me 2 full years to pay off my balance from Disney. And since then, I’ve visited a handful of times. So have a credit card, but only use it if you absolutely must and pay it off in full each time.

Camera: You will want to capture every memory you have at Disney World with your new friends! Bring along your digital or film camera and pack plenty of batteries and/or film! Walgreens is right outside the gates to Vista and you can get film developed anytime real easily.

Pictures from home: It’s easy to get a little home sick, even while at the Happiest Place on Earth! So pack a few photos of family or friends to look at when you feel a little blue.

A Diary/Journal: I started keeping one, but not until I was half way done with my program. And yes, while I have tons of great and fantabulous memories, I wish I had written down more to look over now. Be good about writing every day, or at least every other day about your experience.

IF YOU ARE DRIVING:

Bedding: Pack sheets and a comforter for a twin sized bed. Or purchase a set once you arrive. The bedding they provide is yucky and scratchy. Same goes for those flying – purchase a cheap set once you arrive.
Laptop Computer: Vista Way did just announce on March 5th, 2007 that they had their grand opening for a brand new internet computer lab! However, it is always nice to use your own and internet is available in all apartments. So if you can, bring it!
Anything else you can fit in your car!

My daughter started June 15. She just came home for a 4 day visit and took an umbrella and a rain coat back down with her. She says it has rained almost every day since she has been there. We live in MI and she said there is no comparison to the rain in Florida....it pours! When we were there to drop her off it did rain and it floods within minutes. She also took a good de-frizzer for her hair...she is not liking the humidity very much. Also in the previous post, they do not supply any bedding at all but a mattress so that may have changed. Good Luck to all of you going down soon!! We leave to visit her in 21 days and are soooo excited!
