Under 12 quarantine upon return to Canada

On the other...did they just let in a kid with Covid? Yes she had a negative test to get on the plane but still...we are on our 14th day of arrival back home (how did that happen?! Time is flying) and we have been very diligent about keeping her away from crowds and masking up (which she does anyway) when we are out. And yes she's fine, shown no symptoms of anything so it's all good. And yes, still hoping to go to Disneyland in November with my 13 yr old, my bff and her 13 yr old, still watching CA #s carefully but I'm fairly certain we are going

We came back on August 23…. I had timed our
trip home to be exactly 14 days before school starts just in case the quarantine and/or modified quarantine rules were still in place and I am glad I did. My daughter is 11 (the rest of us all vaccinated) and when we landed at Pearson she was subject to a test and was given a sheet saying a modified quarantine (ie no school or big groups for 14 days). We were given a kit for day 8 testing and logged on for a supervised swab. It comes with a pre paid Purolater bag that we had to leave on our doorstep and it was picked up the next day.

We also had the tests done at the airport (Toronto) and I can tell you it’s the RT-PCR but does not go deep at all. It was a very shallow swab for us.

It happened at the airport and I was a bit surprised as I fully expected the take home test. They were definitely calling it a PCR but based on my observation when they swabbed my daughter it was definitely not a nasal pharyngeal like we do at work… much more shallow. I was quite surprised actually.

We have an upcoming trip at the end of September and DH and I are both fully vaccinated so I was under the impression that with the new rules, our children would be able to do the 1 day test like us and then not have to quarantine when we got home. However, I was just on the Government of Canada website and reading the requirements for children under 12 who have traveled with vaccinated adults and it says that they can't do the following:

What your child cannot do for the next 14 days

• Attend a setting where they may have contact with vulnerable people (e.g., long-term care facility), including with people who are immune compromised, regardless of that person’s vaccination status or public health measures in place.
• Attend school, camp or day care.
• Travel on crowded public transportation that does not ensure physical distancing and masking (e.g., crowded subway).
• Attend large crowded settings, indoors or outdoors, such as an amusement park or sporting event.

"

I thought that this was the case but that it had changed. So now, I'm super choked, because I don't think I can have my older boys missing 3 weeks of school.... ERG.

Anyone else have to navigate this who is traveling during the school year with children under the age of 12?

We're in the GTA (Durham School Board) and I haven't see any requirements for staying away from school after travel for kids 12+ that have had their vaccine. DD is fully vaccinated, and we have a trip planned for early December, but may cancel depending on how things look in a month or so, but definitely will cancel if a mandatory quarantine is put in place. She is in Elementary school so the majority of kids are under 12 and unvaccinated there.

Have any of you seen/heard any mention of restrictions against vaccinated kids returning to school after international travel? I wonder because so many Covid screening questionaires (including my own for work, but not an issue for me per se as I am able to work from home) ask if "you've been out of Canada within the last 14 days". I would have thought that vaccinated or not, schools wouldn't want kids coming back right away after travelling.

We plan to travel in December as well, and technically, if nothing changes, we could come back on a Saturday and DS12 could go to school on a Monday, as he’d be exempt from quarantine and would pass current screening.
However… if the covid situation doesn’t improve, we’ll probably travel just before Christmas school break starts, so DS wouldn’t have to go back to school right away. Just in case.

Thanks for your reply! That makes sense the way the school screening worded their questionaire.

Definitely gives us something to think about..moving the trip to right before Christmas break. If not, we would probably reschedule to right before March break.

I think it more than likely assumes that your vaccinated 12 year old is going back to school to be with other vaccinated children.Could be a situation that wasn't thought of, where they're returning to unvaccinated children

So what you are saying is that you select “no” here ? As long as the vaccinated youth has tested negative they don’t quarantine when returning correct ? Sorry .. just trying to get all this clear for if we go ahead with our January trip.

I was also told by someone at our local health unit, that even the screening doesn’t mention the second part (so if it just says: Have you travelled outside Canada in the last 14 days” - you say NO - if you are exempt from quarantine. Some places don’t have the updated wording.
The new wording asks if you’ve been told to quarantine because technically you could be fully vaccinated and for some reason the border officer could still say you have to quarantine. For example, you tested positive on arrival. Or you didn’t upload your documents etc.

I hope so! Things keep moving forward with loosening of the restrictions, Canada is now open to fully vaccinated international arrivals despite 4th wave. I don’t agree or disagree but just seems they are focusing on allowing for easier travel for those vaccinated. I just hope they will drop some of the testing coming back.
I have to say it’s fairly smooth sailing traveling right now if you are fully vaccinated but still not without hurdles. I am glad we went away in August and we want to go again, but it will really depend what rules are in place 3 months from now.

So frusturating . DD at Christmas would be allowed to return to high school but DS can not return to campus at this point even being fully vaxxed. So we moved our trip /shortening it so he can move in to residence before school starts in January

Sheridan College rules as of now.. Must stay off campus for 14 days. Wonder maybe bc international students ? And congregate living? No idea . Everything changes daily , I can’t keep up
