My family and I went to disney this year and we did the DVC tour. Our guides explained the benefits of becoming a member. He said right now they are selling AKV. My wife and I feel that we would love to make this resort our home resort, but we are undecided whether we want to take the plunge or if it worth purchasing. Please Help.

This is really a personal decision for you based upon your travel habits. For starters:

1. Do you go to Disney every year or at the very least once every three years? By banking and borrowing points, you can combine a maximum of three years worth of points for one vacation.

2. Do you usually stay in a moderate or deluxe on-site Disney resort? If so, then DVC may be a good choice for you. This is based on what you would spend renting a room versus the annual cost of DVC ownership.

3. How many people will be traveling with you and what type of room would you most likely be needing? If you want more than the normal motel room, then DVC may be a good choice.

Guides usually do not spend a lot of time discussing your annual maint. fees but over the term of your contract, you will spend much more money on these than on your initial purchase. They also speak of your ability to exchange your points for stays at other resorts world wide. While this is true and offers some variety, you will get a better value for your points by using them mostly at DVC resorts.

That said, DVC has been a great buy for us. We want to stay on-site and with a family of six, we would have needed two motel rooms. DVC offered a better situation and the added benefits of much bigger rooms, a kitchen and an in-room washer/dryer. Our vacations are now actually longer and much more relaxing. We do not feel rushed to do and see everything anymore.

Maybe you can add some more information about your vacation habits or desires, the size of room you will most likely need and maybe the length of stay you are hoping to have. Members of this board can then answer and offer advice. There is much to learn so please feel free to ask.

My family and I goes to florida every year, but we don't always stay on disney's property. This year we stayed at Port Orlean French Quarter and we really enjoyed our time there. We loved the disney transportation to the different theme parks. I know if we decide to become a DVC Member we probably would really enjoy all the benefits and the flexibility that disney has to offer.
