If you bank your points, then change your mind and want to book a trip within that year, can you unbank them? On the reverse side, if you reserve a room 11 months in advance and later want to cancel it, is there a penalty? This might happen if we reserve for a really busy week (Christmas or Feb vacation), then can't get reasonably priced airfare, we might not want to go.

Banking points is irreverisible. Once you bank them, you can't pull them back.

Cancelling a reservation 31 or more days prior to check-in: All Vacation Points used to make the reservation will be restored to your account in the Use Year in which the reservation falls.

Cancelling a reservation 30 days-1 day prior to check-in: All the Vacation Points used to make the reservation will be placed in the Holding Account in the Use Year in which the reservation falls.

As DVC Mike said, provided you cancel at least 31 days in advance, the points are returned to your account. If you are still within your banking window, you could bank the points into the next Use Year. If you are past your banking deadline, you would have to use the points prior to the end of your Use Year.

If your points go into "holding" (due to cancelling 30 days to 1 day prior to check in), the points cannot be banked. They must be used before the end of your Use Year and they can only be used to book a stay within 60 days of check in.

However, if you bank and then want to book, you can borrow points from the following year.

And like banking points, once you borrow points you cannot reverse the transaction.
