Since you guys know everything!!

My husband and son just passed the test and are going to umpire this baseball season. Does anyone know how to get a deal on an umpire uniform and all the gear that they need?

Thank you.

Thanks for your repsonses.

Yes, they do need to buy their own equipment. Too bad, I know.

My son is going to umpire the 13 year olds. My husband is going to umpire the 14 -16 year old senior minors. Senior majors - conflict of interest.

Way back when I umpired, the best place to get "starter" equipment was from other umps who were looking to get rid of their older stuff and move up. Check with the assigning secretary for the umpire's association and see if they can get any leads.

"ump-attire.com has good deals, as well as theofficialschoice.com. You can skimp on shin guards, hard plastic is hard plastic, and you can usually find a good pair on clearance somewhere. DO NOT FORGET plate shoes. If you just need protection, not style, go with steel-toed shoes from wal-mart, but New Balance has great hard-top shoes. The last thing you want is a broken toe on a foul tip. A lot of sites sell bundles - starter kit style for around $200. With 13-year-olds and senior minors, you don't need to get a $170 West Vest. The Champion p200 is a great hard shell and covers 17 inches as opposed to the 13 or 15 most give you, and it's almost always on sale."

-As told to Plannin'Shannon from Umpire Lydon. However, please don't ask her to translate. ;)

Thank you very much for all of your detailed replies. I forwarded them to my husband.

My son spent around $200 on a complete umpire uniform (pants, shirt, chest protector, knee pads and face protector). He hasn't umpired in years and I'm looking to sell it. It's boxed up in the attic now. I'm going to pull it down and get the sizes. It's probably a size 32-34 waist. He only used it one season. There is probably a plate brush and clicker to go with it.
