I'm so upset about this and I'm not even a Tigers fan. That guy deserved the Perfect Game!! UGH!!!!!!!!!!!!

The umpire's blind!!!!

I've always wanted to shout that. Seriously though, the was a lousy call. Anyone could see that the runner was clearly out. The pitcher seemed to take it in stride...he knows he thew a no hitter.

Yea, I was pretty ticked too and I don't follow the Tigers at all. If this doesn't make a case for some kind of limited replay system in the game, I don't know what does. Selig has always maintained it would hurt the "history" of the game, but this ump's bad call prevented history from being made with 3 no-no's in a month!

The uproar will be pretty strong on this one, IMO.

Good to know from a non-Tigers fan. DH and I grew up outside Detroit and are huge Tiger fans, good to know others agree. The poor guy, he was so close...he got it but didn't. My DH's Facebook ppage was nothing but that last night since most of his friends are from back home and those that aren't know he's a huge fan.

He will be talked about for some time, but not at all the same.

I was at the game the last night sitting on the first base side. The call was clearly blown and the highlights just reinforced it. I feel terrible for Galarraga - he pitched a great game and his teammates really tried their best to keep it perfect for him (Austin Jackson's catch anyone? Amazing!). My DH said that Jim Joyce was interviewed after the fact and admitted he made the wrong call but it is a little late for Galarraga.

I can't believe I almost witnessed a perfect game. Actually, I guess I did witness a perfect game live, just not perfect on paper :guilty: I felt nervous for Galarraga come the 7th. Everyone was standing in the 9th. For a big baseball family, it was an incredible thing to witness.

Jim Jones actually apologized to Galarrage in person, and gave a radion interview where he went on a bit of colorful tirade about how he messed up the call. I just don't understand WHY, with a historical game on the line, and with a call that was close, would the ref not err on the side of Galaragga anyway and call it an out? Everyone in the stadium could see it was an out. THe ump was 5 feet away!

Just beyond boneheaded.

They asked on the news this morning if the baseball commissioner could over rule, and they said he could, but probably won't. I don't understand why he wouldn't. :confused3

They definitely need instant replay for things like that.

This should definetly be overruled!!!
I've been a baseball fan since the early 70's and this has me so pissed!!
They let the steriod jocks get away way too long and they can't make this one good decision to give some good feeling back to baseball.

I'm glad I starting watching college lacrosse and baseball because MLB has been leaving me with a sour taste the last 10 years.

The ump is only human, and he has agreed he messed up. I still feel bad for the pitcher though. It would be the right thing if Bud would step up and overrule the call, if that's possible.

I think overruling this would set a bad precedent. I'm sure in the vast history of baseball bad calls have resulted in the winning run crossing the plate, and they didn't overturn the "win" or "loss" in those situations. This call didn't affect the ultimate outcome of the game, only the stats in the book.

It stinks for the pitcher, and I'm glad the umpire had the guts to come out and say he blew the call, but I think the best thing to do is for the league HQ to just let it go.

He won't overrule it because it will open doors for so many other incidents. This was the last play of the game but there are so many other missed calls in the middle of games. What about strikes that were called balls? If the commissioner overrules this it will wreak havoc on the league.

Then you will have requests to overturn calls everywhere and how could you determine the outcome of the game if a call was missed at 3rd base in the 4th inning. You have no idea what the outcome of that game would have been.

Ump admitted he messed up, apologized to the pitcher and the pitcher gave him a hug. Seems like everything is ok to me.

Galaragga really impressed me with the way he handled the whole thing. He accomplished something that some of the best pitchers ever to play the game never achieved, saw it taken away on that one bad call, and never lost his cool. And on the other side of the coin, Cabrera impressed me too. I've never been much of a fan of his, he's always come off a little self-involved and more concerned with himself than the team, but he really showed himself to be a team player last night with the way he was willing to argue where Galaragga didn't and in the way he kept talking smack to the ump through the last batter of the game.

Even though I am a huge Cleveland Indians fan (that is who they were playing) I am outraged by this. It is clear to anyone who watched the playback that he had caught the ball. He deserved to have that perfect game.

I feel bad for everyone involved. Jim Joyce seems like a stand up guy who made a VERY human mistake. I've heard his interview. No one is taking this harder than he is.

He could have ranted and raved that he made a good call...he didn't. He fully admitted he was wrong. He made a mistake, he thought the guy was safe. After watching the replay, he sees he blew it. To admit that, publicly, takes guts.

Galarraga is also a class act. Big time. He took it all in stride. He could have charged the guy and everyone would have understood. Instead, he forgave.

This is even big on the Sports Radio station in San Francisco. When DH got home from work yesterday, he said that a Tigers pitcher was an inning away from a perfect game, so we started watching then. We could not believe that the umpire blew the call. So sad for the pitcher. Small consolation that he knows that it really was a perfect game.

I think that replays should be allowed in cases like this.

I agree with all of this, but I also believe that because even the ump is admitting the mistake, this of all times is when the commissioner should step in. I am sure the ump would even like that. All it changes is the stat, not the outcome and makes it even easier IMO to fix.

I just heard on the news there is a chance MLB will review the call. Hopefully it can be reversed. The player showed such class about the whole thing, a truly nice guy.

Despite it all, we're left with the commissioner overruling an umpire and that's a dangerous precedent to set.

I do believe that this will make it easier for everyone to accept using replays in baseball.

I'm from Cleveland also and think it was a bad call and he deserved the no hitter. Unfortunately umpires are only human and make mistakes like the rest of us. He owned up to it and admitted it. The pitcher also showed a lot of class after the game.

I don't think it should be overturned by Selig though. Once the precedent is set it could easily come back to haunt them if down the road a team misses the playoffs or division by a game and a call earlier in the year cost them that game. At that point it is not just the loss of a stat but real money.

As for replay, baseball games are way to long anyway, that last thing we need is every judgment call being reviewed.
