Umbrellas, do you bring them?

I'm trying to pack light....are they a necessity, or should I plan on ponchos only? We will have a double stroller with plenty of room, but I tend to be an overpacker and I am looking to weed out some stuff. Thanks for any advice!

I normally bring one ultr light weight travel unmbrella. I get too hot with the poncho hood on...so would rather have the umbrella...my son doesn't mind the hood, so we only bring one for me. THe one that I have is very compact and light.

Hi - We don't bring umbrellas...with 3 small kids I guess I have enough to lug! But some other wonderful person on this board suggested the Walmart ponchos that are only 87 cents!!! That way you can use them and lose them. Plus they are very small and will fit easily in a purse, fanny pack or cooler pack. I just bought a bunch yesterday. They are in the camping section and are just clear ponchos.

P.S. Of course, once you have them, it will never rain!!!!

Thanks!
LOL, Heather, I too have 3 small ones and the largest pile of stuff all ready to pack in the corner of my bedroom. I'm thinking if I bring 5 umbrellas for us, it's sure not to rain. One can hope :)
I have ponchos on my to do list, either walmart or the dollar store....have a great trip!

I really prefer ponchos:
1) Your hands are free - if you have little ones, you'll either be pushing a stroller, holding hands, etc.
2) They give you more coverage. Most ponchos cover you to the knees, plus will keep backpacks or waistpacks dry too.
3) Ponchos do double duty to cover seating areas that may be wet (or to cover you if you're in one on front "mist-zone" rows for Fantansmic!

We always took an umbrella. As long as we had it with us, it didn't rain. It was more of a good luck charm.

I found some "mini" umbrellas somewhere in the automotive section of Walmart. I was wandering up and down the camping, fishing, hunting aisles looking for the cheap ponchos (which I eventually found), and there was a display of the umbrellas at the end of one of the aisles bordering on the automotive section. They come in small black boxes. I picked up two, they were pretty cheap. I'll bring them because then it will be a good luck charm. All the rain is now falling here in the Northeast anyway...there won't be any on our vacation hopefully...Any other folks up our way getting SICK of this cold, raw, rainy dreary weather??? Can we say, "Ready for Disney?"

Hi Aurora
Definately sick of the raw rainy weather here in Hartford....looks like we'll be in the World at the same time. Have a great (dry) trip!

I bring ponchos for me and the g'kids (7 & 8) AND a mini-umbrella for me as I can't stand wearing the poncho hoods.

My mini-umbrella is small enough to easily tuck into my "healthy-back" bag along with our ponchos, autograph books, fat pens, checkbook, camera, pressed penny money, etc.

Personally, I don't like it when people have umbrellas in a crowded area. When we were there last time it was raining and I don't know how many times my kids almost got poked in the eyes (and me on my ECV) by them from other kids. Also, when people have them at parades it blocks views.
Go with a poncho, it's easier, less to carry and safer! ;)

No umbrellas for the kiddies ... just me AND I'm very careful about keeping my umbrella away from other people ... probably helps that we go the last week of August when crowds are light.

No KIDDING - DH and I have been lugging around a bunch of ponchos for years and never used them. We usually just play in the rain (I too hate wearing those ponchos - it gets HOT)
We have small umbrellas that we use when we are stuck in a queue in the rain :umbrella: but otherwise we just dodge the rain when it gets bad (usually not for very long stretches .. but MAN can it rain in WDW!). Its actually kind of fun running into shops and such during the rain.
