I don't believe I've ever heard anyone talk about this subject, so I'm wondering. Many people talk about bringing/wearing ponchos, but do some people bring unbrellas? Or does Disney have a policy on them, for fear that someone will get an eye poked out? In addition to keeping the rain off your head, I would suppose an umbrella might also be good for keeping the sun off your head. Last time I went in the summer was for my honeymoon.....hmmmm, 14 years ago.....and I don't remember!

We have compact Totes umbrellas we have used on every trip since 1998. My family refuses to wear ponchos. This August we will bring them again, for sun and rain. Never had a problem except my DD got shot a dirty look once by an older gentleman when she was spinning around and almost hit his arm. They are older now and usually pretty careful with them or they just get wet because I don't haul everyone's junk any more.

We also have compact Totes in our backpack. For a little light rain we don't always want to put on the ponchos and the umbrella's work perfect.

Those things make you SWEAT. And in the summer heat, they're a nightmare. They just do not breathe.

Umbrellas are just fine. I have a small-ish Mickey brelly that I bought years ago -- they still sell them at all the shops, next to the ponchos! -- and it's great for touring the parks. I much prefer it to those ICKY PLASTIC SARRAN WRAP things that are better suited for microwaving chicken than wearing in the rain...

Harumph.

Sure can use them - we were at Epcot when a monster shower came through - DH ran over to get a poncho, and came back with 2 ponchos and an umbrella! We never did use the ponchos this trip - too hot and sticky, but the umbrella was great!

We always carry a couple of those little Totes umbrellas in my daypack. Its a good idea to put a couple of one or two gallon ziplock freezer bags in as well. You can then put the drippy folded up umbrella in the ziplock and it does not get everything wet.

As long as the rain is not coming at you sideways an umbrella is fine in the summer. The ponchos are HOT.

There is no rule against umbrellas; I wish there was. In crowded areas, you have to play dodge eyeball with all the umbrellas when its raining.

For summer, I always recommend umbrellas. Sure the ponchos are great for keeping your clothes dry, but those little, flimsy hoods do nothing when you have pouring rain pounding on your head. Umbrellas are much, much better. And yes, always keep your eyes open so you aren't hitting other guests with your umbrella. That IS annoying.;)

...is a baseball cap.

Often, if you just wanna run from one attraction to another, that'll do the job.

Very helpful especially if, like me, you wear glasses!

Well, thanks for all of your comments, everyone! I think I'll be packing a compact umbrella for our next trip :)

We switched to using umbrellas from those ponchos several year ago. We get the small Totes type that are compact and fit into a Disney souvenir bag. They are less smelly than the ponchos, and easier up/down, than on/off.

I even use my Umbrella for shade from the sun instead of wearing a hat!! :D :D :D
