I know it's supposed to rain a lot on my cruise. Can I bring an umbrella on the boat? If I can, should I? I'm thinking it won't make much sense to use on the ship, but in port would come in handy. Just not sure if it would be seen as dangerous or a weapon.

There's no prohibition against umbrellas. You are correct there isn't a lot of need for one on the ship, but it could be handy for in port. I always have a small one packed in my luggage. It's insurance against it raining because I know if I don't have one it would be certain to rain on my port days. That's just my luck.

I guess size is the issue. I had no problems with my umbrella in Alaska. Very handy. Cruise ships typically have a stack of umbrellas for cruisers in port when I travel.

Please leave your patio umbrella at home.

As noted, you can bring an umbrella, if you wish. I'll just toss in that umbrellas can be a problem, on occasion. In a crowd they can poke people, and holding an umbrella makes picture-taking difficult.

We bring rain gear (jacket with hood/pants) if on a cruise that's more likely to encounter rain. Or just a poncho for those cruises that rain might happen.

I agree with this. Umbrellas in crowds are just rude. They poke people. We use Rain gear. It also keeps you dry in windy rain, where an umbrella is no good at all.

Disagree they are rude, just some people who don't use them nicely are rude. It's easy to be considerate when you're using an umbrella.

However, we much prefer the small $1 rain ponchos. We just have a handful in our luggage that stays there all the time no matter where we are traveling, and if it looks like rain one fits neatly in our back pocket. If we have to use it, often it gets discarded after the rain. Easy, cheap, effective, and don't have to carry an umbrella around.

Sure you can bring an umbrella but personally I wouldn't waste that luggage space. I would just bring a rain jacket or purchase a poncho on board the ship if needed.

We had a drippy day in Cozumel two years ago and they handed out rain ponchos as we left the ship for our excursion
