HI there. My daughter who has HFA needs a stroller for Disneyland. She turns six on Thursday( where does the time go??) We will be heading to DL in May.

On our last trip, we brought our old umbrella stroller which was a by far the best thing we could have packed besides "special blankey", BUT she is too big for it now. We will need one again. But I have not seen any bigger ones. I dont want to spend a bunch of money on a new stroller we only use a few times a year. and it needs to be something we can use when walking to our hotel.

any suggestions?

How much does your DD weigh? Our DD is 5 years old and about 40 pounds or so. We use the McClaren Quest stroller which folds up like an umbrella stroller and is good for up to 55lbs. They are about $100 unfortunately but perhaps you could borrow one for the trip?

I wanted a stroller for our last trip when my son weighed 55 lbs. I bought the McClaren through Target's website for $114.00, but then sold it on e-bay after our trip for $90.00.

I wish I had found that stroller when my son was younger - I really loved it. It rolled great and folded up easy.

Might you be able to get a medical stroller paid for on insurance, or not? I don't really know how the American system works (ignorant Brit! ;) ), but it might be worth a shot.

If you can't get it paid for, try places like EBay, Freecycle and Craig's List, as well as local for sale ads.

Good luck with your hunt!

This is worth a try. Have your doctor write a letter of medical neccessity and an order for the specific stroller you want. Karen

I recommend the Maclaren Volo - the least expensive model. It holds 55 pounds. Check out ebay if you have time.

Thank everyone. I will check out all those stroller ideas! Georgia goes up and down between 40-46lbs.

I just realized that we have the McClaren Volo not the Quest! I wish you could see more of the stroller but this is DD at Silver Dollar City theme park and she was about 37-40 pounds at the time.

There are a couple of threads on the disABILITIES Community Board about special needs strollers (buying them).
I'm not sure if you would have time to get thru the process for getting one authorized for medical needs in time for your trip. And, you might have to get an actual special needs stroller to qualify for insurance to cover. Depending on your insurance co-pay, you may actually be cheaper off getting a regular Maclaren stroller.

Here's a link to adaptivemall, which is a great site for seeing what is available.

She is just an adorable little girl!!!

You can try and rent one through a medical supply place. We just got back from Disney World and we rented a 6 foot ramp for the van. I was going to rent a stroller too, but didn't. My 4 year old ended up driving her wheels all over the parks. She didn't have a problem.

So, maybe around DL, there are places to rent them.

That's a good idea, but I don't know any.
I tried doing a search for DL for special needs strollers, but didn't come up with any.
The ones listed in the disABILITIES FAQs seem to just be for Orlando area. I looked on their websites to see if there were any national links, but didn't find anything.
It's possible some of the wheelchair rental places near DL also rent special needs strollers. If anyone knows, please post.

What about a small wagon? Or does she need the back support? (Sorry, not sure what HFA translates to.)

HFA generally is High Functioning Autism.

And no, a wagon cannot be used. Anything that you pull behind you is not permitted in the WDW parks.

Following is direct from a Disney public website.

Q. Are there any personal items I should not bring with me into the Theme Parks?
A. Items that you may not bring into the Theme Parks include, but are not limited to:

* Items with wheels, such as wagons, skateboards, scooters, inline skates, shoes with built-in wheels, two-wheeled or three-wheeled conveyances, strollers larger than 36" x 52", suitcases, coolers, or backpacks with or without wheels larger than 24" long x 15" wide x 18" high (coolers required for medication may be stored in a locker or at Guest Relations), and any trailer-like object that is pushed or towed by an ECV wheelchair or stroller
* Alcoholic beverages
* Weapons of any kind
* Folding chairs
* Glass containers (excluding baby food jars and perfume bottles)
* Pets (unless they are service animals)
* In Disney's Animal Kingdom® Theme Park (for the safety of the wildlife), balloons, straws and drink lids are not permitted.

Our MD wrote a script for a w/c when our daughter was five. We love it. The script read, "unable to walk community distances."

We got a Convaid Cruiser. We call it our umbrella stroller on steroids. She's almost ten and the thing still fits. It still has a lot of growing room. I'll bet that she'll be able to use it until she is an adult and needs an electric w/c or scooter.

It folds up and is great for stores and trips.
