Umbrella OK for rain or are rain jackets better?

I like an umbrella, too. We usually have a backpack and carry both an umbrella and a packable jacket. We visit in the fall and around Christmas, so the jacket can come in handy.

I've also used the umbrella for waiting for a parade in the sun. It can be brutal any time of the year and it made the difference between holding a good spot and not. The Totes pocket 'brella is kinda pricey, but holds up great. Folds down to six inches.
