The gooey butter cake sounds wonderful
I have seen Paula Deen make similar cakes on TV and have wanted to try one

MammaU4-I meant "Trifle"- layered cake and pudding in a glass dish. I think I spelled it wrong though. It is a great and easy dessert. I have used cool whip instead of real whipping cream.
Here is the recipe:

Peanut Butter Brownie Trifle Recipe

1 (21 1/2 ounce) package Deluxe peanut butter brownie mix or chocolate peanut butter brownie mix
1 (5 1/8 ounce) package vanilla instant pudding mix
3 cups milk
1/2 cup creamy peanut butter
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 cup whipping cream, whipped and divided
2 1/2 cups coarsely chopped peanut butter cups
Garnish
peanut butter cups, sliced

Line a 13"x9"x2" pan with a large sheet of aluminum foil, allowing foil to extend 2" out of both ends of dish.
Prepare brownie mix according to package directions, using packets included in package.
Bake according to package directions in prepared pan.
Cool completely.
Lift foil out of pan.
Invert brownies onto cutting board; remove foil.
Cut brownies into 3/4" pieces, using a sharp knife.
Combine vanilla pudding mix and milk in a large mixing bowl; beat at low speed of an electric mixer 2 minutes or until thickened.
Add peanut butter and vanilla; beat until smooth.
Gently fold in half of whipped cream.
Set remaining whipped cream aside (about 1 cup).
Place half of brownies in bottom of a 3-quart trifle bowl; top with 1 1/4 cups chopped peanut butter cup candies and half of pudding.
Repeat layers with remaining half of brownies, 1 1/4 cups peanut butter cup candies, and pudding.
Pipe or spoon reserved whipped cream over trifle.
Garnish if desired.

I think it is nice to have a few pies to choose from...usually pumpkin and apple for sure, and any other traditional kinds people might like (pecan, mincemeat). If there are kids at the dinner, I think it is nice to have cookies, like homemade choc-chip, as many kids don't like pies. :)

Since my pumpkin pie recipe is in the Gooseberry Patch Sweet and Simple cookbook, it's obligatory at every holiday , but *I* don't like it! I also do the pumpkin cheesecake, pecan pie, and a sweet potato pie. Growing up we had lemon meringue, but it was never *good* lemon meringue, so I never really think of it. I also make some oatmeal cookies w/ craisins instead of raisins.

I always make homemade pies on the day before Thanksgiving. Everyone always expect pumpkin, so I make it every year. But I don't care for pumpkin pie, so I usually make a cherry pie also since that is my favorite. I have also been known to make apple and/or pecan pie for Thanksgiving. This year, I'll be making pumpkin and cherry pie to take to MILs. Don't forget to buy whipped cream!

Nut Pudding

This is a recipe that has been in my family a few generations. We always have it at Christmas and Thanksgiving. It is a rich, moist, flavorful cake-like dessert which has it's own sauce to spoon over when serving. It can be eaten as is or the way we prefer with whipped cream or topping.

Directions:

1 cup brown sugar
2 1/2 cups water
1 tablespoon butter

Boil for ten minutes, pour into greased 8x8" pan

1 tablespoon butter
1 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup milk
1 1/2 cup sifted flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 cup raisins
1 cup chopped nutmeats (pecans are good)

Mix together and drop into cooked syrup. Bake about 30 minutes in 350 F oven.
The cake should be set (pick inserted comes out clean), but the sauce should be of syrup consistency.

Can be served warm or cold, with or without whipped cream.

My MIL does Thanksgiving and serves pumpkin and pecan pies, apple spice cake (fantastic) and usually brownies & ice cream for the kids.

My husband likes to make apple-pumpkin pie. It's a combo of apple and pumkin pie together. YUMMY!

Baked apples, bread pudding, apple pie, cookies - if you want a recipe, let me know!

I have a recipe that I found in the newspaper for pumpkin chess pie. It sounded wonderful but I haven't tried it yet.

I would be happy to type out the recipe if you'd like (I wrote it all down on a napkin!). PM me if you're interested.

Thanks clarabelle and everyone else who's posted (or offered to provide)recipes so far. They all sound yummy! Maybe we'll skip the turkey dinner and go straight to dessert! Now there's an idea.

We always have Key Lime Pie, Cherry Pie and Pumpkin Pie.

We have a very large extended family, and like to do something together each holiday season, but it's just too much to do a dinner for everyone. We have something like 70 people at last count. So we came up with Pie Night. The Monday before Thanksgiving we all gather at my DSIL's house (only one big enough to host us all) and everyone brings at least 2 pies. Then we cut them in tiny wedges and everyone samples everyone else's pies. It has worked great for us, since usually after Thanksgiving dinner we are all too full to eat any dessert. This way we get to sample all the goodies and have our big dinner later in the week. Surprisingly, we have very few of the same pies. Everyone wants to try out new recipes. It has been really fun.
Works for us. Also, we always have enough leftovers to send some home with everyone so we can still have dessert after Turkey Day.
