I got back in to running about 7 months ago for the DL 10k, which I completed in August (yay!). When I first started training I made the mistake of just going for a cushioned shoe that worked for me and my flat feet when I was running in high school. Big mistake.

After three weeks of terrible shin splints, I went for a fitting at a running store.
I found that I roll my ankles inward when running, and I needed a stability shoe. I tried on several and found the New Balance 860v4 to feel the best. I wore New Balance 860s for the rest of my training and felt much better. I still deal with shin splints, just not as bad, and my knees are sometimes bad with all of the road impact.

A friend just showed me her Hoka One One shoes and they look really interesting - lots of cushion & super light weight. But, I'm concerned if I try these shoes they won't provide enough stability control. Has anyone who needs stability shoes use DL these or other ultra cushioned shoes?

I like the idea of the lightness and extra cushion, but I'm worried I'll buy a pair and find they don't provide enough stability. I'm overall happy with my NB 860s, but I'm open looking for something that might provide a bit more cushion to help protect my joints.

Any advice is appreciated!

I do a fair amount of trail running and Hoka's are 1 of the shoes that I run in. I really like them. That being said the guy that introduced me to Hoka's did some damage to his ankles in the ones that he ran in. If you are going to try Hoka's you might want to look at the Rapa Nui ( that's the men's version I think the women's is either Huaka or Kailua) I think those might have a little lower stack and be more stable.

For cusioned shoes I've run in Asics Cumulus, Saucony Cortana, New Balance 890s, Saucony Rides, Brooks Glycerins, Nike Vomero's and Adidas boosts in addition to the Hoka's. Right now the Energy Boost v1 are the shoes I enjoy running in the most.

For other maximum cusion shoes with stability you might want to look at the Brooks Transcend or either the Adidas ESM Energy Boost or Adidas Supernova Boost.

I have been running in Hoka's for the past year and live them. I had ankle ligament repair surgery in February of 2013 and these are the only shoes that work for me. Prior to finding them I was in the NB 993s but my ankle would swell and stay sore for a couple days.

I think you will be happy with them. The sizing can be tricky - so, I would try them on at one if the rundisney expos.

Altra stability shoe...Repetition.....

Just got a pair of Altra Instinct 2.0 that are moderate cushioning and they were not too bad for a quick 10K. Have decided to bring them back and try the the Altra Paradigm,

that are max. cushioning and huge toe box. Enough room where my right foot invited over some of my left foot's toes. :yay:

For the extra cushion I use Addias Boost. They run about $150 more or less.

I bought them at a running store and I must have tried on about ten pairs before I decided on these.

I knew right away when I put them on that they were the ones. I think that's it, you put them on and you should be like YES!

I know if I wear most other shoes my feet are killing me terrible. From the instep to the heel , well, everywhere.

Sigh. Someday that will happen to me AND it will last beyond that first day.

I've had "ahhhhh" shoes and they invariably turn bad on the first day actually wearing them. I've had "eh, just get 'em" shoes that feel decent afterwards.

I think that many people have that ahhhh feeling and it isn't a lie, but I haven't! Jealous. :)
