News reports this morning indiate that half of the remaining 7,000 British troops in Iraq will be brought home by the end of the year. The White House has said that this is a sign of success in Iraq.

So, are we finally reaching "mission accomplished" or is the "coalition of the willing" getting smaller and less willing?

The latter is IMHO the case. The situation in Iraq is far from status 'Mission Accomplished'.
The statement of the White House once again clearly shows that Bush still hasn't understood what's going on.

Actually, I think it is you who hasn't understood what is going on. The British Troops are going to be withdrawn from Basra, a whole different security situation to that where the American troops are stationed, and be replaced by a locally trained Iraqi force.

Prime Minister Tony Blair announced today that British troops would begin to withdraw from Iraq because they had accomplished their primary mission of “getting Saddam’s oil.”

A fleet of hundreds of British tankers, bearing millions of barrels of “liberated” Iraqi petroleum have begun making their way from the Persian Gulf back to Great Britain, where they’ll be met at the docks by triumphant military leaders. The Iraqi crude will be quickly refined into petrol that sells for about twopence per liter.

“We got that for which we invaded Iraq,” said Mr. Blair. “We’re taking our oil and going home.”

The prime minister downplayed suggestions that British forces had also killed or captured many terrorists, provided increased security for Iraqis in their theater of operations and rebuilt schools, medical centers and infrastructure.

U.S. President George Bush called Mr. Blair to congratulate him on “a major haul of sweet Tikrit tea,” and to let the Prime Minister know that American troops would pull out “as soon as we get the rest of our tankers loaded and back across the pond.”

You know how I know this is a joke? Because our petrol sells for a heck of a lot more than 2 pence a litre. A HECK of a lot. Your gas is cheap. Our petrol is unfortunately NOT.

I didn't realize that the UK had only signed up for a piece of the mission. Well then, good job!
