My DH and I planted grass seed last week because half of our lawn died this winter. So, I thought I would turn on the sprinkler and come back and turn it off in a few minutes. I got distracted with my kids and totally forgot. Not, only did I leave it on but left it on for about 6 HOURS!

My water bill is going to be through the roof isn't it? :scared1: I am so sick over this. I have been trying to be so careful and be on budget since our trip is just over two weeks away.

Anyway, just had to vent. Thanks for reading! :goodvibes

Did the seed wash away?

Well the good news is that hte water bill won't get there till after you get home.
enjoy your trip and take one day at a time. And just think how great yor lawn will grow since the soil is so moist.

(hope you didn't wash away all the seed)

I love it when people are able to put a positive swing on things.

Call your water company and tell them you seeded a lawn and give them the dates. They may give you a discount for a short time period post-seeding. I know they do discounts here when sod is laid.

I put straw down, so I hope that kept the seed from washing away. I guess we will see.

Our water company is run by the devil. So, I seriously doubt it will help. But, I will try for sure!

It might not be too bad.

As for the sprinkling of the lawn. Have you have seen a lawn tractor sprinkler? They run along the hose and when they reach the end, it stops the water. You have to physically turn off the water, but it at least stops it from constantly sprinkling. When we bought ours, I paid around $30 for it, 15 years ago and it was a deal. It's heavy and looks like a John Deere tractor.

This is what we have:

Our sprinkler system takes three hours to run all the zones for 12 minutes each zone. We have to run it everyday in the hot summer months. We have gardens that need to be watered, so its not just for the lawn...so, it's one of those things that has to be done...ugh! Look on the bright side, you're not paying our water bill...:lmao::rotfl2:

Hey, that is SO cool! Thanks for sharing! :)

Ughh... I am so glad! I bet your lawn and gardens are gorgeous though!

Our worst bill last year was $200.... dh has the sprinklers going everyday. Just curious how bad yours get? Water in our town is $$$$ dead of winter with no sprinklers and we have all energy efficient appliances, water saving toilets and shower heads our bills are $60.

Ah. We only have 5 zones, run them for 20 min each--or did before we dug up the backyard for the leech field. We're also on a well, no water bill at all.

Was hoping that would help to keep the new seed moist instead of the sprinkler. I thought you meant a regular sprinkler and left it on for 6 hrs. You ran the system twice then?

How much does water cost where you live? I really don't think a sprinkler left on for 6 hours is going to cost you that much. Maybe 5 or 10 dollars at worst?

I'd trade for that $60 bill anytime. In non peak use seasons here, I am triple that. During summer with lawn and garden watering...boy I don't even want to think about it. I had to put in a deduct meter, because truthfully the water isn't the major bill it is the sewer charge they hit you with for the water used. With my deduct meter, I only pay for water now, and no sewage on the lines that are for outdoor use.

We once had a $1300 water bill. We went to Europe for a month and when we got back, our pipes had burst and water flooded our house and then, ran down our front yard into the lake for over 2 weeks! The water company was awesome and just ate our bill. We ended up paying $200 instead. Of course, we had to replace all the carpet, hardwood and subfloors along with the bottom 6 inches of wall, but hey, it could have been worse, right?

If it was a one time thing, it won't be that bad. We have .4 of an acre, and our summer water bill maxed out at about $200. And that was with every other day watering 20 min per zone, 7 zones.

But if you water again, a tip I use because I forget to turn off the soaker hose in the vegetable garden...I set the oven timer.

I did that everyday the first summer we lived in our new house...4 years ago. Until DH got the waterbill....$400! Needless to say we didn't have quite the green yard the following summer. :lmao:

I water bill is typically about $115- $130 in the winter. My DH, I and ODD take quick showers with the water saving shower heads. My two youngest DD's take a half full bath together. We run our dishwasher when full and have front-loading washing machine that also is supposed to save water.

In the Summer the bill is quite a bit more with the kids playing in the sprinkler, water plants/grass, filling kiddie pool, washing cars etc. Probably worst was about $160 or so.

Where we used to live we paid like $30 a month for water!

We get billed quarterly for water and in the summer that quarter runs about $1,200.00. Our water is very expensive. We live in the suburbs, but our water is owned by the City of Detroit for some reason. As you have probably seen in the news, they are a bunch of thieves and just keep raising the price of water for all of the suburbs, and we have no choice but to pay it, or have no water. If you ever want to have a good laugh google the former Detroit mayor, who is in prison right now, and about to be charged with some federal charges, Detroit city council...half of them either went to or are currently in jail, former chief of staff is in prison, a dead stripper, mayor's wife one of the last to see her/beat her up...it goes on and on...its a good true story that reads like some kind of made up crime novel. You won't believe what these clowns have done.

I did that once a couple of years ago... although I left it on for like 24 hours. THe bill wasn't that bad really. Try not to worry too much.
