Ok, I know it's not a swear word, but my DS 3 repeats every line from this movie, this phrase now being his new favorite. When I tell him that's not nice to say, he says it louder.

I just wonder why they put this in the movie. We just got the VHS as a gift and he just started watching this all the time. HELP!

I know what you mean. A lot of movies for kids have stuff like that in it.
DD6 always wanted to see Freaky Friday so I broke down and rented Freaky Friday to watch with DD6 and within a week after watching it, DD6 was saying to me "you're ruining my life!!!". That was a line from that movie.

Oh, that is sassy but its sooooo funny! :teeth:

I agree that words like shut up could easily be replaced with be quiet. :) In our house, "shut up" is way worse than a random cuss word.

it is said in 'finding nemo' as well ::yes::

nigel the pelican says it to a bunch of seagulls.

i watch this movie wayyyy to much thanks to my 2yr old.

Hmmm, I didn't notice that in Nemo, shocking since I know every other line!!!

Not sure why the one in Toy Story stands out, however he's taken that phrase and ran with it. To me, Shut Up is worse than a swear word. I've always hated that more than anything.

I've chosen the "ignore" it route, hoping he'll stop saying it.

We don't use "Shut Up" at my house, we use "Zip it". ;)

"Shut Up" is VERY bad in our house. It is rude and disrespectful. Stupid is also not allowed.

I'm just curious as to why the words "shut up" are considered disrespectful and rude to so many.

If you throw in a certain four letter word, as in "shut the **** up" then yes, it's disrespectfurl and rude!

I could say "be quiet" or "hush" and people will just keep blabbing away.

But when you say "SHUT UP!" people seem to take notice and quiet down.

Why we don't say SHUT UP in our house....

When my DS (now, 13.75 yo) was 3 and he said SHUT UP, it broke my heart. Not sure why, but it sounded awful coming out of his beautiful mouth. From that point on, we banned it from our vocabulary. So much so, that when I hear it (from another source), I cringe.

One funny thing about it....my DS (9) and DD (7) refer to the phrase as the "S-word". Try explaining THAT one! LOL

"Mom....Johnny said the "S-word!"

I get reprimanded from my kids if I even say Shush Up. Too close to the "s-word" I guess.

I still don't get why "shut up" is so bad?

just wait until your kids get to middle school..."shut up" doesn't bother me anymore...:teeth:

Isn't that the truth! There are some words that don't sound bad, but if you ask what the meaning is.....

For me, it always made me feel that my words didn't mean anything to the person I was talking to. As a reformed stutterer, I guess I took offense to it. It's just one of those things that bothers me. I'd rather hear "be quiet", which isn't that much nicer.

I think the phrase "shut up" is usually said with more force and anger than the phrase "be quiet". People will often preface "be quiet" with the word please.

I've seldom heard someone say, "Shut up!, please."

Oh, I have! I'm often heard saying "for the love of Pete, would you please shut up!"

Well, then that was very proper. I think I would have had to respect your wishes since you were so polite about it.

My DD's aren't allowed to use "shut up." I use "hush just a minute" to ask them to be quiet until I can listen. "Stupid" and other namecalling aren't allowed either.

We've also banned the "b" word as I can't STAND to hear "I'm bored." or "It's boring."

I use "zip it: too. When that one doesn't work it gets extended to "zip a dee doo dah" and then my 4 year old knows I mean it!

My daughter learned "what the hell" from her lovely father. It's hard to explain to her that she can't say THAT. She's never once said "shut up".

Thats a cardinal sin in our home as well.
