Well, we got it about a year ago but never had high def hooked up through satellite, so we just watched reg. TV.

Today was the day the Directv guy was coming out to hook it all up and guess what?????

We don't have clearing through our trees to get the angle we need for high def!

I am so bummed.

Have you gotten a upscaling DVD player for it? You could get one of those and it'll make those regular DVDs look much better. Or you could get an HD-DVD or Blu-Ray player and get all high def movies plus those players usclae your standard DVDs.

I upgraded to Comcast HD tuner a couple of weeks ago. In my opinion there still isn't enough HD programming to make a big difference. But I also bought an HD-DVD player and am now loving my HD movies and even the upscaled normal DVDs.

You know, I will admit, we really never watch DVDs. The kids do some, but we don't.

You can't play regular DVDs on a Blu-Ray can you? That was my understanding anyway.

DH wanted it for sports and such. I really don't know the difference as I have never had HD, but I am sure I would like some of my shows in it if I had it!

We love our HDTV!! We have Direct TV HD and we also have an antenna. You might be able to put an antenna up to catch your local broadcast stations that broadcast in HD. You will be amazed at the picture quality once you get it.

You can play regular DVD's on both BluRay and HD DVD Players - you just can't play BluRay DVD's on a HD DVD player or HD DVD's on a BluRay player.

Thanks. Unfortunately, we get NO channels without cable or Satellite. :headache:

And we really do not want to switch to cable. I don't think they offer as much in High Def anyway.

Do you have Verizon FIOS in your area? We have been very happy with the HD selection of channels. There is a big difference from regular to HD. Especially with sports. Good Luck.

That's a bummer!

You know, MIL owns a lot in a members only campground in the mountains near here (we're in the NW) and several people have had dishes installed on their sites (yes, they're really roughing it in their semi-permanent trailers! lol) Anyway because the evergreens are so tall they have the reception problem. Obviously they're not allowed to cut trees down for this but they are allowed to trim "windows" in the canopy to allow signal thru. Obviously its something that has to be modified periodically but is that something you could do? Just a thought!

DH said he would take a look. The problem is that we live on a fairly steep hill and so the eastern sky is fairly dense with trees. We figure we would have to trim about 14 trees to really make it work and DH would have to climb up over 10 ft. on each with a chain saw.

I don't think it will work as I really want to keep him around to pay the bills! :rotfl2: Ok, I want him around for more than that, but you know what I mean....

I have never heard of them so I am thinking we don't. I will take alook.

No, it isn't available.

DirecTV has more HD content than anyone right now. Sorry it won't work for you.
As far as your question about playing regular DVDs on a Blu-Ray player...yes, the Blu-Ray player will read standard DVDs as well (some of the earlier Sony units won't read regular CDs though...strange). A bit of advice though, don't be swayed by Disney's exclusive support of Blu-Ray. I'd look into a Blu-Ray player and an HD DVD player as there's many movies you can only get on one or the other (for example: much like Disney, Fox & Sony exclusively supporting Blu-Ray, Universal, Paramount & Dreamworks exclusively support HD DVD).
A Blu-Ray and/or HD DVD player will also upconvert your standard DVDs to "near" HD quality.
What TV did you purchase, if you don't mind me asking?

I can honestly say I feel for you. We recently purchased a house, and I wanted soooo bad to get rid of cable, and go through DirecTv. Well, turns out the trees in our backyard won't make that possible. So, I've been there and am now suffering through cable.

Orignally when this came up, I told my wife I wanted to cut the trees down int he back, but she didn't want to go that route. I think she might be rethinking her stance after this last ice storm.

We just got high def two weeks ago , we had the same problem but the guy put and extra dish on another place on our house so we could get it. and i live with huges trees all around me can't get cable here.. but my company is dish network.
