This is my first time in TX. I've been in Dallas since Sunday for business and the hotel has lost power 4 times now, and tonight it was out for 4 hours. Talk about a headache! I feel bad for the residents.

I was out in Dallas last night, and I miss how you are not allowed to smoke in bars and restaurants like New Jersey and NYC. Oh and that thread about southern hospitality...I don't know but I just don't see that hospitality all over like people say. It's the same as the north..you meet the people that are nice and then you meet the rude people. It's no different here than in New Jersey.

Although I must say I love some of the buildings around Dallas. :)

I can't wait to get back to Jersey in a few days!!!

ETA: Sorry for the vent...I'm just so annoyed that the power was out so long and we are stuck just outside DFW and there's nothing to do besides a big fishing shop that was also out of power. I'm sure if the circumstances were right, I would really enjoy Dallas. But man, I miss NJ.

Welcome to the great state of Texas! I'm sorry about your visit during the wettest summer here on record! But, thanks for bringing the rain with you, we love it!:thumbsup2

ETA: As for the hospitality issue, the metro areas like DFW, San Antonio/Austin, and Houston are just like anywhere else. In general, the less populated areas are friendlier, save the occasional rude person who won't wave to you on the neighborhood streets. The nerve!

I was telling the driver last night that I'm happy you guys are getting rain since when it gets hot and dry later in the summer, hopefully with all this rain, the resoiviors (sp?) are stocked up! ;) I saw the 5 day forecast and back in the 90s next weekend!

sorry you are having a bad trip.

don't let the door hit ya... :rotfl:

Seriously, what do you expect us Texans to say? We are sorry it is raining so much, we'll have that stopped right away.

And truthfully, I don't know any Texan who considers themselves 'southern' the way those from South Carolina or Georgia do. They are just Texan.

Smoking is prohibited in Dallas bars and restaurants. There was a huge royal stink about it when (now former) Mayor Laura Miller pushed that law through.

No, it doesn't always rain like this, in fact we are just coming out of a very long drought. Most cities are still on water restrictions, as our lakes were still several feet below normal before this last bout of storms.

I'm sorry you aren't having a very good visit. I'm sure the hotel would much rather have electricity on than not.

As for hospitality - well Dallas has a lot of people who are originally from other places - just like any big city. I'm not a native Texan myself. My youngest daughter is. I'll have to watch and see if she turns out friendlier than the other two. ;) If unfriendly people move to Texas, they don't magically get friendly.

The rain isn't suppose to stop for a few more days yet, so I hope you will be able to dash out during the dry spells and find something fun to do. There really are lots of fun things in DFW.

Just wanted to vent and *****. ;) I know I sound whiney but hey, it happens. :rotfl:

I want to book a trip to Austin and San Antonio later in the summer!

You'll have more fun in Austin and San Antonio than Dallas anyway. I promise!

Those of us down south here don't always like to claim the metroplex as part of Texas.

Hmm, I thought the driver said we were in Dallas last night but maybe it was considered just oustide Dallas still since it seemed everyone was lighting up.

I brought up the hospitality thing, because of the thread that was created recently dogging the North for their lack of hospitality. I just pointed out I have experienced what I expected - there are the nice people and then the rude people, just like the North.

I do think I might enjoy Dallas, if I wasn't staying near the airport and the weather/conditions weren't terrible.

Just looking for a place to vent. ;)

I'm sorry you're homesick. I understand completely!

As the old saying goes, East or West, home is best. I hope you get home soon, and in the meantime I hope your trip improves.

Yeah, some of the other people from my company here with me are from Houston (originally Austin) and told me to go to Austin and San Antonio so I can enjoy TX more.

Oh and they are getting a kick out of how I say water. NJ'ers say "werrter" instead of "wah-ter." :lmao: Even the NY'ers that are here say it the 'right way.'

Thanks for understanding. :) I feel like I sound like a baby in my OP. ;)

Oh dear. We've been to San Antonio twice, and both times it was a nightmare. You have way too many people in S.A. and not enough hotel rooms or left turn lanes or parking spaces - that's all I'm sayin'.

I have a feeling I'm going to get flamed for this thread. :rotfl:

At least the hotel beds are comfy. :woohoo:

Welcome to Texas. We have a saying about the weather: If you don't like the weather here, stick around...it will change soon.

Seriously, we have been in the worst drought and now we are near flooding...go figure. We don't like it any more than you. But hey, the rain isn't so bad, just wait till August. It will be over 100* each day and no rain in the forecast.

HEY! Texas is awesome...sorry about the rain, we'll get right on that, lol.

Dallas is cool....so is San Antonio, Houston, Galveston...I love Texas...lived here all my life. Don't feel bad for the residents....we're perfectly fine here, at least I am.

For fun, go to San Antonio during Fiesta time...hecka lot of fun then...or Galveston at Christmastime for Dickens on the Strand...first weekend in December.

Or go to Deep Ellum in the DFW area and go to diff clubs...always fun then!

Sorry your Dallas experience was less than desirable!

Oh, and BTW....we're just gettin out of like a 5 year drought or close to it (maybe a slight exaggeration)...now the Brazos river is flooded (which sucks, because that's where I go to shoot off fireworks on the 4th....NOT THIS YEAR!). I drove over the bridge on 281 S (actually, we parked and walked onto the bridge, lol)....and the river is overflowin the banks, and at least 50 feet over the riverbanks...I can't remember a time in my life where I could actually see water in the river...it's crazy.

Hey stuff happens. We got some seriously nasty rain storms while we were in Florida and I was fussing just as much.

By the way, I lived most of my life in Texas in the Houston area and I prefer it to the Dallas area but Dallas will do especially when you compare it to *ahem* certain places up north. To each their own. ;)

duh!

I'm following you Shawna.. muahahahahaha... now where's your Bambi???
