UGH: subtle Disney girl stuff needed!!

DD is on the way; arriving in July. I'd like to do her nursery in Tinkerbell or Princess but all the home decorations out there are way too over the top for me! I don't want her nursery to look it THREW UP Tinkerbell and the Princesses!!!

If I go with Tink, I want to play up the green and yellow of Tink; not the purple. Last I checked, Tink wore NO purple!!

And if I go with the princess theme, all that stuff SCREAMS pink!

Can't a girl be a girl without being gaudy and frilly???

My boyfriends mother painted my nursery. DS helped too! We don't have the theme you are looking for. We have a safari animal theme but it is very girly. This is what we have: http://www.cocalo.com/item.asp?id=111&brand=&cat=1&type=cat. I love it!

Anyway...on to your dilemma. What she did was take the comforter into Home Depot and had the colors we wanted matched. Then painted the walls the one color, used another color for the door and trim. Then used accent colors and DS stamped the walls. This way we could put as much or as little as wanted. What you could do is paint the walls the main color then in the middle of the wall..paint a stripe of your accent color and then stamp the stripe. It would look sort of like what they sell in the stores but you can control how much is there. Just a thought. And I agree about the whole princess pink overload. It seems like everything out there for girls is pink.

You could always check the items on eBay. I knew when I was expecting my daughter I wanted a classic baby Mickey and Minnie room for her. I was able to find an adorable set that is red, white and blue (denim) for our little girl. It's is super cute! We are expecting again so I'm checking eBay (again!) to see if I can find the same set to match .

Oh! And if you are handy with a needle and thread, maybe you can find some fabric that you like and make it yourself. I unfortunately do not have a talent for sewing.

I saw your post and couldn't help but respond since your idea has been pretty much my approach for all the creations I do. I try to "infer" my character rather than making it over the top.
I think your Tink idea would be fun. For this I can see and organza or cotton crib skirt with petals like on the bottom of Tinks dress. You could create a green a yellow tulle canopy over the crib with flowers scattered about it.
The walls could be a pale spring green or yellow with a perhaps a fun quote that is pixie appropriate... perhaps something about small treasures ... I don't know I can totally see the bed skirt though. Perhaps you could do some pixie/fairy wings as a wall decoration or hang them from a wall knob... Even a fun mural depicting a hollow tree with mushrooms and tiny flowers painted on the wall.

For the princess room.... swag window treatments in pink of course... soft pink velveteen. A princess tiara can be placed on a shelf ... a princess saying on the wall and perhaps a subtle pastel brick side of a castle painted on the wall. Shabby furniture in white, glass knobs in pink or purple.
There's so much you can do with a princess idea... really. Even hanging small replicated princess gowns on a pegged shelf giving her the "choice" of what princess she will be for the day!

I think that the key is buy one piece with Tink, like crib sheets, and then match to the colors that you want to pull out of the piece. We did this with Curious George (it was 10 years ago, and we couldn't find hardly anything except one set that was ridiculously expensive). I found a CG valance, and then just matched colors to it. And then added touches like CG classic toys to the dresser and shelves.

You could do the same thing with Tink. Find one print or piece with Tink that you do like, match the other pieces and walls in colors that you pull from that piece, and then add fairy-inspired touches like flowers and butterflies. It could be so subtle, but cute and could grow with your daughter.

Sure, it is pink, but you could take that and mix in some pink, white, and green solids and prints and some subtle princess touches, like a wall hanging of a crown or castle. You could find a white crib skirt and add some grosgrain ribbon with pink and green in it.

Keep the walls solid (maybe add one accent wall in a different color or pattern) and add the Disney stuff through bedding or subtle fabric for the curtains, a couple pieces of art. I learned my lesson over the years, now my kids have bold, solid background colors, with just touches of their themes through art/throw pillows/a couple nicknacks.
The best thing about going this route is it's pretty easy and cheap to change the theme as they grow or get bored with it...
Now this is a little more expensive, but another item that we discovered can make a big difference is the lighting. Our kids had the usual boring ceiling lights when we moved in. When we did a big renovation on both of their rooms two years ago (new carpet, paint, etc..), we also changed their ceiling fixtures. It did a lot for the feel of the room, without being over the top.

I did a search and disneyfabric.com had a great selection of fabrics that might give you a idea where to start. I really LOVED the one "snow white discovering the cottage" one.
