For a couple of years now my son (11) has had attacks of appendicitis. Because it never "truly" develops (high fever, elevated white count) we just wait for it to go away. Well, it reared its ugly head again this wekend and we spent a couple of hours in the ER.
They called in the surgeon and truthfully I wasn't very impresed with him. Anyways, he said it was gas and put him on a liquid diet for 2 days. Then they gave him MORPHINE!!!! Have you ever heard of a DR. giving morphine for gas? Seemed real odd to me.
I'm still not convinced on the gas aspect and I believe it was his appendix acting up again. (The same thing happened to one of his brothers and his other 2 brothers had to have their appendix removed)
We had been to our pediatrician on friday (ER on Saturday night) and I would think if it was gas they would have known then. His Ped. was really on the fence whether to send us to the hospital then or wait to see. I chose to wait and see since we've been through that before.
Our problem is none of the kids ever had a "classic" case of appendicitis. One had pain and elevated count but no fever. The other had pain and fever then everything went away and then 2 days later he's in the OR for emergency surgery at 4AM.
So off to the Drs. again this afternoon to be rechecked. He's feeling better but still not 100%
Such a pain (no pun intended)
Thanks for letting me vent!!!
