Ugh please stop telling me how to parent!!!

This is a GENERAL STATEMENT to ALL PEOPLE. Nothing directed at the OP or other posters or this particular situation.

Sometimes other people notice things you don't as a parent.

My aunt noticed something about me. Luckily my mother listened and took me to the doctor. :thumbsup2 I ended up needing surgery for what could have been a very serious issue later in life if it had not been noticed & corrected. My aunt noticed it because she had had experience with it in her own daughter.

Do not dismiss other peoples concerns just because you gave birth to the child and think you know best. Experience from other people is valuable.

We've had the cold for less than a week now. We were all healthy until we spent the weekend at HER house . I complained nonstop about all of the old crap in the room we were breathing in ...next day dd wakes up sick as a dog . That night we get home and were all coughing . I got better, ds got better but dd stayed sick. We all got sick again and were still coughing. I dunno but its just a cold i think we should all be okay by Wednesday at the latest . We leave for our first trip to Disney Saturday May 1st 3:00 am ! I hope dd's 100% recovered and able to have a blast but im confident she will be!

Im surprised I havent died from the Vicks thing too! I protested but you know how the elders are they always know best and i was a child I was too scared to outright refuse the Vicks . It was a HEAPING tablespoon full I feel dizzy just thinking about it .

This post, in additon to the others, makes me think there is something else going on here. You are pretty hostile about this whole thing, and it sounds like you are blaming "her" for it, whoever "her" is. Your daughter would be that sick that quickly from something in the house you were visiting, she had it prior to that.

And if the "her" you were visiting is the person you are vacationing with, I probably wouldn't want to go with you if you child had something I could catch either. If your daughter is contagious, you really should stay home.

My two kiddos and I are all sick with the common cold. My dd is a little more sick than the rest of us . She coughs to the point of spitting up sometimes and has asthma. This is'nt the first time she's had a pretty bad cold with asthma . Her doctor most of the time doesnt prescribe anything at all other than her albuterol . Her albuterol is working just fine. It stops her coughing fits and she plays happily/eat/runs around etc. Im not one of those parents that runs to the dr everytime my child has a cough . There is no cure for the common cold with time it will go away. We have OJ, vitamins etc. ....Why do i have to go the dr's office just so she can say ooohhh she has a cold...DUH ...

Anyway several ppl in my family are mad at me for not taking my kiddos to the dr . I know my kids and i know when a cold is serious enough to go to the dr. I wish they would shut up and leave me alone instead of making dumb threats like ooooohhh im not going to go to disney with you ! SO WHAT ? Dont go ! Your loss not mine

My dd has asthma too and I am on high alert if she gets a cold because it can quickly turn into a trip to the ER. If she develops a cough, and the albuterol is not working to clear it - like she's using it every 4 hours or so and it's not stopping the cough - we make a trip to the Dr.s, especially if she's wheezing. Sometimes a round of steroids is needed to clear her lungs. She has had asthma episodes before without the cold symptoms, but a cold just makes it more likely.

I do not run to the Dr. for a common cold or take them, except the child with asthma. I do not run to the Dr. for a stomach bug or aches and pains. Some people go to their Dr. for everything.

Do be careful of the asthma though. Has she ever been hospitalized for it?

In your DDs case, it could be more than a simple cold. With my DDs asthma, it can sometimes take weeks for it to get under control with a bad flare-up. If your DD isn't felling better in a few more days, you may want to give the advice nurse or asthma specialist at your peds office a call to see what else may need to be done, especially with your trip coming up. My DD can go from asthma flare to pneumonia in a heartbeat, so we have learned to keep a close eye on it. Also, take her asthma meds with you to WDW. Since she has just had a major flare, she will be more prone to attacks for a while. My DD had a major flare in WDW, and blew chunks all over the bed at our resort. Guess that's one way to insure we get clean bedspreads! ;)

And not trying to tell you how to parent... just passing on what we have learned dealing with this ourselves!

This is certainly a valid point and worth repeating. In high school I diagnosed my friend's appendicitus. However, since this poster's child already has a diagnosis I'm assuming she has an asthma plan laid out with her dr. with pretty good standards as to when to call the dr.

What are they, 12? :scared:

At this point I just give them the long winded "I have reactive airway disease that manifests itself in cough varient asthma whenever my upper respiratory system is compromised, even with a common cold. I'm following the treatment protocol laid out by my physician...." It shuts them up.

OMG - Thank You for this! I need to memorize this verbatim for DS6, he's had this since he was a baby and people NEVER seem to understand when I'm telling them his coughing is asthma! The look at me puzzled...confused...maybe think I'm making it up! What do I know...I'm just the mom ;)...maybe the 2 pediatric asthma specialists we've been to could convince them!!

OP - just do what you gotta do to take care of your kids...you know them best and you know their needs. YOU'RE the one home with them and the one up giving breathing treatments and listening to them cough all night long. Been there...it's not fun but you know if it's improving or not and when to call the doc.

After a couple trips to the ER, my wonderful pediatrician overprescribed some chewable orapred, to keep in the house, just in case. My 7 year old twins have had RAD, viral induced asthma since they were babies, and this saves me a trip.

The OP didn't mention wheezing - I'm guessing she's had enough experience with the asthma to know when steroids are needed - I know I have!

With the price of co-pays, I think it's ridic to expect you to take your kiddos to the doctor every time they cough!! Tell people to back off-- you obviously know what's best for your family.

I could not agree more with your post.I have 2 kids with Asthma. I don't take wheezing and coughing lightly.

Even if it were free, it would be ridiculous. Not every sniffle, fever or scratch requires a doctor's visit.

I hear you on that one. I don't really care how other people raise their kids. As long as they aren't abusing them they are free to raise their kids the way they see fit. If you don't want to fill your kids with drugs at the first sign of a sniffle or you rush them to the ER every time they get a paper cut it is your prerogative an both equally fine with me.

To often people want to tell others how to live their life. It isn't even just about parenting either. Look at some of the threads on these boards. I have never seen the need to complain about my neighbors drying clothes in their yards, if they home-schooled, unschooled, or formally educated their children, if they decided to get a flu shot or not, if they mowed their grass a little too infrequently, if they raised their kids believing Santa was real or not, or anything else.

The world is full of busy bodies.

Sorry, if your kids sound really sick I would be wondering why you weren't doing something too. Got Mucinex? Are they drinking lots of water? Orange juice would be adding to the mucus thus causing coughing. Are they sleeping sitting up? Are you sure they don't have bronchitis by now? That's what all the kiddos here are getting with this coughing virus/cold. It's taking an antibiodic to kill the bronchitis and mucinex to thin the mucus and stop the cough. Also being prescribed is those little pearl thingies that stop coughing. If everyone is telling you the same thing....maybe you should err on the side of cautious rather than being macho mom.

Why, if you heard/witnessed a person in that condition, why would you #1 presume they must not be doing anything and then #2 proceeding to be a busy body checking up on them?

Gosh--if someone did that to me, I'd have to tell them to stuff it where the sun don'tshine and leave me alone.

OP has her kids in her home and the busy bodies are doing this over the phone. Why ANYONE would feel the need to interview for triage unless she specifically asked for advice is beyond me.

Weird. Weird. Weird.

:hug:I too have asthmatic children. I feel your pain. People look at you like you are evil when they are coughing. You've probably been sleep deprived from round the clock breathing treatments, sleeping in a chair or sitting up while the child is laying back against your chest. I went through many years of zombie land because my DS12 had asthma and allergies bad up until about 5 years ago. While not "cured" they are not as bad. You've probably already been to countless Dr. appts between a pediatritian and other Docs. We had a pediatric pulmonologist. On top of that my DS12 had lots of ear infections and needed eye surgery. I too got lots of unsolicited advise. I'm sure you are well aware of when it is time to go the Dr. I hope your kiddo gets well soon!

My mother was a pediatric intensive care nurse and saw the sickest of the sick children. This has left her completely paranoid and convinced that we should run to the doctor for EVERYTHING.

Headache? Perhaps it's meningitis. Have you considered a spinal tap? :scared1:

A little blemish on the skin? Probably a staph infection. Time for a total blood workup. :scared1:

She's a nut. I think running to the doctor for every little sniffle is obnoxious.

I'm with you OP.

I've lived with this my whole life, and what the anti-coughers don't get is that for many people coughing is normal! An otherwise happy asthmatic child with a minor cough that accompanied a cold of less than a week's duration is not a medical emergency. Several weeks of a lingering cough will still be normal, as long as it is decreasing and doesn't include fevers, etc.
