DH came home for lunch and found our water heater spewing water out from nearly every place it could. It almost seemed as if the seams had come undone. Thank goodness our water heater is in the garage and not inside the house or we could have had one heck of a mess.

He immediately shut the water and electricity off to it and called a plumber. We were lucky and they were able to replace it within a few hours. Not so lucky because it set us back nearly 800.00 :earseek:

I knew it would be expensive, but I wasn't expecting that much.

That stinks!

Thank goodness they were able to replace it quickly, but doesn't everyone need an $800 bill right before the holidays!

how big is this heater? a standard 40 gallon electric runs around 200 at lowes,, and takes about40 bucxks in parts to install and if it was leaking that bad should drain out fast,, take maybe 45 min to chagne it out,, i need to relocate

We got our water heater replaced over the summer.. same thing happened. I bought a 40 gallon tank and had to have someone come in a deinstall the old one (uninstall-sorry) and reconnect the new one.

I bought the w$ter heater at Home depot, which was probably close to 200. We hired some HVAC guys to install, and they charged us $200 to install. With extra parts, hoses and crap like that thier final bill was about 225. All in all it was less than $500.

In my area ou need permits and stuff for even a water heater exchange.

BTDT...in our finished basement...at 1am...teen DDs bags were packed on her basement bedroom floor with her palm pilot and cell phone...when we were catching a plane for WDW at 8 am that very day!!! Feel better yet??? ;) :rotfl2:

Sorry you had to go through that!!!

ARG! I feel for you. It's never happened directly to me but it did to my next door neighbor when I was living in a townhouse. We weren't affected too badly because most of the water drained away from us into another neighbors first floor. This happened, they figure, around 2 a.m. and leaked merrily away for nearly 5 hours before someone got up and saw the mess.

My poor neighbors. Besides the rugs being completely wrecked, much of their furniture and, of course, anything else that was on the floor was soaked.

As for me, I remember coming downstairs that morning and finding my kitchen floor completely covered in water. We had a small 10 gal. fishtank at the time located upstairs in my daughter's bedroom and my first thought was did that spring a leak and, WOW, I had no idea it held THIS much water.

We did our own too, it was a pain for DH because old pipes tend to be that way, but it saved us alot of money. Whole bill was around 300.00.

:confused3 the fun of owning a house.......... sorry you had to go thru that.....ours just sputtered out hot water everywhere........

Whoa! We came back from Maine one time and found that our hot water tank had blown too.. Purchased a new one for $159 and my SIL installed it for us..

Isn't it always just before the holidays that these things happen? In 2003 we had to replace our furnace in November.. Ugh!

For those of you who can install a new water heater that is awesome. My DH is an extremely smart man.. but a handy man he is NOT.

We were charged a bit extra because it was an emergency and they came out FAST (before other customers who were waiting). The water heater is a 50 gallon.

Everything is fine and dandy this morning and man oh man did I enjoy my shower this morning. ;)

Uggh. Why is it always right around the holidays that this stuff happens?
My hot water heater went on my 30th birthday last year which is also 4 days after Christmas. Happy Birthday to Me
That's great they replaced it so fast - we were without hot water until New Years Eve morning and paid $$$$$ because it was a holiday week

(BunsenH puts 'water heater' on Home Depot list.............Just in case)

My DH was NOT a handy man by any means until we paid fortunes for what were basically easy repairs. He learned a lot by trial and error on some things, even some car repairs. He's extremely messy when he works, but I'll clean the mess anyday. I always said the guys in Home Depot knew him by first name because if he was doing any repairs he probably was in there about 20 times in 1 day cause he would keep getting the wrong things! Now he works for them PT!
