Ugh! Messed up banking/ holding points... Can this be fixed?

I have 95 points available to use in my current use year (Feb 2021). 37 are bankable to 2022 which I plan to do. 58 need to be used by Jan 31st, 2022 because a reservation I booked pulled from the current year instead of my banked points and now that I'm within 31 days of the reservation (30 exactly), member services said it can't be modified without cancelling and rebooking to pull from my banked points first.

If I cancel my reservation that starts in 30 days and book a later trip instead that is more than 31 days out, could I then make sure that all of my 95 points from 2021 can be banked into next year 2022?

Tried calling them back to ask as well and once I got in after waiting, the call failed. Any help appreciated.

if you are within 31 days of check in, you can’t modify the trip to later to avoid holding. I made this mistake once and no way around it, I wanted to swap like you do and that was the issue..holding points.

Once points are in holding, they can no longer be banked, and can only be used for a trip 60 days or less.

It doesn’t hurt to try but I would not expect it at this point.

Holding points don't change back to regular points just because you used them to book a reservation between 60-31 days out and then cancel. Their status remains as "holding points" and they cannot be banked into the next UY. I'm assuming that's what you're asking?

What I don't understand is how a reservation pulled from current UY points instead of using banked points...unless the reservation was made before those points had been banked?

The person on the phone said that if I cancel the reservation the points go into holding which means they can be used up until the end of the use year (January 31, 2022) but the reservation needs to be booked within 60 days of the arrival date. So I couldn't book for January now... I would have to wait until November? Is that right?

That is correct, Once points are in holding, the can Only be used for trips thst start 60 days or less from check in.

For example, if you decided to go in September, you could book in July for that trip, For January, it will indeed be November because you can book with them.

I'm a little confused so to be clear you can't use the reservation that starts in 30 days and need to cancel? It doesn't really matter for what's going to happen with the points but if you're thinking that cancelling it will somehow recover points to be banked that is not correct and the info that MS gave you when you called was odd and incorrect if they implied that cancelling it would somehow do that.

At this point you're stuck with points in holding if you cancel that reservation. Those points will need to be used by the end of your UY and can only be used to book a reservation that is 60 days or less out from the date you book. The banked points are also going to expire at the end of your UY if not used by Jan 31, 2022.
