It is scheduled for 8am and we have adrs for 8:20. Would you try and reschedule the adr to a later time hoping that the court thing is over quickly or keep as schedule take the kids to breakfast and have him meet up with you at the park when he is finished?:confused3 The one good thing is that it is by telephone and he does not have to appear in person.

I would keep the ADR. That way your children aren't going to be bothering him during the phone call and he can make the call from the peace and quiet of an empty hotel room.

I wouldn't reschedule it because then he might fill rushed and again you all need to be out of the room anyway.

How does this work? Does your husband have an attorney representing him who will also be on the call? It sounds like a huge deal to me, but maybe I am wrong?

Good luck.

I had a last minute job interview during my trip last year. Since I wouldn't be home, I was offered a phone interview. We had an adr booked for CP that morning and it was to be our last day of vacation. I was able to use a private room in City Hall in MK to make my phone call. It saved us a lot of time that day. I would contact the park that you plan to be in and ask if they can accommodate your husband in a private area for a phone call.

If you can reschedule do so..but if not then dont..I am sure that your husband knows this but it needs to be repeated..Tell him to NOT mention the fact that he is on vacation or out of the state..since he is supposed to be available for work at any time..

Great idea.

If you are able to get a later ADR, then that's what I would do so that the whole family could eat together. (If this works out, you and the kids could still leave the hotel room before the call and look around the hotel or head to the park a little early while your dh takes the call.)

If you can't get a later ADR, then you have to decide if you and the kids would still enjoy yourselves without your dh at the meal. It looks like your girls are old enough to help you fix plates from the buffet, so that shouldn't be a problem. I'm not a big fan of eating out without my dh, but at a Disney character meal I'd probably go ahead and do it for the kids' sake. One more thing to consider...even if you aren't able to get a later ADR when you call, there's a chance you might get seated a little later than your ADR time anyway or you might be able to ask at the podium when you check in if they could seat you a little later. That would give your dh a little extra time to catch up with you all.

Either way, it sounds like your dh should make the phone call his number one priority that morning. As much as I love Disney and the character meals and all, there's no way I could risk having to pay back lots of money just so my dh could eat with us at CP, kwim?

Whatever you decide, I hope it all works out for your family and that your dh has a good result from his phone conference. :)

I'd keep the ADR and let him catch up with you afterwards. The kids would be out of his way and occupied and he can concentrate on the call.

Something similar happened to my DH.

He provided his cell phone # for the hearing, faxed his "evidence" ahead of time, and sat in the car (quiet and private) for the call. The employer never showed up and it only took a few minutes.

I've heard that employers often don't show up for these hearings and even when they do they are very short and to the point.

Good luck!

Do remember that your dh needs all his evidence - as PP posted!!

do make sure your dh's cell phone will work in the park, or at the place your dh will be taking the call!!

I would go ahead with the kids and have him meet up with us. It would seem pretty important that he would be uninterrupted while on the call. Hope this all works out well.

I think breakfast with the characters is waaaaay more important than some silly court hearing.

ITA. You DH should not even be taking a vacation as he should be actively seeking full time work as a condition of collecting unemployment. His former employer will have a field day with it if they find out! The best thing for him to do is to take the phone call back at the resort while you and the kids high tail it out of the room and to the ADR. Have your home phone forwarded to his cell phone so he can take the call on his home phone number. I sincerely hope that everything works out for you and this doesn't blow up in his face. It would really stink to lose unemployment insurance over a vacation.

Dh is currently unemployed and receiving unemployment. Our Disney trip was completely paid for before he lost his job so we decided to keep it. Well this week we received a letter for a telephone court heiring as his former employer is fighting his unemployment benifits. It is scheduled for 8am and we have adrs for 8:20. If he misses the appointment, he would more than likely lose and have to pay back all of the unemployment he has received in the last 4 1/2 months. Would you try and reschedule the adr to a later time hoping that the court thing is over quickly or keep as schedule take the kids to breakfast and have him meet up with you at the park when he is finished?:confused3 The one good thing is that it is by telephone and he does not have to appear in person.

I can't help but think this is a joke. I mean, really? A breakfast vs. ALL YOUR UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS?

I'm going to assume it's a joke, because if it isn't, then I would theoretically have to point out how totally irresponsible you are being to your four children by blowing money you don't have on a vacation you shouldn't be taking, and the biggest issue you have is if you think you can make breakfast. :headache:

has Ashton Kutcher found his way onto the dis? Seriously, it has to be a joke, the OP has been unemployed for 4 1/2 months and already has been once in June, with another trip scheduled in Aug. I think somebody's just pulling our virtual legs...

I missed that June trip. Didn't the August Free Dining code come out at the end of March? OP, did you really book a second trip (and upgrade to Deluxe Dining) after your DH was already unemployed? I'm saying this as gently as possible: Those would not have been the choices I would have made for my 4 kids if my DH had been unemployed since mid-March. I hope that Kickapoo is right about it all being a joke, but I fear that she is not.

I don't think calling in for unemployment while at a Walt Disney World theme park would be such a good idea.
There is too much of a risk that noise, MUSIC from a PARADE, excited children, exhausted parents, etc could be over heard........:rolleyes1

Have you DH call from the quiet of the room. Your DH will survive breakfast without Mickey, especially when it involves money. ;) and the risk of having to pay it back.

In the OP's defense, I don't see any years in the dates of her trips. It is possible that the June trip wasn't June 2009.

I agree, though, that it is rather insane to have booked a trip (and upgraded to Deluxe Dining) after her DH was unemployed. I didn't think you were allowed to take trips while collecting unemployment (but perhaps the rules are different here).

The one good thing is that it is by telephone and he does not have to appear in person.

That is a major thing! I think there was a post on the boards a few months ago from someone who had to appear in person for a hearing during the time their trip was scheduled. Be glad he hasn't had an in-person hearing scheduled during your trips!
Like others said, I'm sure he can miss a character meal to take care of this important issue in private.

Heres an idea...cancel the trip. Use the THOUSANDS of dollars its costing you to go on this trip instead of sponging off unemployment...It sucks that he lost his job but that money could go to much better use than a WDW trip. Everyone loves vacations but they shouldn't be taken when one doesn't know what the future holds job wise to FEED their family and one shouldn't rely on unemployment insurance to pay for that! There will always been time to go to WDW when a new job is found and money is saved back up again!

Technically you pay into unemployment...so it's not totally sponging.

But there is no way I'd be taking that trip. We had to change our plans this year because we had some big expenses, and you know what, my kids got over it.

From Wikipedia:

U.S. Congress passed the Federal Unemployment Tax Act (FUTA), which authorizes the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to collect an annual federal employer tax used to fund state workforce agencies. FUTA covers the costs of administering the Unemployment Insurance and Job Service programs in all states. In addition, FUTA pays one-half of the cost of extended unemployment benefits (during periods of high unemployment) and provides for a fund from which states may borrow, if necessary, to pay benefits. As originally established, the states paid the federal government.[8]

The FUTA tax rate was originally three percent of taxable wages collected from employers who employed at least four employees,[9] and employers could deduct up to 90 percent of the amount due if they paid taxes to a state to support a system of unemployment insurance which met Federal standards,[7] but the rules have changed as follows. The FUTA tax rate is now 6.2 percent of taxable wages of employees who meet both the above and following criteria,[8] and the taxable wage base is the first $7,000 paid in wages to each employee during a calendar year[8]. Employers who pay the state unemployment tax on a timely basis receive an offset credit of up to 5.4 percent regardless of the rate of tax they pay their state. Therefore, the net FUTA tax rate is generally 0.8 percent (6.2 percent - 5.4 percent), for a maximum FUTA tax of $56.00 per employee, per year (.008 X $7,000 = $56.00). State law determines individual state unemployment insurance tax rates.[8] In the United States, unemployment insurance tax rates use experience rating.[10]

So, if I understand this correctly, the OP's husband has paid $56 into the federal unemployment insurance pool.
