UGH! Can't people dress up anymore??

I'm curious - is there a line? Or is literally anything OK?

And with that last word in your posting, "appropriately," you've effectively said nothing, since the word, "appropriately," is subjective, which was the point that a lot of us have been making all along.

I realize that appropriately is subjective, so let me be a little more clear, I understand that if a place does not post a dress code then they have no legal right to refuse service, however I do think that going to a nicer place does require a little dressier attire, I am not talking about formal gowns heels or suits and ties, abut I really don't want to see dirty jeans, sweatshirts and my pet peeve, baseball caps on men, unless it is a bar or bbq joint. Maybe I should have been a little more clear on the subject. I am not saying that this is what the OP saw, just stating my opinion on the whole dining our situation. Lord knows my dad lived in jeans after he retired, but they were nice jeans with a tucked in shirt and clean shoes.

There is no doubt that there is a line, but -- I posted a very wise quotation this morning: "Believe those who are seeking the truth; doubt those who find it." ~ Andre Gide. In the same vein: Anyone who claims to know where that line is, doesn't.

That's a very nice quote but I'm willing to bet that most of us can recognize many who go beyond the line even if we're not able or willing to define it.

I bet a lot of people can recognize where the line really is; but I bet a lot of people who think they can actually cannot.

With regards to "the line". I think some people just don't care!

You can be both over-dressed, and under-dressed, though not both at the same time. .

Really?;)

I've seen women very nicely dressed....then look at their feet enconsed in either some neon crocs or glittery flip flops-so it CAN happen:lmao:

The shoes get me every time. I can put together an awesome outfit but my shoes will trip me up. This is why I need 30 pairs & today I was looking for some new boots. I want a pair that's between a chunky heel & a spiked/stiletto heel. One makes me clomp like a horse & the other makes me break my ankles.

I'm with you there. Some stilletos can look trashy while you're breaking your ankles while the chunky boots feel like lead weights. I've seen some in between but I usually run away when I see the price. ;)

I don't care what other people wear, and I really can't understand why it would matter to anyone.

So, if you're out to dinner with your family and a girl walks in in a thong and pasties, you're fine with that?

Oh good lord. Jeans and flip flops do not equal thong and pasties. I think you need to refer back to Bicker, he made some excellent points.

I went to the unemployment office tuesday and wore blue jeans, sneakers, a button up shirt and a zip up hoodie.
Even took my readers digest with me to read. I was there for almost 3 hrs. I was #337 and they were on #110 when i got there, and tons of people came in after me.

Yes I dress for comfort.

The thong and pasties goes to hygeine issues.

I think most places have a minimum dress requirement (no shoes no shirts no bathng suits, etc)

Thi reminds me of the threads that talk about what people wear at WDW or the way that they act. At home, I'm just as unobservant. If I'm at a restaurant with my husband or with DH and my family, I'm paying attention to them, not to what other people are wearing. Heck, I probably forget what I'm wearing.

In a hotel restaurant, I wouldn't think twice about seeing casual dress unless there was a written dress code at the restaurant entrance. When travelling on business, especially if away for several weeks at a time and working long hours, when I finally get around to having a meal, getting out of business clothes and throwing on jeans can really help me feel like I'm taking a break (casual - not dirty or ripped) - and one reason hotels have restaurants is for the convenience of its guests. Just another POV :)

For me it's not how people dress, it's when they're ugly that really bothers me.

I mean, c'mon, TWEEZE those caterpillars into a semblance of two eyebrows before you go out, for cryin' out loud.

And would it kill you to actually put some lipstick on?

I'm trying to eat, here.

popcorn::

Someone always has to go there.

I think it is a legitimate question. If you say that you don't care at all what other people are wearing then you shouldn't care no matter what it is that other people are wearing (which might be a thong and pasties). If you have a problem with a thong and pasties, then you do care.
