Talk about a potential budget buster. My DS 10 comes out to tell me "mom the tub has a crack in it!" Sure enough the bathtub has a crack in it. it is one of those bathtub enclosures one piece things. Here is the dilemna..my DH is deployed, if he was here no brainer we would get it fixed. he does not know it is cracked yet. So should I wait til he gets home early 2011 and let him fix it(replace it). The boys and I can share a shower(not together of course.) Or should I save some money for a few months, hire a contractor and have him replace it? we already have things we wanted to do as far as home repairs go when he gets home. The good thing no water was in the tub so no leaks anywhere. Ahh! The joys of homeownership.:sad2:

Where's the crack? Sidewall or floor of the tub?
Depending on where it is there are options to temp seal it - there are some quick fix tub repair kits (used a lot of times for manu homes or trailers) or some silicone/caulk may do the trick.

Give it a google and you will be surprised at the number of solutions you will find. :) Hope this helps,

we had to have both of ours done. We had someone come and patch it and then spary it with a fiberglass spray. anyways it looks brand new. Here in CA we paid $450 through a license contrator and MIL got hers for $350 with out a licensed contractor.

Our 1st one dh decided to replace it by himself. First tube didnt fit throught the door because of the angle of the bathrooom. We had to return it. The 2nd he made the hole in the wrong place-wasted money. The 3rd tub he got it right soooooo the 2nd bathroom he finally took my advice and called for the fiberglass spray-lol!. Dont wait to long because it will get worse or leak and yourll get mold.

I had to do this with the tub in out master bath before we moved a year ago, but I only paid $175 to have it done in Louisiana and it did look brand new :). That also came with a warranty which I passed along to the buyer of my house :) Have it done sooner rather than later!

Is it an overlay or is it the tub/shower itself? If it is the tub/shower itself, you want to get it fixed ASAP so the water does not leak through and cause more damage. If it is an overlay, you can probably let it go, though you'll have to watch for mold/mildew.

We had a crack and a small hole in our bath/shower insert at our old house. It wasn't all the way through though...so we bought one of those fiberglass patch kits at Lowes and I mixed it up and fixed it myself. I used one of my small pampered chef pan scrapers (it worked great, but of course it's garbage when you're done LOL). There were a few steps on the kit to follow...but when I was done you couldn't even tell anything had been fixed....even my husband was amazed ;)

Thanks for the replies. I think I will try the kit repair first. I have nothing to lose. If it does not work then I will call in contractors for quotes. Luckily it cracked before the water was turned on. The crack is on the floor about 3 inches from the drain spout. Thanks again. :)

DH has fixed both our bath and DS7's bath. I had never seen a bathtub crack before and was not amused upon seeing them. The kits worked great. It seemed to work much better in the one vs the other as the 2nd looks sloppy, but whatever. It saved the tub from leaking and having to be replaced.
