OK so DS10 is doing measurements and conversions. The avid cook that I am, you would think I knew conversion charts. Poor kid is doing his homework out of the Betty Crocker cookbook. I'm such a bad mommy.......

At least you have a cookbook he can do conversions out of. I always use cook in my class with measurement so the kids can actually see the sizes and relate it to something they know. Of course in third grade it is more about which is larger than actually having to convert. Even now as I cook unless it is a unit I use all the time I look at my conversion chart. I have one that is a kitchen magnet.

ME TOO!!!

Santa put one in my stocking one year...too funny!

Santa had a hard year that year :lmao:

Buffy, I think you are a really good mother to be able to point your kid towards a resource. He will always remember math homework from the cookbook, AND know where to get the information when he is older (which I don't think my boys or DH know). Life skill...yeah, that's what it is...a life skill...

I think that is the best way to do it... I've used a cookbook many a time... and I have even found a few math sites he can use to check his conversions...

As a former math geek, I think it's GREAT that he is using the cookbook. Too often people fail to understand why they have to learn certain math concepts. Now your son will see that there is a real world application for what he is learning since I assume he likes to eat.

even in a cooking / math context you have no idea how much I needed to hear that today!!!!

Good for you! As a teacher, I'm so glad that you got out the resource instead of just doing it for him! The connection that he has will do him well later in life.
S :)

That's why I didn't give him the website that you just plug in the numbers. I did pull it up to check his answers but I made him do the work!

examples of some questions:
6 lb = __oz

32 fl oz = __pt

4 qt = __c

estimate:
A bucket of ice cream holds:
a. 1 gallon
b. 1 cup
c. 1 pint

a coffee cup holds:
a. 1 gallon
b. 3 pints
c. 1 cup
(bonus points if you can guess DH's coffee size) LOL

Yep Buffy, I don't allow them on the computer to get the resource info.. use a book.. than I'll check it or I sit with him while he checks it..
There is a great website that gives you practice questions.. let me find it for you!!! (you probably already know it though)

www.aaamath.com
www.aatstudy.com (this gives you practice questions)

I picked up a kitchen conversion magnet at WDW last year because I always have a hard time with it. My Dad remarked, "Wow, probably the only useful thing in this entire store!" (World of Disney)

I use fluid ounces and mL at work so I know that stuff cold, but ask me what a cup or a pint or a quart is and I have no idea.

Buf, you directed DS to a very good life skill, cooking is the only place I use conversions, and that doesn't happen too often.;)

I've never known you to be wrong about anything.;) Hey, fending for a room full of hungry scrapbookers is an important life skill too. You have to admit, I whip up a mean dessert. They just don't teach the important stuff in life at school.;) :lmao:
