Hi all - haven't been on the flower boards for a while, but just seeing my dafodils starting to come up (but getting snowed on) got me started thinking about gardening and these boards.

I just got back from a carribean cruise on Saturday and there was a big box delivered on Friday from Spring Hill Gardens! (first time I have ordered from them) So I called them and said - I have a problem - one, my ground is still frozen, two - I have 4 inches of fresh snow, three - we are expecting snow on and off for the next week. They told me to try and keep them alive for as long as I could and if they died, just to call and they would send me new ones. She said they could last up to two weeks in the pots they came in, but I just know there is no way I can get them in the garden within two weeks.

Anyone ever have this happen that they sent flowers for planting this early?

thanks and think spring

I've not had that happen, Kathy. As a matter of fact...one year I ordered oriental lily bulbs from White Flower Farm and they sent me a post card telling me that they were going to delay shipment til the snow melted. (It was one of those horrible snow/ice years we had....either 94/95 or 96/97. It certainly helped not having to worry about bulbs. I don't know what I would have done if it had been plants.

I'm surprised Spring Hill didn't delay their shipment. They're in Ohio.....right.....and they certainly haven't had the best of weather recently either.

Spring Hill is excellent about replacing plants that die or what ever...i ordered 18 of something and they arrived moldy and full of baby slugs...ewww!

They sent new ones..then they didn't come up the next year...none of them..they replaced them again.

I have very successfully kept potted starts going for MORE than 2 weeks while waiting for weather to abate to plant them. I placed the small pots in a card board box top - so I could carry them. During the day I set them outside on the patio and watered them. In the evening I gathered them up in the box top and carried them indoors for the night. The key is to allow them the sun they need during the day, water them well since they are in small pots, and to bring them in at night.

Hope you manage it okay.

I ordered some plants for myself and some for my step-dad from SH, also. Because we will be moving soon, I have to plant everything in pots to take with me.
I ordered online. Their email confirmation said that I would be notified via email when my plants were shipped. That would have given me time to purchase pots, soil, etc, and have everything ready. I got no such email. The plants just showed up. There were a total of 3 shipments, and never once did I get the promised emails. Arrgg!

Good luck with your plants!
