Has anybody staying off site used Uber instead of a rental car?

We are going down in a couple of weeks and while I have a car rental reservation in place, the other mom in the mom/daughter combo that we are going down with all of the sudden thinks we would be better off using Uber. Her argument is no parking fees, no gas to purchase and neither of us have to deal with driving in the traffic.

While it does sound great in theory, I just don't know how well it would work out.

There's a couple of good Uber threads on the Transportation board. They should answer your questions.

I live nearby property and almost always take uber to disney or any of the theme parks actually. Where I live, only heading to contemporary is more than what parking normally costs for any of the parks. In addition to your list, you also have the too tired to drive, to sore to drive, maybe should have stopped drinking sooner before you drive parts that go along with it. You can still use disney transportation to park hop or head to springs/any resort if you either want to do that or just want to ride a monorail or boat around... In some ways its better. I can head to beach club or boardwalk for the back of epcot and not need to park. I can then exit out the front of epcot and not need to get to my car somewhere else..

The big one is someone else (usually a cast member btw) will get you back to your hotel safe no matter what you did that day or how tired you are.

We used Uber ALL the time when we lived down there. We lived shortly off property and had busses but they SUCKED, so we'd uber home pretty much every day after playing in the parks, or off to Universal, even off to Celebration.
And we never had a problem with it, and found it to be super cheap! Also comes in handy if you end up park hopping via Disney transport and don't want to have to go all the way back to pick up your car, or if you decide you want to drink, etc.

We're heading to Disney in December & have always only used Disney transportation during our Disney vacations. The hubby & I love Celebration...I never thought of using Uber to go over there for a few hours in the middle of our vacation, but since you mentioned it, now I'm going to consider it!
I've never used Uber before - when you put in your request for pickup & time, does it give you a price of how much you'd be charged? (I understand that prices vary on time/demand)

yeah! it quotes you a price before you fully confirm the ride

It really depends on how far you are from where you want to go.

I would prefer to have my own car, but it also depends on if you're in a condo or a hotel. When I've stayed in an offsite condo, I am shopping all the time for food and stuff (last time we were there for 15 nights, so we were at Walmart and Target a lot). Plus our rental car was only like $200 for the whole time (late August which is very slow).

I took a taxi once from the MK to Marriott's Grande Vista. Husband was asleep so kids and I took the taxi. $50. That was before Uber was around, but even at half that you can see a car may be nice to have.

If your thinking of doing any excursions and use uber, you can use it right now to get your quotes just be careful you don't request the car. that'll give you an idea of time it'll take and cost so you can shuffle around the rest of your trip if it works out. generally on property, any resort or park its roughly 7-10 minutes for them to arrive if you have to wait at all.

We are a family of 5, can we request a bigger car if we decide to uber? we've done taxi's before but never uber.

Whoop-whoop! I got a coupon for $20.00 off my first ride. So that will help cover the Uber ride from the airport to the hotel when we get there. And DD said, mom I can always set up my own Uber account and pay for the ride to the airport when we leave and use a coupon to help cover that ride. Her own account and the payment would be tagged to her bank card, not mine. She knows where I got the coupon, so she can actually pick one up herself. Score for cost savings there.

Uber cannot pick up at the airport, but Uber Black can. It will cost more than a taxi, though!

Uber XL has large vehicles, like full size SUV. I took one from Pop at AKL on the day we moved over (needed a lot of trunk space for DD's wheelchair). Cost like $14 but I had a free ride, so I did tip the guy a $5 (he was so nice). Tip is included, but it was a holiday weekend, so I felt it was a nice thing to do.

Ubers generally don't have car seats that I'm aware of.
