Uber XL and Luggage

We’ve taken Uber XLs in the past with luggage and each time, the drivers were helpful with the luggage. I tipped well for the service. But I’ve read recently that some drivers don’t help with luggage. That’s their prerogative, honestly, but I was surprised to learn this since it has never been my experience. Are there any Uber drivers here who can share their opinions on this or others here who can share their experiences?

I have not used an UBER since my last trip last March. But every UBER driver I have ever had has helped me with my bags. I went to lift one and the one told me that he would get it. I always felt like they wanted to put the bags in the way they wanted them packed in the trunk. I also helped my aunt a bunch of times who has a walker and I would always fold it and the driver again would take it to put in the trunk for her.

Not sure in the Covid world though. Guess I will find out next month how it goes.

Before Covid I used a lot of Uber/Lyft while traveling for work. I would average 6-8 trips per week. I would say 70% would offer help but they aren't required to help. Many don't want you to bang up their bumper lifting bags so they usually jump out to help. On that note, don't bring anything that you can't lift yourself.

I have no problem lifting my luggage and I wouldn’t be upset if they didn’t help. I was just wondering how often they don’t. We may forgo use of DME on the return trip, so that we can just be dropped off at the curb at our airline. I don’t want to be dragging our luggage up two floors from DME drop off.

When I was driving for Uber/Lyft (I stopped more than a year ago), I preferred to handle riders' luggage -- not to be a nice guy, or to encourage tips, but to protect my car!

In the Covid world, however, I am sure a lot of drivers want to limit handling luggage as a means of reducing rider contact. Same logic that DME used when they stopped handling luggage transfers.

Also, some drivers may have physical limitations that preclude them handling luggage. Handling luggage is purely optional for drivers, and there are some drivers who simply can't do it without risk.

Just spent some time in WDW about a week ago, used uber to and from MCO. Both drivers helped with luggage and seemed happy to do so, and we were appreciative that they were so helpful.
