I am just curious if anyone from California has any insight on whether Uber is allowed to pick up at LAX yet. I've been trying to read news articles, but haven't found anything thats less than a month or so old.

We're flying in from Canada early September and I don't particularly want to take a shared shuttle and a town car, even though very desirable, is very pricey. The DBF has been following Uber and is dying to take one since we do not have any here. I wasn't really going to consider it from LAX but now that I'm looking at the prices for a shared shuttle, I'm wondering if maybe this is a good option.

Any thoughts on Uber in the area? Any other suggestions?

i'd be interested in thoughts on uber as well. we are going down tomorrow, taking DLR express to FI Anaheim, but trip is partially business for me so I have to get to Irvine Thursday morning and back Thursday night. Have never used uber before but thinking it might be faster/cheaper/more reliable than taxi?

Nope. They're in a 20 day discussion period, after which they can vote on whether to vote on it. The original timeline was it might happen in September, but then it went to a committee or commission which wasn't included in that timeline. I wouldn't want to venture a new possible start date at this point, as it seems like it's hitting more opposition than anticipated. They are allowed to do drop offs, so you could take them back to LAX.

My husband and I are flying into Long Beach in ten days and were planning on trying Uber. Didn't even dawn on my that the airport might not allow it. duh. Glad I read this here. Once again, thankful for the info on my boards. :-)

Big update. LA city council voted yesterday to allow Uber and Lyft pick ups at LAX. The companies now have to negotiate their contracts with LAX before they can start operating. They also have to add the same $4 surcharge as taxis and they have to change their geofence to stop allowing pick ups in the areas that are just off airport property to avoid the surcharge. The LA Times says the contracts should take at least a few weeks.

I think I read somewhere they were already allowed at LGB and SNA airports. Does anyone know if this is still true?

We're flying in at the end of September. Our current plan is to take a cab to the In-N-Out burger around the corner from LAX, eat dinner, then take an Uber from there to Anaheim. ;) Our flight is scheduled to land at 5:45, so we won't be eager to get on the freeway during rush hour anyway.

That sounds like an amazing plan.... Have you taken uber before?

Great plan! If you haven't had In and Out in a while you will be so happy!

I've never done an uber ride though we are thinking of doing it next time we go. Are they any good? Will there be any around at 6:30 ish at LAX.

LOVE Uber! I was in Anaheim for D23 a couple of weeks ago, and took Uber everyday to and from the parks and the convention center. Download the app on your phone - you can see where the car is, how long it will be until they arrive, the make and model of the car, the license plate number, and a picture of the driver. Everything is paid through the app (except tips).

I use Uber everywhere and love them...but know what the different levels of service are so you know what to expect:

Uber X is the cheapest but is just and average Joe like you and me driving their personal car. Like getting a ride form a friend. Can be any size car...even small ones like a Prius.

Uber XL is the same but larger vehicle that can accommodate at least 4 adults.

Uber Black is a town car or better...more like a limo service with more professionally dressed drivers (usually)

Uber SUV is a Suburban or similar type limo SUV.

There are sometimes other services available like UberTaxi which is just a regular old taxi cab on the Uber dispatch system.

You can go onto the app or Uber.com and get fare estimates.

Uber X would be my choice from LAX to DL even if it meant I had to go off site to grab one. They will have a geo-fence that will not allow a pickup request if you are in the LAX terminal.

Best part about Uber is no tips (you can tip but is NOT required or expected like a cab) and no money changes hands, driver never sees your CC#. All done through the Uber app.

Be sure to do a fare estimate and compare a rental car. I do not ever get a car when headed to DL but on my last trip a rental car was actually the same price as a round trip Uber X fare from LAX

Wow thanks for the replies. There are 4 of us so I guess we will try to squeeze into an uberx car.

Well OP if the contracts for LAX aren't worked out by your trip, I personally like Karmel shuttle.

We used Uber a bunch of times when visiting San Francisco last year, and on a recent WDW trip we used it to get from our hotel on Disney property to Universal and back. We've had zero issues, and the app is really easy to use in terms of both requesting a car and payment.

One thing to note regarding price is that Capital One is offering 20% cash back on Uber rides through April 2016. Once you factor in that discount, at least for us it makes sense to take Uber over super shuttle or another service where you pay per passenger.

What did this fare usually cost you...going from convention center to park or vice versa? Thanks!

Any idea what you think this will cost? Sounds like a good idea as a. We get in at 6pm, b. We've never been to a In-N-Out :)

I've never used UBER, but I have used Lyft in Orlando.
Was very happy with the service and found their prices to be a bit cheaper then UBER.
I have both apps downloaded on my phone, and on both websites u can estimate the prices of rides.

Anyone know if they're doing pickup's yet from LAX?

If not this may be our go-to plan as well :D Apparently in Maui people get a ride to the Target and take Uber from there.
