Hi,

I was thinking of using Uber when next at WDW. I am from the UK, so don't want to use cellular data as I would be abroad (it's something crazy like $10/Mb).

If I organised an Uber from somewhere where there is wifi, then get in the car etc, do I need a data connection again to complete the transaction in any way?

Is this possible or am I just talking nonsense?

Thanks, Stevey

I don't believe you need cellular or internet to complete the transaction. Once the driver picks you up it is on their end.

We are heavy Uber users in Philadelphia and Washington DC. You should be ok doing it the way you describe but one problem I foresee is drivers often call or text to verify your location, which may be an issue at the airport where many people will be waiting for cabs/Uber.

We considered Uber for an upcoming WDW trip and our travel agent told me Uber is legally allowed to pick up at the airport but they do anyway. I mention this only because your driver might need to give you specific instructions along the lines of picking up at an area away from the taxi stand.

Anyone know the average Uber Black fare to WDW deluxe resorts?

IDK Uber Black but I used Uber X. It is much cheaper and always nice drivers and clean cars. I think I spent 40-50 on Uber X compared to the 70 on a Taxi.

thanks wilkeliza!

That's a pricey taxi ride. Our travel agent recommended a car service that would come in around the cost of a taxi.

I read on another thread that Uber users need to take a shuttle (free) to one of the hotels and get their Uber there. If that is true, the OP's planned method wouldn't work.

I've always gotten them at the airport but they usually call and tell me to meet them at the departures gate instead of arrivals or they text this is the car and where I'll be do not look at your phone when you are outside.

I wish more places would allow Uber. We use it so much in NYC and it is always better than our Yellow Taxi service even if it does sometimes cost more.

I agree 100%. After years of using regular cabs in PHL and Wash DC, Uber has been such a refreshing change. In PHL especially, the difference between the two is HUGE.

good to know that about the airport pick up.

The only place I know they won't go is City Walk at Universal. For some reason Orange County watches that like a hawk. On Disney property I've never had a problem and the Uber guys said they love Disney property jobs because Disney doesn't care and leaves them alone.

When you turn off data roaming, try to leave voice roaming on for using Uber. The price of a short call may be worth it. Text messages are usually under $1 USD incoming and around $1 USD outgoing while roaming. Taxis in Orlando are expensive because Mears has a near monopoly. Uber is going to save you money.

I'm in a similar situation. I live in Canada but the phone I use at home does not work in the US at all....no calls or text. I use an app, while in the US, that lets me call/text but it's totally Wifi dependent. So any ideas about using Uber while totally reliant on Wifi? I would only need to get a ride from a WDW resort to the mall and back....maybe an offsite restaurant once or twice.

Whenever I request an Uber, as soon as the driver accepts, I shoot him a text message to tell him my exact location. If you needed to come off of wifi at that point, you could always let the driver know in a text exactly where you will be, what you look like, and that you're from out of the country and won't be accessible. Still could pose a challenge if you're in a busy place, but it's a way to be preemptive.

Yep, I do something similar when we are in the city. I'll text something specific like "I have a red backpack" or "We two adults and a child directly under the street sign"

When i try to get a ride from MCO the uber app won't let me. How are you guys arranging
to be picked up at MCO?

With regards to international roaming etc, if planning on just using wifi, can Uber drivers receive WhatsApp's or iMessages?

I have read that people have taken a free shuttle to a nearby hotel and then arranged for uber to pick them up there.

Uber will not be able to pick you up at MCO or the Hyatt that sits on airport property.
