Orlando city council voted on new rules for UBER and the like last night

http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/breaking-news/os-uber-lyft-changes-orlando-20141215-story.html

In summary, UBER will be required to follow same rate structure as taxi, and vehicles will be required to carry the same permit as a taxi. UBER could also charge more than a taxi ... Rules to take effect 1 Feb

UBER responded they may be forced to leave Orlando market.

The city had proposed rates HIGHER than taxi but backed off.

Was going to use uber in NYC few weeks ago. After speaking to users there were issues. First they want your credit card on file, not comply with that. The other thing was people had their pick up cancelled. Later found out the rate jumped because of demand so the driver cancelled and took a rebook on higher rate.

The other person had paid before $45 for a ride to the airport. This time they were charged $130 without being alerted. It would have been less for a taxi.

Thus I did not use them.

I use Uber in NYC all the time. For the airports I do believe Uber has to follow the flat rate fares as governed by NYC. Besides that it is almost always cheaper for me. Getting a taxi here in NYC is getting ridiculous and the drivers are unsafe. Also I've experience more and more of drivers force raising fare by going the least direct route and blaming traffic or the newest one the protesters. Sorry I live on Broadway if you take the high ways to get to my street you are going way out of the way. I use Uber because it is easy and I can get from point A to point B and if I think I was taken a crazy route I can petition Uber directly instead of having to deal with 3-1-1. The most we've ever paid was 60 bucks from Prospect Park and took Uber because there was no hope of getting a taxi out in Brooklyn at 11pm on a weeknight.

Doesn't Uber tell you the fare just before you book, possibly long before your pickup time?

Then, if you don't like the $130. fare you could just not click the "buy" (or "book") button and seek other transportation and try to get that for $45.

It won't specifically tell you the fare before. If you click the car of the option you want it will tell you the base fare plus fees. You can get a ride estimate but if you get stuck in traffic then your fare can go over that estimate. They do however make you agree every single time if you are getting charge over base rates. So say it is raining and they are charging 2X due to weather. You will have to put 2.0 into the app when prompted or it won't let you hail a cab.

We used uber this weekend in NYC. They gave us a range (like 23-28) when we booked (you do have to click on the estimate button). Both our totals were at the lower end of the range even though we ran into traffic. The cars were clean. The drivers actually pleasant. And the wait times accurate. I would use it again in a heartbeat.

You can get a fare quote for your route. But if there is any surge pricing in effect, the Uber app will make you affirm that you know the prices will be higher before booking, so the additional fare isn't ever a surprise.

Any updates on the situation? I plan to use uber at WDW later this week. I have resigned myself to the fact that I can't get uber from the airport and will have to use a regular taxi.

Why can't you get uber from the airport? The OP says the new rules don't go into effect until 2/1/15. :confused3

I went on uber's site and it allows me to pick MCO airport as a pick up, is that not available then? I also did it on Lyft and was able to get a fare estimate. I was planning on using them when I am solo. Are they allowed on Disney property? I had hoped to take it from my hotel on I-drive to one of the parks.

Bumping to see if anyone has experience using them on Disney property? Specifically, can they get into OKW easily for a pick-up?

We used Uber a number of times earlier this month and also back in August on Disney property and had no problems.
