U.S. Time Zones are weird

When you look at a map and see where the time zones change within states and.............LOOK AT IDAHO!!


I decided to make my own map that makes sense.....................to me. The existing map on top, the improved map below. NOTE: This is just for fun conversation

Isn't there also a section of like Ohio or Indiana that does or doesn't follow the rest of the state? So interesting to look at each state as so different from other states and even major differences within each state.

No logical reason for eastern Oregon to be in the Mountain Time Zone.

Malheur County is on Mountain time because it's economy is tied to that of the snake river valley. It was done originally for train schedules but Boise is the closest city and it's still more convenient for them to be on Boise time.

Similarly, northwest Indiana is heavily tied to Chicago so it's convenient for them to be on Chicago time. Southwest Indiana is more conveniently in the same time zone as Henderson and Owensboro Kentucky.

Hawaii doesn't "do" daylight savings time either. They're on HST -- Honolulu Standard Time.

Yes, the Navajo Nation. which is in Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico follows Mountain Daylight Time.

Your biggest change, population-wise, is moving the eastern time zone west to the Mississippi in order to accommodate Tennessee's width.

In Memphis , it would be daylight until midnight in the summer! I used to live in Toledo, Ohio and we regularly played outdoor volleyball until 10 pm in summer (with no lights).

I think you have to consider the economic clusters as mentioned above.

I'm all in favor of doing away with the sun setting at 4:30pm/5:30pm in the winter. It seriously bothers me. I can take the colder temperatures, but not feeling like I need to go to bed at 7pm.

Right, it's based on the sun, which is why Western TN is in Central Time. It can't just be conformed to state borders.

Nothing is more odd (in my opinion) trying to figure out some of the Indian time zones. I often need to connect with a global IT group, and the time difference is something crazy like 10.5 hours.

Yeah, those 1/2 hour time zones are crazy over in India.
