My family and I will be visiting in late August and hope to spend a day at Typhoon Lagoon. It will be our first visit to a Disney water park. I am hoping someone can give me some advise on a good spot to find some shade. I have read about renting chairs and an umbrella. Is this necessary? We are hoping to arrive when the park opens.

Thanks so much in advance.
:thanks:

Just get there early and you will be fine. There are a bunch of cabana's spaced out all over the park that you can grab for free. I have never been in August but I have been during spring break and we never had trouble getting one.

The reserved chairs are really nice though. It's "restricted" access but it's not monitored by CM's but never the less you don't have thru traffic. We felt at ease enough to leave valuables but the chairs actually include locker rental and towels so it really makes it worth it to us.

I will definitely look into that, it sounds like it would be more relaxing. Thanks so much!

Yes be there at rope drop! We hustled in the park and went right toward Crush n Gusher and found a quiet area with umbrellas and trees. We nabbed an umbrella and four chairs. Two of my family went back to put our stuff in lockers (don't leave valuables at your chairs :sad2: ) that's when DD and I noticed the sign "smoking area". Yikes! But at that point we didn't want to abandon our spot, we were near the edge so we just stayed. Hardly anyone smoked all day and when they did it seemed like they went to the very back of the area where it was shadier. We thought it was a great spot, close to CnG, lazy river access, food and drinks, lockers, bathrooms and not far from wave pool. It was a bit of a hike to some of the other slides. Personally I wouldn't pay for a reserved cabana or umbrella, just be there at opening. Do your slides and a tour around the lazy river before lunch, it gets significantly more busy in the afternoons.

Unless you plan on having someone from your group always staying/watching over your stuff, I recommend renting a locker at the waterpark.

One year, we had stuff stolen from our beach bag (disposable water camera, toy, DS's goggles) while we were at the snack bar. We notified security, who told us that we were not the only people hit that day. Ever since then, we ALWAYS put all of our belongings in a locker.

Thanks to everyone's great advise I am now looking forward to Typoon Lagoon even more!
