typhoon lagoon in the afternoon was great

we were planning on going to Typhoon Lagoon yesterday morning (monday morning) but my mom was visiting us for her birthday, so we went to MGM instead (we did MK, Epcot and MGM with her)....
anyway, when she left for the airport yesterday afternoon, we decided to try TL anyway....
of course there is always the risk of running into the afternoon thunderstorm, but we decided to try our luck anyway....since we have annual passes it wouldn't cost us anything...

so off we went....it was about 3:30 and the park was already emptying out nicely....

first we headed for crush and gusher and over the course of about 40 minutes managed to ride all 3 slides twice each.....not bad....and probably not any worse than first thing in the morning...(and it's a FANTASTIC slide....super great....really really really great...my favorite is coconut with 2 people and pineapple with 3 people)....

the rest of the slides barely had a line at all, except for gangplank falls, which let up about an hour before closing....
the lazy river was fantastic....almost deserted by the time we got into it..

and we still had time for ice cream at 7 PM, before the close at 7:30 (there were still people in the wave pool and on crush and gusher as we left the park at 7:15....

we decided we much prefer those 3 hours in the afternoon to the morning hours, when it tends to be much hotter and much much much more crowded...

we'll do the same thing again later in the week...
i hope we luck out with the weather again (no rain or thunderstorms at all yesterday!!!)....

As much as I like the idea of PM scheduled visits to waterparks, I would still err on the side of a daytime sandwich filler trip to the waterparks. However, we may take a risk this year with a quick PM trip to Wet n Wild after out Universal Studios day, particuarly if its hot there and its quiet enough to get a substantial number of rides in before the afternoon.

my one and only trip to TL in '99 was cut short by a 2pm thunderstorm so I'll definately want to go back there in order to try out all of the slides etc.

the rain and thunderstorm began today before noon!!...it caught us in AK....
the weather has been somewhat difficult to predict this year, with the thunderstorms appearing at various times though the day, not just the expected 4 PM storm.........
by 3 today the weather was clear and hot.....
and yesterday there was no rain or thunderstorm...
we're trying BB tomorrow morning, and are planning another afternoon to TL one more time before we go...hopefully the weather will hold....

when at bb they have refillable mugs.
i think they were $12 w/ free refills--this was great.

The refillable mugs are $10 each. The best thing is that if you buy one in one waterpark you can get a new barcode sticker on it so you can use it again in that park or the other one for jut $6 on another day!

since we only go in for an hour or two, we don't get the refillable mugs..

by the way, we went to TL again in the afternoon....on our last friday at WDW.....we managed to get to TL at 6:15....quickly got a locker to store our stuff and raced over to crush and gusher, where there was almost no line at all.....it mostly just took the time to run up the stairs with the tubes...
excellent....

at 7 we'd had our fill of it (after running up and sliding down numerous times over 45 minutes) so we got our stuff from the locker, bought my son his requisite arctic dots and headed back to the WL....

it was the best hour we had at WDW....

We were at WDW for 18 days in June, we also loved our time at Typhoon Lagoon and the new Crush & Gusher rides are fantastic, however just a word of warning, lift your bottom right off the ground and keep it lifted!!! I neglected to do this and twice my bottom went through the hole in the tube and hit the ground hard, so hard in fact that for 3 weeks I was black & blue,very attractive lol. you have been warned

instead of lifting, i found it easier to sit on the tube in such a way that my bottom was somewhat supported by the bottom part of the tube....that way i was leaning way back as well....i found that to be the easiest way to ride and precluding the need to lift my bottom.....

we were there one day when a woman and daughter were on it and their tube popped......they stopped the ride (stopped the water) and a CM climbed through to get them and they walked back out at the beginning....
it was the slide that begins in the middle...i think pineapple...

really???.....no more 3 riders?.....only 2 riders?.....our last visit to TL was on july 22 when there were still 3 rider tubes....they are soooooooooooooo much fun....i guess they must have had trouble with them..

the tube that we saw pop was a 2 rider tube.....with a woman and little girl on it....it was on monday july 18th...

Last Monday was 25th July I think - the 3 rider tubes were all stacked up by the side of the steps out of sight. No-one mentioned them at all - there was no option to have one. Maybe it was just an "off" day???

i wonder what happened....

the 3 rider tubes are super fun because the more weight you have on the slide, the faster you go....
we were flying through there....a really wild ride....

actually, the scariest ride of all for me was riding alone (on a 2 rider tube)...
you bounce around and it feels as if the tube wants to turn, but it can't due to the width of the slide....but you feel a lot less stable when you're riding alone........

We didn't do TL but did hit BB a couple of times at tea time and would definitely recommend going then. It was really easy to get on the lazy creek and was immediately cooled down when DS14 steered me under all the ice cold waterfalls. We stayed in for a couple of hours each time before going on to a park.

I think the best bet is to always have your water things in the boot then if you want to nip out to a Disney park at some point in the day you are all set. Definitely get water shoes though, the ground is too hot to walk on.

did you try any of the slides in the afternoon?
we only tried BB once in the late afternoon several years ago, but the lines for the slides we like were unbearably long....so we never went to BB in the afternoon again.....for BB we always arrive before opening so that we can make a beeline for the downhill double dipper the moment the rope drops.....

The only slides that had long queues were that horrible one that is the highest one (suffering from jet lag so cannot remember the name) and the one next to it. We went on the toboggan run which had a slight queue and the family raft ride. We didn't bother with any others.

summit plummet and slush gusher i think they're called...
my guess is, our favorite slides (the tube slides at the back) are crowded in the afternoon...
it's just not worth it to stand in a long line for those...especially after you've been on crush and gusher at TL....

we typically only go to BB once each year, and do the whole park in about the first 2 hours....then we have a snack and leave....
we used to only do TL once as well, but this year with C&G, we went to TL 3 times.....and BB only once....

but regardless of park, we never spend more than 2 to 3 hours there.....we only go for the slides and lazy river (and the surfing pool at TL)....
