Type of ID needed to get into the terminal?

If my husband returns the rental car and I take my kids to go check in, what type of ID will my husband need to join us in the terminal when he gets back? Is a drivers license all he needs. I was planning to keep his passport so I could check us all in? Will he need his passport. Do they check ID against a list of people who will be sailing?

A DL is sufficient to get into the port (unless things have changed since our last cruise. They check your photo ID against their list and then let you through. You need your passport at checkin.
