We found out we were expecting our third baby. While any baby is a reason to celebrate, finding out about Sweet Caroline's impending arrival was the most joyous event for me.
On the Mother's Day prior (May 9th, 2004) we lost our son. While everyone else in my family concentrated only on his death and avoiding the subject entirely, my Nana asked questions about his short life and remembered that he existed as more than sadness. About six weeks later my beloved Nana was diagnosed with brain cancer. On October 5th, 2004 she passed away. A few days before passing away Nana asked my mother how my pregnancy was going. My mom said, "Oh Mom, don't you remember? The baby died." Nana answered, "I'm not talking about Patrick." And that was it. A week after Nana died the second pink line appeared and I said to my dh, "It's a girl and she was sent by Nana." Sure enough, on June 11th Caroline Clare made her debut. In the Spring of this year the baby was just learning to say some words and to point. While walking passed a picture I have of Nana on my mantle, Caroline pointed and said, "Nana."
So today, I'm thinking of my Nana and remembering this day two years ago when I was so certain she was still with me and watching over me.
Sorry for being so sappy....
