Are two way radios permitted on the ship? It would be nice to be able to split up but still be in contact with the rest of the family.

Personally, I wouldn't recommend it. Radio doesn't really penetrate the steel walls/decks with any reliability. And you'll just annoy those around you with "CAN YOU HEAR ME?" .

Also, not really necessary, due to the availability of Wave Phones onboard, and the iPhone app for texting aboard.

Radios don't work well on the ship.
You will have 2 wave phones (think really old style cell phone) in your cabin that you can call and text with.
Or you can download an app to your smart phone that allows you to text on the ship without using data.

Ahh...nice. And these wave phones are free to use on board? I've read several things on here about the texting on the app not pushing the text and you have to continue to check it periodically. I really have no desire to check my phone all the time.

You get 2 Wave phones in your room for free. If you want more phones, you have to rent them. I believe the rental fee is $3.50 per day.

In most cases, we had no problem with the texting app. I left it open on my phone and received notifications of new texts almost every time. The one time I wasn't receiving notifications, some glitch had happened and the app wasn't connected to the network. My phone showed I was connected to wifi, but I discovered the app didn't think I was when I went to send a message. I closed the app, disconnected and reconnected to wifi, reopened the app, and the texts appeared. But that only happened once during the course of a 7 night cruise.

Each room has 2 wave phones. And you can get additional ones (as long as they last) at Guest Services for a small fee.

I had read that on here too. And it is not correct. App pushes messages beautifully. If not, its a setting on the phone and guest services can fix it - they did for my mom on the Wonder in May.

You need to be really careful with the two-way radios if you bring them. Just because they are legal in the United States, does not mean that they are legal in all the ports/countries you may be visiting. As a ham radio operator, if I want to use any of my transmitting equipment on board, I have to get advance approval from the master of the vessel, and make sure I don't interfere with normal ship communications. If I want to use it in the ports/countries, I have to get a license from that country (or they have a reciprocal agreement with the U.S).

Based on all this, looks like the radios will not be needed. 2 wave phones per stateroom will be plenty. We actually have two staterooms. Thanks again guys!
