Two UY’s... have a question

Hi guys! So we just bought our third contract, which is a different UY year than the first two. We plan on using two of the contracts to take a two week vacation every summer. The one contract I would be using to book one of the weeks would be short by two days, so I would have to use the second contract to finish booking it. A cast member told me yesterday that I might possibly be moved to another room for the last two days because technically it’s a second reservation. She also mentioned I would probably have to go downstairs to the front desk the morning of the day where my continued reservation starts (where I have to use a second contract). What are the chances that I would be moved to another room? Do you have to go down to the desk? Just trying to see if we can make this as easy as possible. Thank you so much for your help!

Chances are well above zero, and, yes, you'll need to go to the desk and potentially prepare to vacate the unit. They will try to keep you in the same unit but it doesn't always work out. And the desk absolutely has to be involved. MS or a call will not have info or help.

You can use a transfer to move points from one contract to another prior to booking. (Make certain that you are transferring the correct UY.) Then you can pool the points to book the stay (assuming that the points are for the same home resort or that you are inside the 7 month window.)

Depending on the CM and Disney's mood at the time, that may or may not use up your 1 transfer per year.

Anecdotally we just did a split DVC rental across two reservation from two different owners. Basically I wanted to add on extra nights to our already planned trip and my fist owner was out of points. At check in I inquired about hopefully not switching rooms, and the concierge at the VGF said they always try to link split reservations in the same unit type so you dont have to change rooms, "automatically". This was my single time doing this and a single person telling me this, so take it for what it is.

Sorry, but you have found the big disadvantage of having multiple UYs. Hopefully they are at least the same resort, or you will need to wait until the 7 month window to book the last 2 days.

Thanks guys!! I can easily just stay two days longer the second week to make it easier on ourselves. Just the thought of having to pack up and move to another room in the same resort for the last 2 nights of our stay stinks. I’ll have to see what DH thinks and go from there. I appreciate the feedback!

Thanks! The CM I spoke to yesterday said they try to put as many notes as possible on a reservation so you don’t have to move, but they just cannot guarantee it.

If you can get the exact same unit type, and view for both reservations, just have both reservations note both numbers so they know you are the same person. Ask if they can link the 2. And confirm with the front desk when you check in that you have 2 reservations. They will do their best to keep you in the same unit. It's easier for them to keep you in the same unit. You may have to stop by the front desk. Best is to have them linked.

We also got a "free" full room cleaning on our cutover night. Which I wasn't expecting.

Thank you so much! I actually just called and spoke to another cast member for peace of mind, and they said the same exact thing. As long as you have both room types and guests the same, they will link them and we should not have to move. We definitely would be staying in the same hotel/room type, just using a separate contract to extend the time we are staying there. Definitely puts my mind at ease.

I was going to say the same thing - they will say they cannot guarantee it, but they will make every effort to keep you in the same room. When we did it, I checked the night before and they said we'd be in the same room, so we didn't need to pack or anything. we were out at the parks on changeover day when I got a text notification that my room was ready and gave the same room #, then a text notification that we had successfully checked out under the old res #. MBs worked fine when we got back, and but for the text notification it all felt the same.

That’s great to hear! Thanks so much for sharing your experience!!

My sister is staying 2 consecutive nights in a savannah view at Kidani, at the end of the month. Each reservation was made on my account, but it was done as 2 separate reservations. She doesn't want to combine them, because she only wants to buy Disney Dining Plan for one night.

What are the chances she will need to vacate the room after the first night?

Once she purchases the dining plan, in the last day or two before her visit, could I have them combine the 2 reservations then? Or will she then need to purchase the DP for the second night?

They really don't want the DP for extra nights because they are vegetarians and are only getting the DP so they can do some character meals.

Do not merge then as soon as you do the dining plan would be canceled for the one night and need to be added again for both.

With two nights like this, with same guests, MS will sometimes merge since they got a2ay from letting people do this so they didn’t have the plan.

But, there is a chance they will need to move. It will be a slim chance, but unless you add the travel with, it’s a chance, especially since they may see it’s all the same and merge.

So I haven't read all the responses - but if you get the exact same room type you should not have a problem. Because they are two different contracts, you may not be able to combine them into a single reservation, but you should be able to have MS link them in advance and that should do you well.

HOWEVER - I am going to put this caveat in place - on the first day of arrival, find time to go to the front desk and CONFIRM that they have linked the two reservations in the system to keep you in the same room. While I have never had an issue being changed rooms in the 3 times I've done this - I've always checked up front, and at least once the two reservations were not linked, even though I had called MS and had them linked in advance. It really is easier for Disney to keep you in the same room, and so they will do their best, but the more ahead you can tell them, the easier this is to do.

Thank you so much for your response. I always check in at the front desk, so I’ll definitely confirm the linked reservation. I appreciate your advice.

We have two use years, with the second purchased about 20 years ago. Over the years we have made many reservations for the same room size/view at the same resort, reserving some nights with one use year and the rest with the other. On every occasion, we contacted MS and had the reservations linked. We have never had to change rooms.

For the years before they had an online reservation system, we also never had to do anything special at the front desk, such as doing a pseudo check out/check in on the turnover day, except to mention both reservations when we checked in. After the online reservation system started (can't remember exactly when but about 2012), we started to have do that pseudo check out/check in on the turnover day. We were informed at the time that was because the newly created computer system would not allow recognition of the two reservations as one continuous reservation. Since 2015, we have no longer needed to do that and were informed at the time that the computer system was updated to recognize the separate reservations as one continuous reservation when at the resort as long as they were linked in the system, Thus, since then, we have had to do nothing at all, other than to originally link the reservations when made. to assure we kept the same room.

As to MS mentioning that it could not guarantee we would avoid changing rooms, the last time that was mentioned to me was in 2013. In the last three years, I was actually told twice that linking the reservations now assures you will not have to change rooms or do any check-out/check-in on the turnover date. Maybe others are still being told otherwise and possibly some are doing that turnover date activity, but it certainly has not been our experience.

What you cannot do is buy the dining plan for one part of the trip and not the other if you link the reservations. To do that, you cannot link the reservations and will not have any assurance of remaining in the same room.

Just wanted to thank you for writing this! Definitely makes us feel better about the situation!!

I didn't think DVC would permit you to book two reservations for the exact same resort, size and category of room and let you purchase the dining plan for only one of them. I thought they ended that ability years ago after they stared allowing DVC members to purchase the dining plan. At that time, the only way to do it was to move rooms.

For others reading, do not buy different use years unless you have a great reason and you have a good understanding of the pros and cons. We have learned that while most CM's will try to do what makes sense, it doesn't always happen. The more variables the greater the chance of something going wrong. You may have housekeeping, dining plan or room key issues due to the two reservations.

One other item, typically the room assigners will only try to honor your first two room requests so list them in order of importance. We always contact MS 30 days prior to arrival to verify that the requests are still in place, often they are not.
