Two Trips in Two Weeks....A F & W Extravaganza!

After our day in MK, we returned to the resort to clean up for dinner. We drove over to BWI and check in a few minutes early for our 5:40 ADR and were seated almost immediately.

Back in May, when Kevin and I had first tried to plan a Disney trip together, I showed him some menus to get his approval on restaurants where he could find something to eat. Flying Fish was one of them, he said the Potato Wrapped Snapper would be ok.

We sat down and looked over the current Flying Fish menu and Kevin announces "There's nothing here for me to eat." :scratchin
Me: You pre-approved this restaurant months ago. Besides, if there's nothing on the menu you like as it's prepared, you could pick out any of those proteins and I'm sure they would prepare it really plain for you.

I got really worried he's want to leave and go somewhere else, but I had no intention of budging from my seat. Luckily Kevin decided to be a good sport and agreed he could pick up something later when went back to MK for the night.

Whew!

So I placed my order after careful consideration and then not more than 2 minutes later, my appetizer was placed in front of me.
Soup of the Day: Creamy Clam Chowder

I was fairly worried that the soup came out so fast, but I took a taste and it was hot and fresh. It was also the best Clam Chowder I've ever eaten. I'm not expert on the clam chowder subject, but this was just perfect. Creamy, not too salty, plenty of tender pieces of fresh clams, along with celery, carrots, and a super yummy Clam Beignet. They should offer a plate of those Beignets for a really great appetizer!

While I ate my chowder, Kevin had a Ceasar Salad:

This came with a Cheese Frico, which Kevin broke in to pieces before I could snap my photo. I didn't taste it, but Kevin liked it.

For an entree, I went with the special entree of the day - Oak-grilled Seasame Scented Panamanian Cobia, with stir fried snap peas, salsify, lotus root, and wilted pak choy with a Kaffir Lime, Lemongrass, and Ginger Butter Sauce.

This was outstanding. The fish was perfectly cooked and had a nice oaky flavor. I had never eaten salsify or lotus root before and enjoyed both of them, especially the lotus root. There was a lot going on with this dish, but the flavors blended really well. The sauce was especially amazing, I wish I could replicate it at home!

Kevin's 'entree' was the Gruyere Parmigiano Potato Gratin:

I did have a taste of this and it was very good. Strong, sharp cheese flavor and creamy goodness between slices of potatoes....what's not to like?

Much to Kevin's chagrin, I had to order a dessert. I went with the Spiced Red Anjou Pear Upside Down Cake with Candied Ginger Ice Cream, Apple Cider Reduction, and a Matcha Green Tea Tuile:

I need some new adjectives besides, great, fabulous, outstanding, and excellent because they don't begin to cover describing this. It was the perfect autumn on a plate dessert. The pear slice garnish had been candied in the cider reduction, so it was like eating a spiced pear hard candy.

The service was very good, but nothing out of the ordinary. We had everything we needed, when we wanted it so no complaints there.

Flying Fish remains in my top three favorite signatures, along with Citricos and Jiko. I will definitely keep it in the rotation!

Your three dishes look absolutely perfect. Even though it's never been one of my favorites, I really miss Flying Fish now, and I'm looking forward to returning there when we get the chance.

Wonderful review! I love your description of the clam chowder and dessert :goodvibes

Here I am, better late than never. ;)

Don't apologize for being tardy on reports. I've got a bunch of food porn from last December I never posted, let alone the ABD trip I took in September. I'm the Queen Procrastinator.

I'm liking the report so far. :thumbsup2

Loving your reviews now that I finally got over here! This will be very interesting to see what you got Kevin to eat--that potato gratin had me drooling.

Hi there!

So glad to hear that FF was great! It's been kind of hit or miss for us lately.

Enjoyed meeting you and Gram!

Am I the only one who thinks that dish they used for Kevin's potato gratin looks like a vintage bed pan?

:rotfl2:

great start abby! :goodvibes

I do believe you are the only one who thinks that. Me? I think it looks like the Back Side of Comma.

Yes ... I did think comma, too. But mostly it was the old-style bed pan that came to mind. Maybe I shouldn't read these when I'm cleaning bathrooms.

Hey...

Leave the laptop out of the loo!!!! :rotfl2::rotfl2:

HAHA! I phrased that badly ... I'm taking a break from cleaning bathrooms but Sunday is my cleaning day so I have to work other stuff in while I get the house in order for the week. You people are too literal around here! :rotfl:

Sounds like a great dinner at the Flying Fish! Those potatoes look wonderful! The rest does too, but I would have loved those! :thumbsup2

Ha...not much. Things will get much more interesting when it's me and Grandma!

A rare sight, the back side of comma.

Flying Fish has always been great for me.

We were planning to hit up the food booths again for lunch before we left on Sunday, but I had worn new shoes to Disney and after a 16 hour day, I had blisters. :sad2: I thought I broke them in enough before we left, but I guess not.

So after 3 hours of running around FW with blisters, I just couldn't stomach the thought of walking around WS. We got off Soarin' and decided it was about time to leave for home, but I wanted another meal in Disney. Sunshine Seasons was right there, and I had previously only eaten breakfast there so...lunch would be here!

Kevin said he wasn't hungry yet (or did he just not want anything from Sunshine Seasons?), so we agreed to stop on the way home for him if needed.

I had a hard time decided what to get as there were several options that appealed to me (I always have this issue, don't I?). I finally went with the Turkey and Monterrey Jack Foccacia with Chipotle Mayo:
DSCN2767Medium.jpg

The sandwich was served with potato salad, and I decided to get a cookie as well. Sweets make blisters hurt less!

The sandwich was quite large and had plenty of tasty turkey, cheese, a little lettuce, and the chipotle mayo. It was simple, but actually had a lot of flavor from the spicy mayo. The foccacia was soft and fresh and I ended up liking the sandwich more than I thought I would. It seemed to be more than the sum of it's parts.

The potato salad served with the sandwich had a vinaigrette based dressing on red potatoes. This was a really nice pairing with the mayo heavy sandwich. It made for a much lighter potato salad, and it had a nice flavor some tomatoes, onions, and herbs in it.

My M & M's sugar cookie was quite delicious too. It was a thick, soft and fluffy basic sugar cookie, topped with mini M & M's. It was very well done for a basic cookie.

I really liked Sunshine Seasons and can see why people rave about it. While I prefer to eat somewhere in WS while at Epcot, this was definitely a step up from most CS meals. I didn't leave feeling like I had 'settled' for something boring. If you want a meal in FW, Sunshine Seasons is the place to be!

That's it for the first trip! The next batch of reviews coming up will be far more adventurous and very unique because of the special festival events!

I'm looking forward to those review as we would have had three of the same events, but I had to cancel my trip. :sad2:

I've heard one of the reviews of the French lunch that didn't go as good as the reviewer hoped, and it didn't look that good to me either. I really want to hear about the 3D Desserts and weren't you doing the Grand Mariner tasting too? Or am I getting my dining reviews confused? I hope to try all these things next year when I will rebook my trip and try for a take two!

Love your review of Flying Fish! All the dishes look great though my mouth is watering at the description of your entree - probably because I haven't had dinner yet!

Oh no, I'm so sorry you had to cancel! That is such an awful feeling - I missed F & W in 2010 due to a last minute cancellation so I know how you feel.

Was the French lunch review you read from Dis Yoda? I knew 8 people at the lunch, Dis Yoda included, and she was the only one of us who didn't like it. Some of the menu items really worried me when I first read what they were, but I was extremely pleasantly surprised by how good they were. Everyone has different tastes though and they were kind of 'out there' foods. I'll let you know more when I get to the review!

I will review 3D too! I did do the Grand Marnier as well, so that's coming as well.

Thanks Tanz. Hope you had a decent dinner. It's dangerous to read DR's and then have to eat the food in your house.....usually it's such a let down!

Yeah it was Dis Yoda's review, but from what I saw on her plates I don't think I would have liked it, but I'm interested to hear your take. I've seen pictures from the week before and that one looked heavenly! This weekend my booking window opens up for my trip next year, but next year we will be there during the weekend of the Dolphin F&W Classic, so we're going to try that in addition to the F&W events.

I'll be looking forward to your reviews of those events!

FF looks and sounds yummy!
Guess we will have to make our way over there again in the near future! ;)

And I take my hat off to you for being able to resist the Strawberry Shortcake at SS!
