two reservations at same time

It has been 2 years since we last went to WDW. In the past, I was able to split our party of 8 into two groups of 4 when we wanted to eat at different places at the same time. Now, when I try to make the 2nd reservation, it tells me "You already have a reservation for that time. Would you like to cancel?" Is there any way around this on the website or do I have to call?

I haven't found away around it. I had to call about splitting one for our party of 9 into 5 & 4. Plus I has to put the reservations under two different names. Maybe if you tried using a different MDE account?

I just got off the phone from splitting my party for an ADR. I couldn't figure out a way to do it online. Disney Dining wasn't able to tell me how to do it online either, so I think you have to call.

I also found it interesting that I was able to have conflicting reservations when I called. I had 1 ADR for our whole party and then 2 reservations for similar times for both halves of the party. (I then went online and cancelled the one for our whole party)

If you call, you can have 2 overlapping reservations.

Online, if it's within 1hr, you get the message about canceling 1 to book the other. To have overlapping reservations that you book yourself through the MDE site you have to use someone else in your party MDE account/email to book the 2nd/overlapping reservation.
