Hey guys and gals! So I only have 5 days til I leave for my first cp! Whoo hoo. :cool1: And again I want to say thanks to all those alumni who have been so helpful to us newbies. Anyways I got to thinking of another question that I haven't seen anyone address yet. Do you realize that fall also means hurricane season. LOL. I was just wondering how many of you non floridians remembered or even thought about that.:confused3 . Well anyways my other question is for those of you already in Disney. I was wondering, those of you who did the roommate match up, where you got placed. Thanks.

Anyways can't wait to meet everyone, especially you Amy!

Hurricane season means Hurricane Ride Out crew! So much fun! And you get paid like double time, 3rd shift premium and all these other great things.

Hurricane ride out crew is a group of workers in your area who agree to stay and work during a hurricane. When I did ride out I went to the contemporary and helped make and place sand bags. Then they fed us a catered dinner (we actually ate BEFORE the guests which was awesome!) then they put us up in a hotel room for the night. In the morning we got up and helped clean up around the resort the morning after. I went with my friend and we had so much fun!

you could also be in the parks and helping clean up and preparing the park for the storm and cleaning after the storm. They would never put your life in any grave danger though, so during the height of the storm you are usually in some bunker watching movies and playing cards.
Spots on ride out crew are actually kinda hard to get but they are worth it so when they do sign-up in your area you should go for it!

I am totally volunteering for that...!

As far as the hurricane ride out crew, I had all 5 of my roommates called in to help get the parks ready to re-open after hurricane wilma (surprisingly I was the only one who didn't get called)! Its not bad, the only thing we had to worry about was getting our stuff off the floors in case of flooding. Other than that, you take time to hang out with your roomies.

Hey Becky!!!!!!

I was actually kind of wondering that. I mean, sure we've had tornado/hurricane warnings in Jersey, but nothing like in FL. That actually sounds like a lot of fun. Let's do it!

P.S. I love the fact that no one spoke about housing. Hahaha. I heard about people being put in Chatham....

When you do roommate matching, you don't get assigned to any complex. Whichever roommate gets there first gets to pick the complex and apartment size and the other roommate can either stick with what the first one picked or opt for a new roommate.

Thanks for the info.

As for the hurricane ride out crew that actually sounds fun. Lol.

Ride out crew availability will depend a lot on your area. some areas sign up in July or August.

The hurricanes can be intense. I was there when Charlie hit, that was one of the worst ones in years. For somebody from landlocked Missouri ,it was quite the experience. The parks opened early and then closed at one (the guests weren't charged for the day.) Due to my scheduled in time, I didn't have to work. This was two weeks before my end date, so I figured I would go to the mall and then go to Wal Mart to get packing supplies.

The thing you have to realize about Charlie is that it was supposed to hit the coast as a category 2 and skirt around Orlando. They actually evacuated everybody from Tampa to Orlando thinking that Tampa would be hit and Orlando would be okay! I went to the mall, and was on my way to Wal-Mart when they announced at 2:00pm (the storm hit at 8) that the storm would now be missing Tampa and hitting Orlando full force- and it would be a Cat. 4 when it made landfall! :scared1:

Wal Mart was a zoo. Everybody was panicked because nobody had prepared- we were told we wouldn't need to! I got what I needed and then tried to get out of there. It was so busy it took me a half hour to get out of their parking lot. It was 3pm by this time (Wal Mart was closing) and there was a squall line coming- a full five hours ahead of the storm. At this time they were doing construction on 192 (this is before the Wal Mart on 535) and it was already a PITA driving there as it was. As I am on 192 it went from day to night in about thirty seconds. It was raining so hard I could maybe see a few inches in front of me. There was nowhere to pull over because of the construction, so everybody just inched along.

I had the radio on and was scared I wouldn't make it back to Vista it was so bad. Suddenly there were tornado warnings for the area I was in. I thought, "You're from tornado alley. You may not know much about hurricanes, but do know that you do not stay in your car during a tornado! I pulled over into the Monte Carlo motel and asked to wait out the tornado in their office. The guy was from the middle east and had probably never even heard of a tornado before. He told me to go to my car and it would be fine!

I ended up helping some people from Tampa tape their windows, and then once it was decently clear, I got in my car and headed to Vista. It was still pouring and very frightening. I finally got home, and about that time the squall line was done. It was beautiful- the calm before the storm. I had signed up for ride out crew in the MK, but they hadn't put any of the CPs on the list since they figured we would be gone before any hurricanes hit. One of my roommie's was on ride out crew for the Poly, and two stayed in the apartment, one went to a shelter with her friends, and one stayed at her bf's house.

We invited our upstairs neighbors since we lived on the first floor. For the first part of it my roommie and her bf and I played Monopoly with our stuffed animals (the stuffed animals won). We were watching the weather channel, and every time part of LBV lost power our lights flickered. The winds were intense, we looked out the window every so often and the trees were sideways! You could hear what sounded like a shotgun blast as the trees were literally ripped in half. By the grace of God we did not lose power, but most of Orlando and Kissimmee did. When I left two weeks later there were still many places in the area without power!

The next day I took photos of the damage. There were trees and roofing shingles and branches all over Vista. Lightposts were broken, and several trees took out lines of cars in the parking lot. (Thankfully my car was safe). I-4 was backed up to kingdom come with all the people from Tampa trying to get the hell out of dodge since Tampa was fine. It looked like a giant hand had toppled the trees along I-4 like dominoes! If I still have the pictures, I will post them (my old computer died and not all of my pictures transferred).

Most of the time you won't be affected by hurricanes, in 3 advantage CPs (2 spring, 1 fall ) that was the only time I was in. It was only the 4th time in history we closed the parks! (We've done a few more since then, but none were as bad as Charlie).

Once I got over the initial fear it was really cool! I am the only one of my friend who can say they've been in a hurricane. It helps that Vista never lost power. ;) Sadly, I looked and my hurricane pictures were ones that did not get transferred when my old computer kicked the bucket. I might have some that I sent to my parents or in my scrapbook collection, but that will take some doing to find them.

Hey, Im new to here so Hello to everybody and congratulations on getting accepted :) I was just wondering if anybody could help me with a few questions I have reguarding the disney career start program.

I am from the UK and was wondering if anybody knew if I could apply for the career start program. I will have just let high school, but I'm unsure whether I would be able to do this certain program.

Also, how long does the career start program last?

Any helpful information would be greatly appriciated. Thankyou all for your time, Loren :) x.

The Career Start is only for people in the US, unfortunately. However, there are a few different programs for international people. There is the Summer Work experience (which is 3 months long, I believe). Link here: http://www.disneyinternationalprograms.com/summer.html

There is the J-1 Academic Exchange Experience Program. According to the website, it runs 5-7 months, or a full year. Link here: http://www.disneyinternationalprograms.com/j1.html

Finally, there is the Cultural Representative program. This program runs about a year long. Link here: http://www.disneyinternationalprograms.com/crp.html

I'm not a CP or CS person , but I can give you hints about the Hurricanes..I live in South Louisiana where we have recieved the brunt of the past 4 hurricanes and its not a laughing matter. The last hurricane we were forced out of our house because of flooding for almost a week. The best advice I would give you is when hurricane season starts to get active get extra water and can food together. Even if you dont use it by the time your program is up you can donate it to a local food shelter. Make sure you always listen to the people in charge.

Right after Hurricane Charley, we had Frances and Jeanne, which was the time of my college program. I wasn't on the ride out crew or anything, but I was able to pick up a shift doing cleanup work at the Grand. During the actual storms, I pretty much stayed in my apartment at Vista. One of my roommates went around the building, and came back to report that every other apartment was watching the weather on tv, and we were the only ones watching football. We didn't lose power, except for about 20 seconds, (and of course, it had to happen on a 4th and 1 play)

This year we had Tropical Storm Fay, which all the forecasters were predicting to hit as a hurricane, and follow the same path as Charley. Well, it followed a similar path, but by the time it reached Orlando it was only a Tropical Depression. We got a lot of rain, and some wind, but that's really about it.

I would love to do rideout if I am accepted for the Fall 09 CP.
