Wednesday 11th May 2011 -

I don't know how M does it but he was STILL asleep at 6am... I'd been awake for AGES! I finally decided to get up and sneak off to the bathroom to formulate a plan of action for the day. If you have been reading days 0 - 2 you know that Day 2 was a mammoth Disney extravaganza that included our destination for Day 3 - EPCOT. The great thing about this was that:

a) We had already seen Illuminations so could go for the 18:15 shuttle bus return,

and

b) We had a park map and a good idea of the layout of EPCOT - and we'd already ridden one ride off our "must do" list.

I marked all the other "must do" attractions on the map and decided the general order we would try to do things in. I also changed our existing reservation at Coral Reef from 16:15 to a lunchtime slot at 12:30. I was very happy to see that one was still available after all the stories I have heard of people booking so far in advance. For a long time in the run up to our holiday I could not decide between Coral Reef and the San Angel Inn. I think if we had stayed late and had dinner at EPCOT this night I would have gone for the mexican but M had always been keen on Coral Reef and I liked the idea of a lighter fish lunch.

In no time at all I had finished planning and we were both up and ready waiting for the 8:10 shuttle. It arrived promptly and we arrived at EPCOT at about 8:30 / 8:35 - and it was already a scorcher even this early in the day! The other great thing about EPCOT for us was that the shuttle picked up and dropped off there - so no other Disney transport for us on this day - HOOORAY!!!

There was a bit of a queue through bag check and the turnstiles and then we got to experience rope drop for the first time.

Our plan of attack was to head to Test Track first, grab a fast pass and head over to ride Soarin so at the fountain we stuck to the left side while the rope drop malarky went on. The plan worked better than we could have imagined - as the rope dropped and we all walked forward we found ourselves directly behind the Test Track Cast member... and I mean DIRECTLY BEHIND behind her. I couldn't believe it - how the hell had we ended up essentially first in the queue? (after the rope drop people obviously) I've got to be honest - as we arrived at TT and started to make our way through the queue I got a bit emotional about the great start to the day - I was just really really happy!

We actually ended up I think on the third car of the day - as we were front and centre we decided to abandon the FP idea and just ride the thing. We both really enjoyed TT and have a very funny ride photo to prove it! I liked the fact we could get our ride photo saved on the photo-pass card thingy so we didn't have to carry it around all day. M also got very excited afterwards as he found "Bumblebee" in the exit area... please excuse the terrible photo but you get the idea:

After TT we decided to change our plans a bit and headed off to pick up a FP at Soarin. My stupid demagnetised ticket wouldn't work again but there was a LOVELY CM who gave me a special seperate FP ticket doodad that would work all day so I didn't have to keep asking for help. Nice! Our FP return time was 10:30 - 11:30.

Next stop was the whole "In the Sea" area - and I've got to say this was a HUGE hit with both of us.

We rode the Nemo & friends ride - love how they've integrated the characters into the ride and the song was very infectious. Turtle Talk with Crush was fantastic - one of the few things at Disney that had an adult humour edge to it while still great for the kids. Brilliant attraction - I wish we'd had time for another go round! We also enjoyed viewing all the tanks with the manatees, eagle rays, green sea turtles and dolphons clear favourites. To be honest it's obviously not going to replace Sea World for us but it is a great section of EPCOT all the same.

It was about time for our Soarin FP at this point so we headed over to The Land for 10:30 - really pleased with our progress so far.

M got given one of those "how long is the queue taking" lanyard things at Soarin and as far as I remember it didn't take long at all. As you can see by the above picture I was really excited for Soarin... and to be honest I was a little bit disappointed. M was even more disappointed! I liked the whole concept and the "soarin" sensation was all good - but the image quality just wasn't up to much in my opinion. I think they need to revamp it into digital 3D - that would be cool! It wasn't a total wash out but after all I'd heard it just didn't live up to the hype for me.

The exact opposite was true for the next ride though - I had no real expectations for the "Living with the Land" boat ride, I thought it would be a bit "meh" but I actually really enjoyed it. I found the whole thing really interesting and it was a nice relaxing interlude in the day. After this we paused for a bit of water and a quick write up of some notes. M was in charge of note taking this day and he has written that someone was "a bit windy" and although I've got to admire his attention to detail - I'm thinking this is a step too far!!

It was about 12:15 at this point and almost time for our lunch reservation so we headed off to Coral Reef to pick up a pager and peruse the menu outside...

We only had to wait about five minutes for the pager to go off - and actually we almost missed the fact that it was. We were then escorted to a table on the top tier which was a bit disappointing but you do get a good view of the whole tank rather than just a small section if you were sat tankside.

We ordered a couple of cokes and enjoyed the lovely bread and butter - suddenly hunger had hit!! We were both trying to embrace the "try something new" theme we had agreed on re food so I opted for the Mahi Mahi and M went completely against his normal instincts and chose lobster ravioli. I was suprised and impressed by his daring at such an expensive restaraunt!

Turns out both were lovely though so it was all good. We opted out of desert as we still had A LOT of theme-parking to do and thought a visit to the ice cream place would be in order later in the day... and we would DEFINATELY be going to Kringla Bakeri. We both agreed the service was good at CR and the food was very nice - but it is definately over-priced. Our lunch came to something like $72 inc tip which is a lot for what we ordered. I'm guessing most of the Disney table service places are equally over-priced though and it wasn't exactly unexpected at a Disney theme park. We were both really glad to have gone though so it was all good!

Up next - we wander round the World and I experience "School Bread" for the first time.

TO BE CONTINUED... :hourglass

Yay I have been eagerly waiting for the next day!! Great trip so far :cool1:

SO....

World Showcase was up next and for no particular reason we opted to go anti-clockwise around the world. I've got to be honest, this was the bit of EPCOT that I have never really understood. I have read this section in the Brits Guide loads of times and it always left me a bit cold - as in... not very exciting :confused3

EPCOT had been way better than I thought it would be up until this point so I was a bit nervous that things were about to go a bit downhill. On the other hand I was desperate to go to Kringla Bakeri Og Cafe and try this "school bread" that I'd heard so much about. It was also absolutely SCORCHIO at this point and we figured it would be good to step the pace down a notch and just have a bit of a wander. We had only really made it to the bridge the night before at Illuminations but the Cars topiaries were even more cool during the day...

... and I have to say that the topiaries in general were really really good. Probably my favourite element of World Showcase - particularly the Lion King ones.

Anyway - we started out in Canada which wasn't particularly exciting, and being from the UK we didn't loiter in that section either. France was next and I remember this being very pretty and had some lovely Beauty & the Beast topiaries:

I love Lumier so this made me happy

We looked round Morocco in a bit more detail and browsed the shop but I wouldn't buy any of the items they had on offer - very overpriced I would say. I was excited about the next country though as I thought I might pick a pearl in Japan. It took us AGES to find the pick a pearl area - it was just in the gift shop. For some reason I expected it to be bigger and - to be honest - a bit better than it was.

I did look at the settings that they had but I wasn't that keen and thought I would prefer to have my pick a pearl experience at Seaworld instead. I thought the buildings in Japan were quite impressive though.

So we carried on through the American Adventure,Italy, Germany and China where again I enjoyed looking at the buildings - and more pretty flowers:

FINALLY we made it round to Norway where we were both keen to go on Maelstrom but more importantly - we needed a drink and some CAKE. So we picked up a fast pass for maelstrom and headed to Kringla Bakeri for these beauties:

...and I can confirm that School Bread is pretty good. It was definately a much needed sugar hit and I basically inhaled my drink as we had both sweated buckets walking around the world. M really enjoyed his Cloudberry Horn as well - I think you'd have to try quite hard to pick a bad cake at this bakery!!

Having re-energised ourselves we walked on to Mexico and had a ride on the Grand Fiesta Tour - which is actually the kind of thing that is everything I don't like about Disney. I just don't "get" these kinds of attractions and find it all a bit surreal! After this we were hoping that Maelstrom would be a bit better - and thankfully it was. We even watched the short film afterwards... which made us thankful that we hadn't bothered with the other short films on offer in World Showcase! So on the whole - walking around the world was pretty relaxing and we definately enjoyed the cake but it's not something either of us would be dying to repeat compared to the other things that are on offer at EPCOT.

We walked back to the more exciting half of EPCOT via that bridge past the Odyssey Centre (I have no idea what that is - just taking the name off the map!) and decided to do our shopping at this point. We browsed Mousegear for a little while and picked up the obligatory magnet but I don't think we got anything else here. I did try on some ears but I'm not sure they were right for me:

We still had a bit of time to spare before pick up and thought it would be wrong of us not to enter Spaceship Earth - so we did. We both enjoyed looking at the map afterwards but the whole thing was completely different to what I expected - and I'm not even sure what I expected. We also wanted to see what the Innoventions pavillions were all about and walked through West first followed by East. These looked like great places to spend time if you had kids in tow and part of me wanted to go on the big bendy arm things that throw you around but the line was very long and there was a good chance the experience would just make me feel sick. M was keen to see Captain EO (another attraction that seemed a bit odd to me) so we wandered over there next. The wait was 15 minutes so we just had a look round Image Works were I made a Figment...

.... and then we played with the fountains outside to kill a bit of time:

Which was way more fun than Captain EO which was just rubbish. Not much more I want to say about that.

We had a short amount of time left before we had to be at our shuttle pick up point so the last attraction of the day was to be the Circle of Life.

Which was indeed an "Environmental Fable" and all a bit preachy BUT I'm not going to complain about Disney trying to educate kids as there are definately worse things. Time really was running away from us now though so we quickly went to pick up our ride photo that we had taken at Test Track. I say "quickly" but like all things at Disney it took an age because the people in front of us wanted to look at ALL of their photos... twice... maybe even three times before they decided not to print any. M actually wandered off he got that bored. Once I got to the front of the queue it didn't take too long though and we had just enough time to get an ice cream at Fountain View to eat while waiting for our shuttle back to the hotel. I got my favourite mint choc chip and M had strawberry - and they were LUSH!

Just what was needed after a scorching hot day and we had time to sit on a bench and do a bit of people watching outside of EPCOT. I love doing this - everyone else was so busy. Lots of people obviously heading into the park for dinner before watching Illuminations, and lots more people heading out to the parking area to make their way home. This is going to sound a bit hypocritical as I was chomping on a huge ice cream at the time but I remember seeing loads of families with really overweight kids and thinking that it was sad that their parents were giving them this big treat to go to Disney but obviously allowed them too many "treats" of another kind at home and how badly it must affect their health. Makes me really appreciate my parents taking me to all the sports I used to do and feeding me healthy food as I grew up!

Anyway - shuttle was due to arrive at 6.15pm and there were LOADS of people waiting for it. It was ok though as 3 turned up at once - didn't stop some silly pushing and shoving from some people though. Were arrived back in good time and quickly showered, changed and headed over to Sweet Tomatoes where it has to be said that I had more Lava Cake than was strictly necessary - offset by the fact I was having soup and salad for dinner though!

(it's not all mine - only the one in the foreground - the other bowls were M's!)

Somehow we still had the energy for a round of Congo River Golf - Livingstone Course - which I won!! We watched the gators for a while but then tiredness took hold and we headed back to the ranch for bed. We had a bit of a conflab about what to do the following day.

We had a shopping day scheduled in after two full on days at disney - but there was talk of changing this to Universal Studios. This was mainly as I was getting a bit jumpy about the fact our plan had us going to US on the same day as some kind of tweens concert thing being on in the evening. I wasn't all that keen on this idea! Alarm was set for 8am and we decided to make our minds up in the morning.

Great day at EPCOT - a lot better than I had expected it to be and we were both very pleasently suprised by the park!

Great day, very busy!! :cool1: The films in World Showcase are actually really good, the Norway one is the only boring one! The USA one is a bit dull in places but the Canada and France ones are great and worth a look if you ever go back :thumbsup2

Glad you enjoyed Epcot.

I would probably have agreed with you regarding prefering Future World to World Showcase on my first few visits, but now I tend to enjoy just strolling around the countries and relaxing. I guess that comes from doing all the Epcot rides many times.

Kev

Thanks both - I imagine we will be at EPCOT again one day so maybe we will give the other films a chance - but only after we've done everything else! I get what your saying about riding the rides so many times but I'm not sure either of us competely "got" World Showcase. Maybe during the food and wine (is that right?) festival it would hold more interest for us.

Ahh my favorite park, I love Epcot, and I totally agree with Kev, after a few visits, world showcase will grow on you. Food and Wine there is brilliant and well worth a visit:goodvibes:goodvibes
