I went for a run to day. It was the first warm day, about 70. It was a 7 mile run. I thought I was going to die of dehydration. What do you do about that. Do you use the waistband belts. Do they bounce around?

Also I can run the full miles of what ever I run. 7 being the longest right now, but if I stop I am pretty much DONE. What can I do about that. I know I am not going to be able to run a full 13.1 or 26.2. So what do I do.

Congrats on your 7 mile run!

You should be drinking 8 ozs of beverage every 15 min. That is the rule of thumb which is tough to do but you need to drink. Almost everyone use a waist pack of some type. You need to see what feel good on you. You should also be eating something during these miles.

As with anythings, practice makes perfect. You need to practice some walking breaks into your running to get your body use to stopping and starting up again. It takes time but keep at it. Before your know it, it will become easy.

Good luck and training!

Pennyguy,

I have a handheld water bottle I bring with me when I'll be out for more than an hour or when it's really hot. At first I didn't think I'd like to carry anything, but I'm used to it now and it doesn't bother me at all. It also has a little zipper pocket that will hold my keys or a gel pack. I tried a couple of waist packs, but they bounced around too much for me. I think it's how your body is built or your running style that might dictate if you can find a water belt that works for you. Lots of people use them without a problem. If possible, borrow one from someone to try out before you spend a lot of money on it. Another suggestion is to run loops in your neighborhood where you can stop at your driveway to drink water that you've stashed there or run past water bubblers in parks or bring a couple dollars with you and stop at the convenience store for a water. I've also stopped by my friends' yards and used their garden hose.

As far as running longer, if you can run 7 are you sure you can't run 7.1? Then 7.2? If once a week you extend your long run by just a little you may build confidence that you really can do it. Be sure you're not overtraining. If you run until you can't take another step maybe your body is just too tired. Hydrating properly can help as well. Make some of your other runs during the week shorter, but faster and some just nice short easy runs.

Good luck to you. Keep training and you will finish a half marathon or a full marathon. If you think you can't you're right.

I use a CamelBak for hydration. I have a backpack style which I guess is mostly used by cyclists. Runners seem to prefer the waist pack.

I have to admit I am in the minority with my hydration. I run almost exclusively after dark in the summer so I don't get dehydrated too easily. I make sure I am hydrated before I go out and don't bring anything with me. The longest LR I've done has been 14 miles and I did it drinking before and after only.

Now, I know that since I am training for a fall marathon I will be out longer and have to find a way to hydrate. What I anticipate doing is doing 2 8 mile or 2 10 mile or whatever loops and keeping water in my mailbox. I will do the course, grab the water, and then do a second loop or another route. I have just not found a comfortable way to carry water with me and keep my pace where it has to be.

Thanks everyone for the ideas. I just get so bored doing my neighborhood all the time. My wife went with my the other day for a shorter run and she brought water and I carried it for a bit but I found it annoying and it just didn't feel right.

And what I should have said and meant is that, I know I can't run a 13.1 or 26.2 WITHOUT STOPPING. I know I can run them sooner or later. Well thats my goal anyway. ;)

WOW that is alot of liquid. How do you not get a side cramp???

I walk/run with the waistbelt with 1-4 bottles, depending on how far I plan to go, and also on how hot it is. I usually run in the afternoon in the heat, so I almost always take some water with me. The belt doesn't bother me, but perhaps that's because I'm not speedy.

I ran the 7 miles in 1:03:13. I'm not very fast either so I might just give it a try. What is the name of yours? Are there any better or more stably then others?
Thanks

I have the 2 bottle Fuel Belt.

http://www.fuelbelt.com/fuel_belts/2_bottle.html

It does bounce unless I wear it directly on my hips or higher up on my waist. I don't bother taking it out with me unless it's a hot day or if I'm going more than 6 miles. I'll fill one bottle with water and then the 2nd with Gaterade.

I know it's months away but when you're training in winter or the colder months - keep the fuel belt (and Sports Beans if you use them) inside your jacket. On cold days, the water could freeze and the Sports Beans turn into rocks.

I haven't been able to completely run a 1/2 non stop yet. I usually take short walking breaks through the water stops - either because I'm drinking or I'm afraid of slipping on the cups and water.

Me too - anything over 6 miles and I wear my belt. Otherwise I just carry a bottle and set it down somewhere out on my run. I use the Amphipod belt and usually only use 2 bottles except for long runs. That is the beauty of it, I can use 1 - 4 bottles with a pouch. Doesn't bounce on me. http://www.amphipod.com/8400/8400.html

I also stake out my runs so I go through the park, or by a store or water fountain somewhere. If I am going through the park a couple of times I don't need as much water since I can refill.

enjoy,
Duane

I wear the nathan speed 2- took it to the princess half and once i found where it settled (1mile or so in) it didn't bounce too much. I think earlier posts are right tho, it probably depends on your shape and style of belt. The only comment i'd make about the nathan water bottles is that they don't seal that well and i lose about 1/5 of each bottle contents! maybe try a different make first :rotfl:

I have the same belt and haven't had problems with leaking bottles. Maybe the bottles you got are faulty? That's a bummer that you're having problems with them.

Personally I find the belt to be annoying, but I wear it on runs over 6 miles when I don't have other options. I think it's a matter of experimenting and finding what works for you. Sometimes I carry a bottle and in the summer can refill at water fountains. During the winter when all the fountains are shut off it can be trickier. Good luck finding something that works for you!
