Two Aussie first-timers in Disney! Lots of photos! NEW- FINAL CHAPTER! - Ch 20, Pg 30

I just sat here and read alll your TR so far! I am so jealous that you've seen more of my country than I have! One day, late late in life, I'll be able to hopefully say that too. Not just about my country but many countries!!

I'll be in Disney World in a couple weeks staying at POP. I'll make sure to try the cheese popcorn!

WOW I just read your TR and I LOVE IT! I love hearing what folks from other countries think of the USA. When I go to other countries I'm always thirsty due to the "tiny" drinks. :rotfl2:

I'm so glad you liked WDW and at least so far you seemed to like our country pretty well. I'm glad most people were nice to you. (It seems that way so far, at least.)

I love Savannah as well. I can't wait to hear what you thought of DC and New York. I've been to Savannah, San Francisco, and LA just once each, and DC and NYC many times. My favorite out of all of them is probably Savannah because I'm not a "big city" person. I would love to go to Australia some day - via Qantas, of course!

Anyway, thanks so much for sharing and for visiting our country!! Can't wait to read more! :thumbsup2

Hi everybody!

Wow, I can't believe there's so many replies!! I thought people probably wouldn't stick around once I finished the Disney part of our trip - but yay!! Thanks so much for hanging around, guys!! :woohoo:

Glendamax... Glad you liked the photos!! Smooches to you too!! :thumbsup2

Marion... Yayyyy, a movie night dedicated to me!! What more could I ask for!?! Dirty Dancing and Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil... sounds like a great night in!! Don't forget that cheese popcorn... popcorn::

punkin413... Ooh, I love your photo with Paula Deen!! Lucky you!! Thanks so much for posting it! She wasn't there when we were - I guess she's not there very often anymore!? But yes, the food was great!! I laughed at the thought of you and husband making ghost noises to the people on the ghost tour!! :lmao:

Scutapipig... Yay! Thanks for still reading along... Nice to know you're still enjoying it!

Marjol... You should definitely try to visit Savannah sometime! It really is a beautiful place! Did you go to Washington too?

tashasmum... Yay, I've convinced more people to watch Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil!! It's a great movie! Most people say the book is better, but I watched the movie first, and I think it's just fine!! :)

Katie Dawn... Wow, thanks for reading the whole trip report in one go! I'm impressed! I used to be a Girl Guide here in Australia, so I took notice when they mentioned her home, but we didn't go in and visit. Cute story about taking the girls to the cemetery! I can imagine that it wouldn't have been the most "fun" outing! :goodvibes

QuirkyButterfly... You should definitely check out Savannah, if your schedule allows for it! It's really a lovely place, and so different to anything else we saw in America. It's nice to have a taste of the "old South"! The proposal is still a little way off yet... It doesn't happen until we go to Toronto. Next up is Washington DC, then New York, then Toronto! Weee!

puffinp51... How exciting! I'm so glad I inspired you to want to visit Savannah! If you do, you'll have to let me know how you liked it! :)

KathyRN137... Glad you're enjoying the rest of the trip report, apart from the Disney bits! :yay:

Donald is #1... Ooh, good to hear that someone else had the same thoughts about entering Savannah as I did! You're right about the historic district - we were so happy to just walk around and explore. What a lovely place!

buffy0214... Your post made me laugh!! Nobody puts Baby in the corner! Hehee! My favourite line, though, is definitely, "I carried a watermelon?!" If you do make it to Savannah, we stayed at "The B&B Inn", which is on West Gordon Street. In fact, here's the website!! http://www.savannahbnb.com/ I definitely recommend it! There are heaps of B&B's in Savannah, but lots of them are very expensive. Plus, The B&B Inn is small, and you get a great breakfast, and it's so close to everything! We didn't stay at B&B's everywhere on our trip, but we thought it suited Savannah, to stay in an old-fashioned little place, rather than a big hotel. Ooh, and also, you can choose which room you stay in - we chose the Parkview room, which was lovely!

Jen66... Lucky you! You get to go to Savannah once or twice a year!! We didn't find Huey's when we were there - sounds like we missed out! Have a fabulous time at Disney and Savannah in July!! I'm so jealous!!

Tinkerbell1013... Wow, thanks for reading the whole report in one go!! I'm sure you'll see all the places and countries you want to, one day soon!! Have a great time at Pop! Hope you like the cheese popcorn!! :woohoo:

CriminyCrafft... Ha! I always thought Americans must think every other countries' serving sizes are small! We both definitely loved our time in America, and you're right - most people were really, really nice! There were literally only a few people who were grumpy - but hey, doesn't that happen everywhere!? Hope you make it to Australia one day!! Thanks for reading! :thumbsup2

Thanks again to everybody for following along, and for all your nice replies! I'll have the next chapter up tomorrow! :surfweb:

Loved the latest installment. My aunt and uncle used to be stationed somewhere near Savannah when I was little and my parents sent my two sisters and I there for two weeks in the summer for a couple of years. Of course, I don't really remember anything about it except going to the beach, going to a civil war fort, and the time my cousin opened the car door while we were driving down this dirt road and fell out. Luckily he didn't get ran over, but he held onto the door handle and dragged his poor knees until my aunt was able to stop the car. This was all in the days before child safety locks and the like.

My mom and I joke about Paula Deen as the "Butter Lady." I think she even puts butter in her salads. But my mom made her chicken tenders once when I was visiting and they were incredibly good, so I bet the restaurant is deicious.

My son and I have become quite adept at train travel because we've taken it back and forth from San Antonio to New Orleans a few times this last year. Its a nice way to travel with the baby because we don't have to stop two or three hours and he doesn't have to be strapped into his carseat. It takes FOREVER though. it's like a 11 hours if the train is running on time, but usually we have to stop and weight for a freigh train to pass at several locations, so it usually ends up taking 13. It is very roomy though, and we always meet interesting people. And they're not too strict about me bringing everything and the kitchen sink, as long as I say its for the baby (which it usually is). I wish America would get on the high speed train concept. I think it would be a very popular way for both Americans and foreign visitors to travel. But why do anything that would lessen our dependence on foreign oil. Thanks for the heads up on the good cafe food. On my first trip I bought chips and a drink for like $5, so I've packed food ever since.

Sorry about the huge response! Keep those installments rolling in!

I just came across this report and am loving it. cannot wait to finish the rest of it.

Savannah looks so great; nice and peaceful. I never thought about going before but now you have really given me another place to consider on my places to go and see list!

/
I'm going to Spoodles in July and now I cannot wait.

They are re-releasing Dirty dancing on may 1st and 2nd for 1 showing each night.
Not sure if it all over or just in NYC, I just checked tickets and the show is sold out.
I would have loved to have seen it again on the big screen.

I'm interested in seeing how u liked New York City, being I live there and love it.

ok, i'm finally caught up with all the recent updates. so here we go....

i LOVE Fantasmic (yep...going back a while, sorry) i swear i could sit there and watch it all day long, oh wait i have that option ( we taped it ;) )

i hate packing when leaving Disney, it's so depressing, and then to actually leave, argh, it's just not fair.

Savannah sounds beautiful! however, probably not someplace i'll be visiting anytime soon, so not a fan of creepy ghost stories and such, i'm a whimp!

ohh yay! Washington DC!! i've only been there once so far, but i'm planning on going again! can't wait to hear your opinions of it!!

RayDawnPaulaDeen.jpg
So cool you got to meet Paula Deen! She seems so nice. I would love to eat at her restaurant!

Aussie - I finally got a chance to readyour last installment. Your trip sounds like so much fun, especially riding the train. I would love to do that with someone fun!

I live about an hour away from Washington DC, and used to work there. So I'm really looking forward to hearing about that leg of your trip!

Cya!

Just wandered my way into this fantastic trip report. what an amazing adventure you took. us americans think 3 days is a vacation if only i could adventure the world like that!!! sorry you did not like las vegas i just returned froma 4 day trip there with my best friend we had a good time shopping and dining at great spots and staying at MGM i guess it is not for everyone!
San Diego is fantastic i have family out there and hope to get back. i am getting disney sick now wanting to go back and it has not even been a year since my last trip!!! can not wait to hear more of your around the world in 7 weeks!!!!;)

Another great installment! That is so cool you got to eat at Lady & Sons. I like watching Paula on TV and watch her make all her food with butter, butter and more butter :rotfl2: But seriously it looks beautiful there and can't wait to hear about the rest of your trip.

Oh yeah...I think they made Buffalo look much better in Bruce Almighty :rotfl:

Your report is so good. I read a lot of travel books so that I can pretend that I am going to lots of exciting destinations. Your report is like a travel book that I just don't want to end!
I loved the info on Savannah and will put it on my list of places that I would like to see someday.

Woohoo, more replies!! :cool1:

southernbohemian... Wow, what a story about your cousin falling out of the car door!! Yowza! You wouldn't be forgetting that in a hurry! :scared1: I didn't notice that Paula Deen is the butter lady... We really didn't know her at all before we went to her restaurant - we don't get her tv show here in Australia! But her food was yummy! And I agree with you about train travel - even though it takes MUCH longer, it's so much more relaxing than flying. I think a 6 hour train trip would be my limit though. Anything more than that, and I'd be wishing I was on a plane!! Thanks for your post - I love long replies!

scottny... Glad you're enjoying the report!! Have fun at Spoodles! And yay, I didn't know they were re-releasing Dirty Dancing on the big screen! I haven't heard anything about it over here... I'll keep an eye out. :thumbsup2

Disney_Dreaming... You're right - Savannah is beautiful! :thumbsup2 Thanks for your post!

missmun52... Yay! I'm glad I've convinced so many people to want to check out Savannah, without even meaning to! Hehee! :woohoo:

crzyred... Oooh, Savannah isn't only about ghost stories and scary stuff! Really, it's just a beautiful old city!! I hope I didn't scare you off!! :)

Glendamax... Glad you liked the last installment! I'll have the Washington chapter up in just a few minutes! :thumbsup2

soxnation... Hey! Thanks for joining my trip report! Nice to hear that somebody likes Vegas!! Hehee! And San Diego was lots of fun, you're right! Hope you get over your Disney sickness soon... plan another trip, that always helps!!

schmoopypoo... Hehee, they made Buffalo look nicer in Bruce Almighty? You mean, Buffalo doesn't really own the record for the world's biggest cookie? :sad2: Hehehee. Thanks for your nice comments!

Sue88... Hehee, your reply made me giggle!! My report is like a travel book, wow!! I wish! :goodvibes Hope you make it to Savannah one day soon!!

Thanks again everybody for all your lovely replies!! It's so nice to have people still reading along! I'll have the next chapter up in just a couple of minutes!! :yay:

Chapter 16… Welcome to Washington DC!

After three lovely, relaxing nights in Savannah, it was time to head to Washington DC! We were sad to leave Savannah and our cute little Bed and Breakfast, but we were looking forward to visiting Washington, our nation’s capital! Well, America’s capital anyway. Heee. :goodvibes

Lately I’ve noticed that when overseas people visit America, lots of people don’t go to Washington. I must admit, I wasn’t overly enthused about visiting it originally, but DF definitely wanted to go there for a few nights, so we decided to check it out and see some sights for 3 nights. Cause surely if you’re touring America for 6 weeks, you have to pop in to the capital!?

(Just a little bit of background info… While we were traveling around the US, our home in Australia was Canberra, the capital city. Since then, we’ve moved back to Melbourne, where we’re originally from. We lived in Canberra for 18 months for DF’s work, and let’s just say… I’m happy to be back in Melbourne! Canberra is all very political and clean and, well, just not the most exciting place on earth. Sorry QuirkyButterfly! :o So we were a little bit worried that Washington would be like Canberra. Heh!)

So our flight from Savannah to Washington was uneventful! Actually, I can’t remember anything about it, so I suppose it was fine! Which is the best way for a flight to be. And so… we arrived in Washington! Yayyy!

Unfortunately, George W Bush wasn’t there to meet us when we stepped off the plane. Boooo. So instead, we caught a shuttle to our hotel. We shared a shuttle with about 6 other people. One of those people was a dude from Los Angeles, who had flown to Washington DC to join with a large group of people who were there to impeach George Bush. Yowza!! Obviously, it never happened, but wow, did this guy like to talk. We were amazed that he was so passionately against Bush, when he had no idea what our political views were, or where we even came from! Not that we were offended in the least, but you know… we could have been! He was quite a sensible man really, but he just raved on and on and on about their plan to get Bush out of the White House, and all the other people in the shuttle joined in with him too. DF and I sat there smiling and nodding – being Australian, I think we felt like we shouldn’t really have an opinion! It was an entertaining shuttle ride though, I must say. Welcome to Washington!!

This might be a good time to quickly say that throughout our whole time in America, we didn’t meet anybody who actually liked George Bush. Whenever he was mentioned, it was always negatively. By the end of it, we were whispering to each other, “Who voted for him then!?” because seriously. :confused3 I mean, people here pick on our Prime Minister, but nowhere near the degree that George Bush is picked on! I started to feel sorry for him a little bit by the end! But then, I feel sorry for Tom Cruise too. I’m a sucker for the underdog. Heeee.

Anyway, enough talk about George Bush! After all, he didn’t pick us up from the airport. Our hotel was in Georgetown, which is about 5 minutes out of the centre of Washington, with lots of great restaurants and bars… we loved it! If you’re an X-Files fan like me, Scully lived in Georgetown. Hehee. And I assure you, that’s not the reason we chose our hotel. Well, not the whole reason, anyway. :rolleyes1

And look! Our hotel room was awesome! We had a lounge room and a kitchen and a bedroom! We could actually spread out and relax for 3 nights! Weeee! Here’s DF enjoying the couch…

IMG_0728.jpg

That first night, with all the great choices of gourmet restaurants in Georgetown, we decided to go to Johnny Rockets and eat hot dogs. Hehee. That place is pretty bad, I must say. But I liked the strawberry milkshakes. Then, instead of going out to a nice bar for some drinks, we went back to our hotel room and watched Beaches on TV. Yep, Beaches. Can you tell I love girly 80’s movies?!

After a good sleep that night, the next day we decided to hit the museums. We didn’t literally hit them, don’t worry. But first, we called into a great restaurant at Union Station called America. It was recommended to me by someone on these DIS boards, actually! Any food dish you could ever imagine is on the menu. It’s amazing!! And very yummy, too!!

So after our yummy brunch, we jumped on a bus which took us straight to the huge strip of museums. First up was the Air & Space Museum. You guessed it – that was DF’s choice. But you know I couldn’t deny him that, since Kennedy Space Center was such a bust! So here he is, alongside an astronaut suit at the Air & Space Museum…

IMG_0680.jpg

Next up was the National History Museum, but guess what! It was closed! Oh no! I really wanted to go and see Dorothy’s red glittery shoes from The Wizard of Oz! :sad2: I asked the security guard, “Oh, will it be open tomorrow?” to which he replied, “Errr, no. It’s closed for two years for renovation.” Hehee, okay. Guess we were out of luck then!

So we headed to the Holocaust Memorial Museum, which was excellent but very intense. You start up on the top level, and work your way down. So if you’d have enough of the very graphic artifacts and exhibits on the second top level, you have to still keep walking down until you get to the bottom, whether you like it or not. I guess there’s exits to escape if you need to, but we looked it at all of it, and felt pretty mentally exhausted and sad (for lack of a better word) by the end of it. Still, we were glad we saw it all and paid our respects. Interesting, but awful, of course.

I’m sure we went to another museum that day, but for the life of me, I can’t remember what it was. Hmm. It might come to me later!

That night we had dinner at a fantastic little Malaysian restaurant in Georgetown. Yum! We also did a bit of late-night shopping, then headed back to our hotel for the night. It was a big day!

So the next day, we got up early and bought tickets for the sight-seeing hop on / hop off bus which takes you to all the touristy sights of Washington. I just love those buses! They’re so cheesy and touristy. Hehee. We saw LOTS of stuff that day!!

Here’s me with the Washington monument…

IMG_0696.jpg

Here it is again, from up the top of the Lincoln Memorial. I must admit, I stood on those steps and said to DF excitely, “HEY! This is where Forrest Gump stood when he made his speech about Vietnam, then ran into the water to hug Jenny!” DF replied, “Uh, yes. It’s also where Martin Luther King delivered his ‘I have a dream…’ speech.”, which I guess is slightly more important that the scene from Forrest Gump. Whoops.

IMG_0709.jpg

Here’s me again, posing with the American flag. I’m so patriotic towards other countries!!

IMG_0719.jpg

And here’s DF sitting inside the Jefferson Memorial… You can tell how tall the building is, by how little DF is!!

IMG_0694.jpg

We also visited the Vietnam Memorial, the Korean War Memorial, the World War II Memorial and the Franklin Roosevelt Memorial. Sheesh! We were Memorial-ed out! Actually, we weren’t. We both found it all pretty interesting. DF studied American history at university, so he taught me lots of stuff as we went around all the different places.

Oh, and we also called in to this place…

IMG_0724.jpg

The White House!! Yayyyy! We didn’t really call in, of course. I’m amazed at how well that photo turned out, because it actually came from me being really brave and sticking my arm through a 10 metre high electric fence, and taking the photo really, really quickly. I didn’t really fancy being shot down that day, so I was quick. I felt so naughty, that afterwards we had to leave straight away, in case one of the zillion security guards confiscated my camera. Heee. :tiptoe:

Guess who we walked past as we were walking around that area!? The guy from the shuttle bus who was planning to impeach Bush, and his huge group of protesters! They’d set up camp near the Capitol Building, and seemed to be having a lovely day in the sunshine, chatting and asking people to sign their petition. Hehee. We walked the other way so we didn’t get caught by him again. :rolleyes1

In our never-ending day, we also went to the Arlington Cemetery, and visited JFK’s tomb and flame. Wow, what a day!

By this stage, we were exhausted. Exhausted, but we definitely enjoyed the bus tour. I just love that you can hop off wherever you fancy, and then jump on another bus half an hour later, to take you to the next place! After our big day, we went back to our hotel for a quick nap and a relax. Guess what else we discovered… We were sunburnt!! It was a lovely sunny day, but we didn’t think it was hot enough to get burnt! Ouch! Silly us!

Now, before we left Australia, we’d bought tickets online for a night bus tour to take us around to see Washington “after dark”! So that was that night! We basically went to all the same monuments that we went to during the day, but it was lovely to see them at night. It was a totally different atmosphere to see them all lit up.

Here’s the Lincoln Memorial by night…

IMG_0737.jpg

And here’s us, inside the Lincoln Memorial! I think we were a bit delirious by this stage, suffering from bad sunburn and sleepiness! We had the giggles!

IMG_0754.jpg

We also got to see the Iwo Jima Marine Memorial in the dark, which was nice…

IMG_0775.jpg

After a great night touring Washington, we didn’t get home to our hotel until around 11pm, and realised we hadn’t eaten dinner. So we ordered our very first delivered American pizza! Yum! I think it was pretty similar to Australian pizza though, if I recall correctly!

And then… we went to bed! Finally!!

That, my friends, was our time in Washington! Because the next day, we were set to fly to New York! Yayyyy! We saw a LOT in Washington, and took lots of touristy photos, and did all the touristy things, and it was nice! I’m glad we went, but I did get Canberra-vibes from Washington. It seems so serious and political and sensible, and that’s not really me! :confused3 DF, on the other hand, loved Washington, and said he could imagine himself living there! Wow! I really liked Georgetown, with it’s cute shops and great restaurants and lively atmosphere – it seemed like a little city within a city – it was so different to the rest of Washington.

Also because it’s the capital city I guess, we saw lots of homeless people and protesters, and also lots of strange, loud people who we didn’t encounter anywhere else. Like out the front of Union Station, which is a beautiful old building, we watched two angry people start yelling at each other, who were then immediately dragged away by police. Oh! People just seemed to be a bit more tense and angry in Washington. Maybe they go there exactly for that reason, but I think it gives the whole place a nervous energy. Does that make sense!? It’s hard to describe… but it was certainly unlike any other place we visited in America. Political tension, I guess.

All that being said, I don’t want it to sound like we didn’t enjoy Washington. Because we did! It just had a different vibe to everywhere else we went! We had a wonderful couple of days exploring the beautiful city, and I’d definitely recommend anybody who hasn’t been to go and explore! And definitely stay in Georgetown, for a more relaxed, fun vibe after a big day of touring the sights!! :yay:

Next up… Start spreading the news, I’m leaving today. I wanna be a part of it, New York, New Yooooork! (Come on guys, sing along with me!!)

Whoo hoo! I'm the first to read the next chapter today! It's the little thrills in life, ya' know? LOL

Ok, I'll go out on a limb and say that I do like George Bush, but I do not agree with all of the decisions he makes. I'm a sucker for the underdog, too, but I draw the line at Tom Cruise.

Looking forward to reading more!

I am enjoying your TR so much. I love Washington DC, it's been years since I have visited.
