Twelve Months of Training and Travel

It was a bit hard to swallow, for sure! I could kinda get behind the cost for 3 but then when I added in the shipping.. :faint: Still... in the end I did purchase and justify it by telling myself I now have a shirt for each race. Merida for avengers (she can be a super hero, yes?) Rapunzel for the Donald. Belle for the Princess. I will have to get new skirts for Merida and Rapunzel but really my "costume" cost for the year is almost taken care of.
I thought the price was okay (certainly better than normal prices) but I didn't want to take the risk of getting shirts I didn't want. :confused3 Hooray for getting your costumes most of the way done!!
So awesome! I just hope to get the flight down there for that!
That would be great!! Good luck!
:rotfl2: I know... I have been toying with the idea. Steve and I had a long talk about it last night and decided - for sure- against it. Maybe next year. He wants to see if he can get through a half and not need to recover the next day first. Does this mean that I couldn't do it by myself? No... but the other consideration is funds. I have registered for so many races lately it really is starting to show in my bank account. Probably best to just go with the donald. Then maybe I will have enough recovery in my account by the time July and the registration for the phm rolls around to consider adding a challenge in that weekend. :goodvibes but man... those medals do tempt us, don't they??!!!
Those are very good reasons for putting it off. ::yes:: You know it'll always be there.

My friend did the Glass Slipper Challenge this year and really liked it! I think she liked the 10K the best - the course and character turnout were really good and the finisher medal was adorable. I'm sure you'd have a blast doing that challenge. :goodvibes

I am not one who likes to take risks either...so this was a tad outside my comfort zone. I am happy with the ones I got...but I could have got two of the ones I already own.

That would be great!! Good luck!

I might be dreaming... but I can always hope for it. :goodvibes

They are. And the glass slipper might be more manageable. I will be honest...not sure what exactly it entails. I just know it doesn't include a full marathon. :thumbsup2 I could do a 5k, 10k and then half though. Problem will be the days. I have a full day to travel there and a full day back... and can only spare 5 nights total between points and work schedule. Could make it too difficult. So ultimately I may choose not to do the challenge for phm weekend too.

Congratulations on your run, Ann! :thumbsup2

I missed the whole update with the shirts. :scared1: How I did that, I don't know, but I need to tell you the shirts look awesome.

And your future DIL is a doll. Good catch your son's made here. ;) :lmao:

Thanks, Karin! I am glad to have got through it. It was so fun to run with someone!!!

I love the shirts and am super excited to wear them. :goodvibes

And yes.. Kimberly is quite the catch for Zach. He loves to tell people he is marrying the captain of a college cheer team. :rotfl: I think more than anything she is a catch just to put up with my ds!

This week was a hard one. I got sick and while it wasn't as bad as the plague I would definitely call it a nuisance. I figured it wouldn't be too bad of timing given that on 4/13 I had a 12k to run.

Total Miles for the week 10.8 with an average pace of 9:08

Monday 4/7 - I went out and did my typical 2 mile run. Only I wasn't quite doing speed work. Still kept under 9 minute mile pace...but it was a struggle.

Wednesday 4/9 - I shifted my days and decided to take this a tad easy. Just a 4 mile run without pushing too hard. It didn't feel bad for the 4 miles. I managed to average a 9:07 pace. The closer to that 4 I got though, the more I thought I couldn't keep the pace.

Friday 4/11 - Again having shifted my days, I chose to run friday instead of thursday. I actually considered skipping it given my lungs were irritated. However I thought it would be better to get in the miles and sacrifice pace. Plus I thought I would reward myself by arranging my route to end with a large orange refresher drink from Starbucks. So I ran and kept my pace a bit down. I ended up going almost 4 1/2 miles in order to get to Starbucks. By the time I got there I had quite the side ache. 9:18 pace. I got my drink and was happy to walk the half mile home. (I don't count the half mile home in my totals) I thought that if I had to do another 3 miles that day I might have been in trouble. Walking was fine but my stamina was really lacking so another 3 was definitely out that day.

Why was I thinking about another 3? Well, the next run I would have would be the 12k with Cynthia! :woohoo: I will do a race recap for that in a separate post and since it was technically in this week the miles or pace for that are not factored in the above tally.

You did WAY better than I did for the week. I ran a whopping 3.29 for the ENTIRE week. And it was ugly, with walking and feeling overheated. I wasn't ready for a 73 degree run! I'd been so looking forward to it that entire day and then...it just sucked rocks. :rotfl: And that was it. I had 2 gym workouts but for running, that was it. This week is shaping up to be potentially almost as bad. :headache: I haven't done anything since our 12K and recent developments have seemed to ensure nothing is happening tonight either.

UGH on the side ache.

Well, my pace probably suffered on sunday because of how many miles I did get in. 10 should not have been an issue for me...but I wonder if it wasn't.

I have yet to get much in this week either. I did go out on monday, as I mentioned to you. I had to see if I was just being a baby or not. Not being a baby... I took yesterday off thinking maybe today. I might tomorrow. that is my goal.

Before I get into that I thought I would share some drama regarding my November trip.

Before booking our return flight and adding the two extra nights, I made sure to fully discuss it with Zach and Kimberly. The only push back I got was that Kimberly insisted that at 3pm 6 weeks before the flight it would be the cheapest and we should wait. ::yes:: dear girl follows pintrest. I know they "say" that is the best time.. One I can't ever wait that long and two it doesn't get much cheaper than $69. So when I was firm on disagreeing, she and thus Zach agreed that we should get the return flight.

So Sunday I got a text asking what flight had we booked. Down or back? Well, I knew this meant something. Luckily they were hoping it was the return flight because Kimberly (who is cheer captain at her college) found that there would be a game on 11/15. :faint:

So this complicates things. Steve and I are planning to arrive at night on 11/14. (unless we get an early flight out on 11/15 that gets us there in time to go to the expo) I don't have to have us all on the same flight. So that is not my concern. My concern for Steve and I is that we have to be up early on 11/16 for the race and should they not get in until after midnight on that day it might be a pain. Doable, yes.. but still a pain. However really more the pain is what it does for Zach and Kimberly. They told me how they want a 7pm flight... well, that is great and all IF there is one (currently the latest on on alaska is 5pm) However there is still the issue of going right from her game to the airport. I can not see this going as easy as she thinks it will. I know they can skip the security because of DOD stuff.. but I know they still will need to get to the airport an hour before their flight. (cause boarding happens ahead of when the flight is scheduled for - duh) Oh to be 20 somethings...

I know I was a bit short with Zach when I told him that maybe they should just fly in on Sunday. I didn't mean to be. I just was tired from the race and really I can't see her having an evening game on Saturday making it easy for them to get to CA before Sunday. What I said set him off a bit and he suggested they just get their own room. :sad2:

After I assured him that is not what I meant... we are still sharing a room. I just don't know WHEN they will arrive. Steve now feels like there is a good chance they will not be coming. I really hope that this is not the case!

Seahawks 12k

As I mentioned in my weekly training recap, last week I got a cold or bad allergies or SOMETHING. Not the plague by any means, but definitely a nuisance and definitely impacting my performance. I never take naps and last week (luckily I had days off) I took two (as well as one yesterday) I knew I was going to not be 100% for Sunday.

I was nervous about traffic and parking. I was headed up (about a 45 minute drive) by myself and I worried about navigating through bad traffic. I was ready and out the door by 7:15am.

I hit the exit off the freeway at about 8am. Not too far ahead of when Cynthia did. She was coming south though while I was headed north. Maybe this is what made all the difference, but I was parked by 8:15 while she took about another 30 minutes to get parked. I waited in the parking lot a while for her thinking at any time they would be showing up. Finally I decided I would be cutting it too close if I didn't find a restroom before they arrived.

So I left the parking lot and got in a VERY long line at Target. It moved quickly enough though and I was out soon enough.

I made my way to the staging area and soon I was getting texts from Cynthia that they had arrived and she had hit the porta potties. Meanwhile, vendors were walking around handing out samples. I somehow got offered a full pack of cliff blocks and ended up taking it. I had no where to put this...so I ended up running the entire race with the package in my hands. Why I didn't just toss it I do not know. :rotfl:

With minutes to spare before the first wave of runners were released, she and I found each other. :woohoo: We managed to wiggle into the second wave. (:cool1: Cynthia and I are both great at wiggling into a spot)

With confetti shot into the air it was time for our wave to be released. We started running and found serious congestion on the course. Normally I really get frustrated by this. It was causing us to go much slower than either of us would have liked... but for me I was trying to not push too hard since I wasn't feeling great... so on this day I while it was a tad frustrating it was less so than it normally would have been.

What was frustrating though was the fact that as Cynthia and I dodged through the crowd we always seemed to end up on "drunk bumps" You know, the raised bumps in the center of the road to indicate the lane? I was sure I was going to trip on one.

Mile two opened up and Cynthia and I really got a much better pace going. I definitely didn't not feel at all like I was holding back and I felt like I was keeping up withe her just fine. (was she holding back for me? I didn't think so.. ) So we seemed very nicely match.

And then the hills came. :faint:

I don't train on hills. I don't train in heat. I need to do both. So add in that I was under the weather and I quickly realized that I was going to have to drop back.

I know I made it to mile 3 with Cynthia. I remember thinking it was just about.. maybe not quite the half way point when we saw her husband fly by us from behind. Somehow he had started in a wave behind us and being the quick runner he is not only caught up... but flew by. At that point when she laughed and pointed him out, I could see that we were in different places with our stamina. I was starting to breath funny.... which ultimately led to a side ached. Since she was able to chuckle still... I waved her on and told her I needed to drop back.

As much as I would have liked to finish with her, it was the right call. I ended up taking some walk breaks (up some of the remaining hills as well as through water stops)

All week I had seen that 4 miles was doable for me but that I didn't have anything left for more after that. So in those miles after 4, I saw a HUGE drop in my pace. I just had no stamina. I did however find that once the hills were over and in approximately the last half mile or so I was able to pick it back up and finish strong.

I finished a little less than 3 minutes after Cynthia (so it wasn't like I totally bombed )

1:11:54 with a pace of 9:24. I was 1331 out of 4047 overall. 80th out of 382 in my division and 568 out of 2555 females. Not too bad... but I am sure I could have done better.

Now for those who read Cynthia's report, you may know that we had question as the the distance and our pace. Reported paces do NOT match the distance of a 12k. In fact... no one I came across had their gps show a 12k either (about 7 and 1/2 miles). It bugged me.. it bugged Cynthia. Luckily, Cynthia looked up the USTAF certification stats on the race. 12.31K!! I know that extra 2 tenths of a mile shouldn't matter, but it really would have made my pace look even worse that it did!

After the race, we hung out and chatted and we got a picture of three of us from a facebook group that Cynthia and I belong to. Sadly... no picture of Cynthia's husband who did AWESOME btw. He finished in under an hour!!!

The race really took it out of me but it was so much fun!!! What a beautiful day and what fun to run with Cynthia! I think come August I have hope that I can run at least part with her.. but know now that we will have no problems splitting up too. :goodvibes

Well, my pace probably suffered on sunday because of how many miles I did get in. 10 should not have been an issue for me...but I wonder if it wasn't.

I wonder if you should really get the lungs checked out. This has been off and on it seems since the plague took you out in Jan. I'm sure it could be allergies but? Although maybe if you stick with using the inhaler (you started it, yes?) that will make a difference.

I have yet to get much in this week either. I did go out on monday, as I mentioned to you. I had to see if I was just being a baby or not. Not being a baby... I took yesterday off thinking maybe today. I might tomorrow. that is my goal.

Not being a baby, getting healthy! It's a tough call sometimes to know when to sit it out and when working through it actually helps.

I probably could have fit something in on Monday or Tuesday but with Jeff nursing his hip...opted out. I will do gym tonight and plan to run tomorrow, and then gym if it all plays out right. Last night would have normally been a run night but Jeff did gym due to the hip and me...well I was loading a giant truck!

Before I get into that I thought I would share some drama regarding my November trip.

Before booking our return flight and adding the two extra nights, I made sure to fully discuss it with Zach and Kimberly. Oh my word! First I can't believe there aren't any flights to any of the airports after 5. That seems crazy wrong.

Second, even if Zach has DOD security priority, Kimberly wouldn't, would she? And he has to be in uniform to get it doesn't he? Even with that...these days they are requiring you to be at the gate 30 minutes prior, boarding starting then and closing the gate 10-15 minutes before departure. I would not be remotely comfortable with the window they are talking about. They've really cracked down at the gate and SeaTac's TSA can be really really backed up.

Me too! I thought I'd do a face plant. It seemed like going left was the only way to get around folks, there just wasn't much room on the right or middle.

Mile two opened up and Cynthia and I really got a much better pace going. I definitely didn't not feel at all like I was holding back and I felt like I was keeping up withe her just fine. (was she holding back for me? I didn't think so.. ) So we seemed very nicely match.

Not bad at all! And with hills, a warmer day and a lingering lung whatever. I think you did just fine! Top 25% of females and in your division and top third overall :goodvibes My number seems to be holding at 1000. Which is a bummer, 999 was so much more cool!

Wow, you had a lot more in your division, I guess that's the benefit of being older, only 265 to compete with.

Now for those who read Cynthia's report, you may know that we had question as the the distance and our pace. Reported paces do NOT match the distance of a 12k. After the race, we hung out and chatted and we got a picture of three of us from a facebook group that Cynthia and I belong to. Sadly... no picture of Cynthia's husband who did AWESOME btw. He finished in under an hour!!!

He was VERY focused on wanting coffee. Except we didn't have any money. And blames that for not thinking of it himself.

And me of course

He never did have more coffee!

The race really took it out of me but it was so much fun!!! What a beautiful day and what fun to run with Cynthia! I think come August I have hope that I can run at least part with her.. but know now that we will have no problems splitting up too. :goodvibes

It was a ton of fun and we will definitely be able to have some running together! Keep taking it easy and get ALL the way better.

Did you make it out for a run Friday night?

Oh my word! First I can't believe there aren't any flights to any of the airports after 5. That seems crazy wrong.

I think there maybe be into a different airport or on a different carrier. Like we talked about though... I think it is going to be a better idea for Zach to come down with us and for Kimberly to follow.

Second, even if Zach has DOD security priority, Kimberly wouldn't, would she? And he has to be in uniform to get it doesn't he? I don't think he has to be in uniform. He and Kimberly used their priority when they went to DLR last time....

I agree 999 is cooler... but all in all I think both of us came in with a good finish placement. :thumbsup2

I did make it out! Had a lovely 4.68 miles :) super sad this morning though. Decided to test one of the possible tanks for the half at the gym. It did not breathe! In fact it still hasn't dried and I got off the elliptical a solid 25 minutes ago. And you can see it (tmi I know but ick).

Bummed. It's going back.

At least you know now that it doesn't breathe!

:cool1: You got out and ran! I am really wanting to run... but today was so hectic and then super rainy. I spent so much of the day thursday soaked... I think I am still recovering from that.

That is a bummer about the tank... but at least you know and you know it can go back. :thumbsup2

Thursday was nasty!!! I'd still be recovering too. It wa a great little run although I may have preferred this mornings by the beach a little more :) and...tank #2 seems like it will work, tested it out.

Ahhh, HILLS! What's really funny is that the hilliest course I ran (5K), I PR'd?? I guess I run down them faster and it makes up for the slower up hill? Anyway, great recap and it sounds like you did pretty well. I really really get annoyed when races are not measured correctly and it happens ALL.THE.TIME. out where I live. In fact, I think they believe out here that 3.01 is the actual distance of a 5K because that's almost always what my garmin says. I should be happy that it looks like I'm speedier since they cut out almost 1/10 of a mile...but I'm not, it just makes me feel like my time isn't accurate. :confused3

Great picture from the race! Love that you were both able to meet up so easily and wiggle you way through the crowd at the beginning of the race. Ugh to hills!

I think you both did great. You should be so proud!

Sorry about the flight drama. NO, it really doesn't get cheaper than $69. That's an unbelievable fare. :thumbsup2 Hope everyone secures their flights and there's no more drama.

Ahhh, HILLS! What's really funny is that the hilliest course I ran (5K), I PR'd?? I guess I run down them faster and it makes up for the slower up hill?

I think that is the way it should work. I think it was probably my only saving grace with the race.

Thanks.. I did ok. Not my best... not my worst. It was fun so that is what matters, right?

Well, it was technically measured correctly. Per the USATF site, the race was certified as a 12.31K. That distance is also what is reflected in official pace results. It was just frustrating because it was advertised and listed as a 12k... I mean... the name of the race is the Seahawks 12k. So if you were to just look at finish time and the distance of 12k... the pace jumps way up. That is why Cynthia and I were so confused/frustrated because what we thought our pace was and what it would be if we finished with our times was different. Also...nothing like thinking you are only running 7.45 miles and then realizing you have to run another 2 tenths more.

Thanks! I think the picture turned out nicely. We were lucky that we found each other (thank you technology.. What did we ever do without cell phones?) It could very well have easily been that we missed each other. Ug to the hills is right!

I am sure it will work out. Kimberly has looked into flights and she thinks she can find one that arrives early enough. Steve actually likes the idea of having a single night all to ourselves. As long as they get there and I don't have to worry about staying up too late the night before the race I will be happy.

Last week was kinda a bummer week for me.

Total Miles 14.8 with an average pace of 9:13.

Sunday - 4/13

Race day... all ready shared how that went. Boy did that leave me tapped though. I spent the night coughing. I wasn't sure though... was I sick? Being a baby over allergies?

Monday - 4/14

I decided that I would test myself. Was I being just a big baby? Went and ran my short run. I pushed to get my pace under the 9 minute mile mark. I tried to get it under the 8 1/2 minute mile mark but couldn't. I got home and realized that I wasn't being as big of a baby as I thought and decided that using two different inhalers for while was going to be a good idea.

Tuesday - 4/15

I gave myself a break. I figured after sunday and monday I really should allow myself some time to recover and for the inhalers to work some magic.

Wednesday - 4/16

I told myself that if I was feeling better I would go out this day. Not feeling a whole lot better I skipped it.

Thursday - 4/17

So I was feeling a bit better. Maybe not enough to really go hard, but I had to get some miles in. At this rate, I am never going to meet my 1000 mile goal for the year. Curious to know how far behind I am? Well, we are almost a third of the way through the year so I would like to be close to 30%.. Sadly I am only at 23% So I managed 5 miles. It was pouring rain though so I came home completely soaked!

Then it was Adventure Run night :woohoo: This month's theme - Easter. For those who do not know... this is a fun FREE event put on by my favorite running store. You come wearing your shirt... you run/walk to check points and get raffle tickets for making it to them. Sometimes they ask you to do something like lunges for extra tickets. Also you get extra tickets for wearing your shirt.

Kira and Josh met Zoe, Alex and I there. We got checked in and went to the vendor booths. We got lots of free samples of muscle milk, VitaCoconut (who knew this was so yummy! Mango Peach is amazing!) Some protein shake that I thought was kinda meh... kira liked though. They also had first aid shots. Good to take and tuck away for later (it has aspirin and caffeine in it) There was a promoter for a race that Cynthia had told me about there and we talked. They also gave away a lot of pre race freebies. (I think they knew that not many would be sticking out the rain) Kira gave up a case of rock star energy drink because she doesn't like it. Silly girl... her db would have taken it. With as many people as we have in our family - there is ALWAYS someone who can use whatever is won.

I noticed someone wearing a pair of the Disney New Balance shoes. She is at all of these runs too... I started a conversation with her to ask what race she went to in order to get them. I got the impression she goes to pretty much all the races. At least that is what I gathered from her rattling off all the different ones she has purchased.. the red minnie the goofy..cinderella.. pink minnie. :scrachin is there any more that she could have purchased? :rotfl: I think she may have thought I had not yet ran a disney race. So I told her that I just registered for the WDW half. She noted that she had registered for the dopey. I kinda made a whoa noise and said that I just could never do that much. She told me that I could always do just the goofy. I again made the whew noise and explained that is a lot of training... that maybe I take it all a bit too far with, but to train for the goofy would be too much for me given that I would take it as seriously as I do and I would train to run the entire thing. She then basically told me that I need to not do Disney races like that. I think she may have even tossed out the "Disney races are just for fun" comment. Honestly, it kinda made me feel like my goals or what I find to be fun was a bit invalid. Oh well....

It was a VERY rainy evening. We were SOAKED by the end of it. We did more running than I had thought I would do given that we tried to get from point to point to avoid the torrential rains. At one point though, poor little Zoe slipped and fell hard. She is a trooper though and it didn't take too much and she was up and running to the next check point. That is where she and I caught up to the rest of the crew doing lunges. Zoe and I skipped those. Alex and Kira (who are not active at all) did them though and really had sore legs the next day from them. :rotfl: We got stuck at one point when two trains blocked the road and we couldn't cross. I will admit it was getting very close to the time cut off and I was worried we wouldn't get back in time for the raffle. We did make it back though..with not much time to spare. In the end we did about 2 1/2 miles.

The raffle was awesome and fun just like it usually is. We really have been very lucky at these. This is the third time we won a pair of shoes. This time I won a pair of new balance (up to $160 value), a 3 month subscription to rock my run (gave that to Josh), a new adventure run tshirt (gave that to Josh cause he wanted a second one for some reason), a gift card to a local restaurant and a case of energy gel. I suspect I missed a couple of our tickets being called. I almost missed the shoe one..but at the last second I realized I had to have the ticket since the number was like 25 and I had 24 and 26 (which would mean I had received 25 in the series) I called out in time before they moved on and was able to find the ticket in the pile we had. Normally we have them organized and taped down... this time though I had to try and deal with both Zoe and Alex's tickets since they needed to run to the restroom. I was barely able to get the tickets divided and turned in...so then getting them stuck to tape was just not feasible. Then managing to look at their tickets in addition to mine was just :confused3 All of that considered though, I think we did pretty well! All of the winnings were off of my tickets this time though which is odd... normally Kira and Josh have some that they win. I have some... etc. It was a lot of fun.
Edited to say I forgot that Alex snagged a Dirty Dash Tshirt. Not from a raffle ticket, just a giveaway like the rockstar case would have been had Kira taken it. Kinda of "hey you, you win" sort of thing

I didn't take any of my own pictures... but RR always has official pics on the facebook page. So I will leave you with some that they took... I am sure you can recognize Kira and Zoe.. but what about my midsection or leg? Or Alex's backside? :rotfl:

I recently went in for a visit to see my primary care. Mostly just your usual yearly visit... but few years back I had some negative (as in bad) test results that have required me to be rechecked regularly to make sure all is still well. This visit, the test results came back completely clear so I have been put on an every 3 year check now. :cool1: Also at this visit, my doctor too a look at my feet and told me I had to see a podiatrist because my feet looked "weird" :rotfl2: So in I went last friday to see the podiatrist. (after I got to have coffee with Cynthia :cool1:) Now.. without grossing out all you non runners... suffice it to say that when my primary doc says my feet look weird... it just means I don't have the prettiest feet any more due to the running. However, how much is just to be expected and how much is damage and how much is injury is what was in question.

The podiatrist was great. He basically told me that the only thing that would fix my feet would be to stop running and he looked at me and said... "and I can tell that just like every other runner I tell that too, there is no way you are going to stop running". :rotfl: Nope.. So his next question was just to ask how painful each damaged area was. I can live with it.. so his conclusion was.." well, then we won't do anything". He gave me some pointers as to what I can do to "help" those areas. (who knew that vicks vapor rub is good for running damaged feet?) He said that he doesn't expect me in for another few years. (again.. a few years... like I have some sort of free pass for a few years:rotfl:)

I briefly mentioned that I started using a couple different inhalers in an attempt to get my lung/sinus crud under control. I have been slightly if not fully under the weather since the january trip. So while those have been helping I still think there is more going on...so I also am not going to try taking some allergy medication. I figure it can't hurt, right? I never have been bothered enough by allergies to hassle with meds...but I also have never been trying to train for 4 half marathons.

So that is my medicals stuff.

Easter was great... went to Kira's. Josh's family and Kimberly's family came as well. So fun to have such a large group together. We ate far too much food and even had an egg hunt. Josh and I get a wee bit competitive though... and we noticed an egg stuck to the window outside the house. We both rushed the door and tussled to keep the other in. My knee got all scrapped and bruised. We were laughing so hard! It was so funny... but ultimately he barged past me and I lost out on that egg. :rotfl2: We also took a hike down to the river near their house. Along the way, Josh was of course finding as many snakes as he could. I think that Kimberly's poor mother wasn't sure what to make of all of us. Josh's parents are old dear friends. For those who don't know... Kira and Josh have known each other since they were 10... because his folks and Steve and I have been friends for that long. Kimberly's mom got really serious at one point and quietly (although I over heard) told Zach and Kimberly that their children would be cousins to Kira and Josh's children. I guess all the horse play and snake hunting has her alarmed for her future grandchildren. :lmao:
