TV is broke, what would you do?

We have a 5 year old, 55" Sony LCD projection TV(55E2000) that went out and customer support thinks its a power source issue, around $400 to fix.. Put the money into it or junk it?

if you have the space, you could even get a front projector system for about $800

I would just junk it. You can get a newer model for a little bit more.

Junk it. You never know what it will end up actually being once if that $400 power source is not the whole problem.

Put it on craiglists. Set it as is for parts. Use the money to buy a new tv. Too bad its not the lamp. Only costs about a hundred twenty dollars for a lamp and there easy to replace.

People will still buy that stuff on ebay and craig's list, or try to find a repair store around. Heck they might be even be able to better determine the problem and not cost you 400$ to fix, but they might also be willing to buy it for parts. It's one way to recoup a bit of your cost for a new tv.

Personally, I would replace the TV. The last several years have seen major improvements in TV technology, along with declining prices. If you have another TV you can use for a month, I would wait and see what the Black Friday sales offer.

Yeah, "funny" thing is, we just replaced the lamp about 3 months ago....

I think what we have decided to do is buy a smaller TV and stick it there, maybe a 37", then save up and buy a 55" as money is a little tight now.. then take the 37" and stick that in the bedroom to replace our 15 year old, 800 pound 27" we currently have..

Since it is a projection TV, I would look at replacing it.

Today, it may the power source, but in a few months, the bulb may go out, costing you another $400 (if you're not a do-it-yourselfer like Post #5).

Flat-panel TVs are going to be at an all-time low during the 2010 holiday season -- you could very seriously see a 50+" HDTV for well-under $1000.

You may be able to offset your costs by selling your broke TV "as is" since electronics hobbyists are always looking for spare parts (plus, in many cases, you may be able to get up to $50 for your remote control on eBay, etc.).

Sony had several recalls on their Grand Wega 55" TVs. Check to make sure yours isn't included in a recall before getting rid of it.

I have one and right after the lamp was replaced, it started having all sorts of problems. First, the picture turned yellow / green. Sony fixed this for free. Next it started to shut itself down every 20 minutes and restart. Sony fixed this for free as well. In both cases, the repair shop came to my house - so no lugging a big TV around to be fixed.

Call around to local appliance places. Our power source went out after a year and we called a local place, they came and picked it up, replaced the power source and dropped it back off for less the $100.

Just a little update, got our 46" the other day and its awesome, after a little haggling and them taking the free 40" back because it was so small for our room, they shipped this TV to us for $129. Its still much smaller than the 55", but the quality is much better, really can't complain at all about Sony.

It was an offer where the 40 was free, was a charge for the 46 or 55, so after a little haggling about a bulb I just purchased, bought the 46" that Best Buy is selling for $1399 for $179.

CRAZY you posted this !! We have the same tv I believe . Replaced the bulb two years ago, it just went out this summer and now has gone out again or so we thought. Turns out it was the the lamp driver . Replaced at a decent price from ebay but bought a lamp too because we thought that was the issue, until we did more research. I am calling sony today and look into the recall issue.
